We are working with Wendy Prentice, Karen Raspin, Susan Mawson and Ian Prentice in tracing the ancestry of the Prentices who lived in the Oundle area of Northamptonshire, England. Using their information, and census records from 1841 through 1901, we have compiled the following family tree.

1. The earliest member of this family is not presently known. He probably lived in Lincolnshire or Suffolk where the only other early recorded instances of the forename "Chistopher" exists; there was a considerable movement away from Lincolnshire in the 1300s, 1400s and 1500s and several Prentice families settled in Northamptonshire. Presently known children of this member include:

Thomas m. Dorothy Blind. By email of 20 Apr 2006, Wendy Prentice advises that Dorothy "came from Cripplegate, London, and gave her maiden name as Blind." She d. 1620, age 50.

Mary Stokes on 4 Oct 1736, in North Marston, Buckinghamshire, England. They had four children in 13 years. He died in September 1785 in North Marston, Buckinghamshire. 4 children:

After William Prentice 1724, moved in with his Uncle Mathew at Bluntisham (see discussion under Mathew Prentice, below), William Prentice rented the Manor Farm of Bluntisham which he farmed successfully and during his lifetime bought considerable property of his own. When he died he left the bulk of his property with his house to William Tebbutt.

In 1725-6 he bought a house and a cottage in Blunitsham, Hunts, where his wife had connections. He then moved to Bluntisham where he lived the rest of his life. Mathew Prentice of Bluntisham had no children and his wife died in 1744. His nephew William Prentice, 1724, son of his brother William came to live with him and he left him his house and the Bulk of his property in Bluntisham when he died in 1762. She m. Jonas Tebbutt on 22 May 1761 in Aldwinkle. He was b. 16 Sep 1737 in Sudborough, Northamptonshire, England, and d. 1769, age 32 years, at Lilford, Northamptonshire where he is bur. in the Lilford Churchyard. He was the son of Jonas and Susannah Tebbutt, left his home village and took the tenancy of a Farm at Wigsthorpe on the Lilford Estate.An Ancestor Chart for him can be found at Ancestry.com: Tebbutt Family Tree. 2. Susanna/Susan Tebbutt, b. 26 Mar 1764, Wigsthorpe. She was bur. in Keyston in 1852. She m. Mr. Pearson in 1781. Children:
   1. William Pearson.
   2. Ann Pearson. She married her cousin Joseph Tebbutt, son of Susan's brother, John.
3. John Tebbutt, b.c. 1765, Lilford, Northamptonshire. . . . . . . . [11]
4. William Tebbutt, b. 25 Feb 1767, Lilford, Northamptonshire. He died in 1815. Buried Independent Chapel, Bluntisham. Fine tombstone.He m. another family member, Ann Thompson of Aldwinckle, and they had four children. He inherited a house ( The Walnut Trees) and Land in Bluntisham, Hunts, from his Uncle William Prentice.
   He continued to farm the land he inherited from his Uncle and the Manor farm and considerably added to his property and wealth before he died. William Tebbutt followed his wife?s lead in joining the non-conformist church started in Bluntisham by his friend Coxe Feary. In 1813 he let his house and farms in Bluntisham to his brother John Tebbutt and went to live in the next village of Earth.
   In 1815 he was kicked on the leg by a horse at the Pickerel Inn, Cambridge, and the wound set up a fever from which he died.
   William m. Ann Crouch who was the niece of his Aunt Susan the wife of Mathew. William and Ann had two sons:
   1. Mathew Prentice. He m. Blanch Freeman in 1774 and died in 1782. After Mathew's death, William's nephew ,William Tebbutt (#10v below, son of his sister Mary), came to live with him.
   2. John Prentice, b. 1756 and d. 3 years later in1759, age 3 years.
   Ann (Thompson) widow of William Tebbutt, after his death married William Asplan, Senior, of Bluntisham. Her daughter Mary had previously married the son William Asplan Junior, also of Bluntisham.

After Jonas died, Mary Tebbutt, the widow, married John Mason Hustwaite of Bythorn, Hunts in 1778. By email of 6 Jul 2008, Anthony Gordon Coales relates that Mary was buried at Keyston, Hunts in 1820 (note, however, that the date conflicts with the death date for Mary given above as 16 Dec 1787).

11.  John Tebbutt, son of Mary Prentice and John Tebbutt, b.c. 1765, Lilford, Northamptonshire. Christened at Lilford 3 Dec 1765. He d. 1833 or 1837 and was buried at Upton.

He m. Mary Chew on 22 Mar 1787 in Thorp Arch(?), and started the Upton Line of the Tebbutt Family. She was b. 9 Jun 1766 in Thorpe Arch(?).

I give and devise all that my Comunionable or Tenement and Heredits lying and being in Bluntisham Huntingdonshire with the Appurts unto and to the use of my Nephew William Pearson his heirs and assigns for ever and as and for and concerning all my personal Estate of what nature or kind soever I give and bequeath the same unto my Nieces Elizabeth Pearson Susanna Pearson Mary Pearson Jane Pearson and Lucy Pearson to be equally divided between them share and share alike and to be paid to them respectively as they attain the age of twenty one years and in the mean time until they shall respectively attain such age I request and direct my Brothers William Tibbutt and John Tibbutt and the survivor of them his Exors and Admon to place out the parts and shares of my said personal estate at interest on real or other good security until my said Nieces shall respectively become intitled to receive the same under and by virtue of this my Will and to apply the Interest from time to time arising there from for and towards the maintenance and education of my same nieces during their respective infancies and

I constitute and appoint my said Brothers William Tibbutt and John Tibbutt joint Executors of this my Will and hereby revoking all former Wills by me made I declare this to be my last Will and testament provided and lastly I do hereby will and direct that it shall and may be lawful to and for the said William Tibbutt and John Tibbutt their Exors and admons respectively out of any money which shall come to them or any of their hands by virtue of this my will to and reimburse themselves all such loss charges damages and expences as they respectively shall or may be put unto in or about the execution of the trusts hereby in them repos and that they shall not be chargeable with or accountable for any sums or sums of money to be received by virtue of this my Will other than such as they shall actually receive nor shall any of them be charged with or be accountable for the Receipt or Receipts of the other of them but every of them for his own acts Receipts and wilful defaults. Nor shall they or any of them be answerable for any loss which may happen by any other means in the execution or management of the trusts hereby in them reposed without their respective wilful default

Appendix B: WILL OF JONAS TEBBUTT

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Jonas Tebbutt of Wigsthorpe in the Parish of Lilford in the County of Northampton being weak of Body but of perfect Mind and Memory do make this my Last Will and Testament.

IMPRIMIS I give to my Son Jonas Tebbutt Fifty pounds. ITEM I give to my Son John Tebbutt Fifty pounds. ITEM I give to my Daughter Sussanna Tebbutt Fifty pounds. ITEM I give to my Son William Tebbutt Fifty pounds. ITEM I give to my Son Mathew Tebbutt Fifty pounds and I do appoint my Brother John Tebbutt and my Brother John Prentice Trustees for my Children all the rest residue and remainder of my Goods and Chattels Implements of Husbandry with all other things of what kind soever to me belonging I give to my Loving Wife whom I appoint the whole and sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament declaring and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this Fourth Day of October in the year of our Lord one Thousand seven hundred and fifty nine.

Appendix C: Will of Mathew Prentice of Bluntisham

THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me Mathew Prentice of Bluntisham in the County of Huntingdon Baker made this Twenty fifth day of May in the Year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and Sixty one as follows (that is to say) I give and devise All that my Commonable Messuage or Tenement situate standing and being in Bluntisham aforesaid wherein I now dwell with the Outhouses Commons and Appurtenances thereto belonging AND also all that my lott of Fen or Marsh Ground situate lying and being in Earith Fen in the said County of Huntingdon containing Six Acres (be the same more or less) and lying next the Bank therewith the Appurtenances AND also all those my Five Acres and a half of Arable Land lying and being in Bluntisham aforesaid which I lately purchased of William Lambard with the Appurtenances unto and to the Use of my Nephew William Prentice (Son of my Brother William Prentice) his Heirs and Assigns for ever

ITEM all that Messuage or Tenement situate standing and being in Bluntisham aforesaid next the Estate now or late of Thomas Embrey on the one side thereof and the Estate now or late of Henry Edwards on the other side thereof AND also all those Four Acres of Fenn or Marsh Ground in Bluntisham West Fenn in Bluntisham aforesaid being the Common belonging to the said last mentioned Messuage or Tenemnet with their Appurtenances and late the Estate of Willim Whitehead (being a Mortgage Title only) and all my Estate Right Title and Interest therein and all Monies due thereon and arising thereout and therefrom I give devise and bequeath unto and to the use of my said Nephew William Prentice his Heirs Executors Administrators and assigns for ever ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Niece Hannah Taylor Daughter of my said Brother William Prentice the Sum of Five pounds of Lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid her by my Executor herein after named at her Age of Twenty one Years or day of Marriage which shall first happen ITEM I give and bequeath unto Ann Crouch now living with me the Sum of Twenty pounds of like lawful Money to be paid by my Executor within Twelve Kalendor Months next after my Decease

ITEM I give and bequeath unto John Elizabeth Mary and Susanna Prentice Children of my said Brother William Prentice the Sum of Five pounds apiece of like lawful Money at their several Ages of Twenty one years or days of Marriage which shall first happen AND I give to the Children of my Nephew John Prentice Five pounds of like lawful Money to be equally divided between them by my Executor herein Named within Twelve Kalendor Months next after my Decease

ITEM I give and bequeath unto the three Children of my Brother Thomas Prentice Five pounds apiece of like lawful Money when they shall severally attain their respective Ages of Twenty one years AND I give and bequeath unto Robert William and Elizabeth Perkins Children of my Sister Elizabeth Perkins late the Wife of Robert Perkins Five pounds apiece of like lawful Money when they shall attain their respective ages of Twenty one Years

ITEM all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Goods Chattels ready Money and Securities for Money Book and other Debts Plate Household Goods and all other my Personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature kind or quality soever the same be subject to the Payment of all my Just Debts Legacies Funeral Charges and Probate of this my Will I give and bequeath unto my said Nephew William Prentice his Executors and Administrators for ever Absolutely AND I do hereby make ordain Constitute and Appoint my said Nephew William Prentice sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament

AND LASTLY I hereby revoke all former and other Wills by me heretofore made IN WITNESS whereof I the said Mathew Prentice the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament set my Hand and Seal the Day and Year above written.

Died at Wadenhoe Dec 16 1787.

The Last Will and Testament of me Mary Tebbutt of Wadnow Widow of Jonas Tebbutt late of Sudborough Parks in the County of Northampton Made the 26th. Day of November in the Year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Five, I give and bequeath unto my Son William Newton the Sum of Forty Pounds and to my Son Sanders Tebbutt the Sum of one shilling and to my Daughter Lucy the wife of Philip Allen the Sum of Twenty Pounds with such Part of my Wearing apperil as she shall Choose and to my Daughter Fanny Marshall the rest and residue of all my Money Goods and effects whatsoever the same shall consist of she Paying the above Lagacys within Twelve Months after my Decease and my Funeral Expences and I appoint her my sole Executor of this my Will hereby revoking all former wills which I may at any time have Made.
