    Mr. John William Prentice, sub-postmaster of Peakirk, was taken ill whilst on his rounds a week ago and rheumatic fever was followed by pneumonia and other complications, and he passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

    Death and Funeral of Mrs. John Prentice

    We much regret to record that Mrs. Rose Prentice, widow of Mr. John William Prentice, on Friday, died (June 25th) after a long illness patiently borne. She had lived in Peakirk over 30 years, and was respected by all, and will be much missed.

    The funeral service on Saturday was conducted by the Rev. Canon J.T. Nance. The body was placed in a polished oak coffin, with the inscription: “Rose Prentice, died June 25th, 1925, aged 66 years.”

    The mourners were: Mr. H. and Miss N. Prentice (son and daughter); Mr. F. and Miss L. Prentice (son and daughter); Mr. H.A. Baldwin (nephew), and Miss D. Prentice (daughter); Mr. And Mrs. C. Mould (brother and sister-in-law); Mr. G. Mould (brother), and Mrs. Blanchard (sister-in-law); Mr. G. Prentice and Mrs. French (brother-in-law and sister-in-law); Mr. G. Prentice (nephew); and Mrs. S. Prentice (sister-in-law); Mr. And Mrs. A. Mould (cousins); Mrs. Frost and Miss E. Mould (cousins); Mr. And Mrs. Lake, Mr. And Mrs. W.T. Welbourn, Mrs. Sisson, Mrs. A.   1. Ellen Prentice, b. 18 Mar 1888, Peakirk, Northants, and d. ther 11 Aug 1946. At home in 1891 and 1901. Before World War I Ellen Prentice went to Germany and taught English to German students. When the war broke out she was repatriated in exchange for Germans in England. In England she taught German in Nottingham until she had a stroke. She had the stroke when she was in her late 40's or early 50's. The stroke left her a partial invalid so she went to Bledington to stay with her brother Harold and his wife. She would occasionally go to Peakirk to stay with Dora for a month or two. It was on one of these trips to Peakirk that she died. (Ref: Telephne interview with Sheila Rose - February 13, 2004)

She was a secretary for a solicitor in Peterborough for a number of years until he died. After he died she became secretary to the Dean of Peterborough Cathedral and was also the Treasurer of the Friends of Peterborough Cathedral which was an organization which raised money for the cathedral. She was very organized and efficient. Dora was very active in the Peakirk Church. She played the organ and was the Church Warden. (Telephone interview of Sheila Rose - February 13, 2004) She d. at Peterborough Memorial hospital at the age of 66 yrs. Funeral service at St. Pega’s Peakirk, Thursday Dec. 23rd at 2pm followed by cremation at Marholm. Her ashes were bur. in St. Pega's Church, Peakirk.

3.3 George Harold Prentice, b. 13 Jun 1890 in Peakirk, Northamptonshire, England and died 5 Apr 1975 in Chipping Norton Memorial Hospital, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England.

He married Lillian Lake on 7 Jul 1919 in Peakirk, Northamptonshire, England, dau. of William Lake. She was b. 1Mar 1893 in Deeping St. James, Lincolnshire, England and died 1 Mar 1984 in Y Gorlan, Cross Inn, Llandyssul, Wales.

George Harold Prentice prior to World War I helped his father farm. During the war, George Harold was in the army ( Royal Horse Artillery). He served in France. After the war he came home and in 1919 when John William died, Harold took over the farm. In 1923 or 1924 George left Peakirk and moved to Cold Ashby, Northants to have more land to farm. England went through the depression and it became very difficult to continue farming. Finally in 1935 or 1936 Harold gave up farming and moved his family to Bledington which is on the border of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

Harold became an Air Ministry Warder which was a policeman job. Harold and Lillian stayed there until they retired and were getting up in years. In about 1970, George and Lillian moved to the farm of their daughter Sheila and Dick Rose (Churchill Heath Farm) and stayed in a cottage on their farm. George died there in 1975. In about 1983, Dick and Sheila gave up farming and moved to Wales to be near a cousin of Sheila's. They took Lillian with them. Lillian died the next year there in Wales and in 1985 Dick had an operation for cancer. Following the operation, Dick felt they should move back to where they came from so they moved back to Oxfordshire. (per Telephone interview of Sheila Rose February 13, 2004).

3.5 John Trevor Prentice, b. 25 Apr 1920, Peakirk, Northamptonshire, England. He emigrated to New Zealand on 26 Nov 1988. He joined the RAF in Jan 1936 and served until Jan 1971.

He m. Molly Mary Mark on 2 Apr 1945 in Bishops, Stortford, Essex. She was born 11 Feb 1917 in Mill Farm, Thorpe Abbotts, Diss, Norfolk. Called Molly.Before the War she became a Red Cross nurse and continued nursing until the latter part of 1945. She was a nurse in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and the Bishop Stortford General Hospital where we met in November 1944. Emigrated to New Zealand on 26 Nov 1988.

She is a foster-child who was "adopted" by William and Martha probably through the Methodist Church. No record of her birth or formal adoption has yet been located.     On 20 Jun 1883 William and his family sailed from Plymouth, England for Australia aboard the "Duke of Buckingham" which arrived in Cooktown, Queensland on 11 Aug 1883, as Brisbane was in flood, and then finally arrived in Brisbane on 20 Aug 1883. Also on board was Martha's mother, Eliza and her remaining children. In 1885 they were all living at 3 Mulgrave Street, Spring Hill, Brisbane, and they named the house "Towngate"

    There was a substantial number of Prentices living in Northamptonshire, especially from the early 1600s century, with a few going back to the 1300s, like John who was a Burgess of Northampton in 1380. Many of them, including the family above, are likely to have come originally from Lincolnshire.
