4. William Prentice (son of Thomas Prentice and Jane Gilbert) was born 30 Oct 1862 at Overtown, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and d. 31 Dec 1947, Greensburg, Westmoreland Co., PA, age 85.

He married Catherine "Mary" Kennedy on 31 Dec 1882 in Wishaw, Lanarkshire. She was born May 1863 (per 1900 census) in Wishaw, Scotland and apparently d. before 1930 as William was living with his son, Alexander in Latrobe in1930. Mary Kennedy's parents were Alexander Kennedy, coalminer, and, perhaps Catherine Hay. By email of 27 Sep 2005, Christine Hadden provides the following information from their wedding certificate:

    Marriages in the Parish of Cambusnethan, 1884, Page 5, No. 9 Married on the 31st day of December, 1883 at 101 MArshall Street, Wishaw after Banns according to the forms of the Established Church of Scotland William Prentice, coalminer, bachelor, age 21 of Bentfoot Row, Overtown (Wishaw). Parents Thomas Dymock Prentice, engine Keeper and Jane Prentice m.s. Gilbert (deceased)

    and Mary Kennedy, housekeeper, spinster, age 19 of 101 Marshall Street, Wishaw. Parents were Alexander Kennedy, coalminer and Catherine Kennedy m.s. Hay (deceased).

    Signed Alexander Harper, minister, Thomas Russell, witness, Maggie Calderhead, witness.

    Recorded January 4th 1884 at Wishaw by Thomas Steele, assistant registrar

William was a coal miner in Wishaw. He and his family came to America in 1885 and went to work in the coal mines of Latrobe, PA. They appear in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Westmoreland Co., PA census and in the 1930 Latrobe, Westmoreland Co., PA census..

Shown living with William and his family in the 1900 census is Mary's father, Alexander Kennedy, b. Feb 1826. One could infer that Alexander's wife also came to America but was deceased by 1900.

The following is from William's obituary dated Wed., 31 Dec 1947:

    "William Prentice, 85 died Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock in Westmoreland Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Scotland and came to the United States 62 years ago, settling in Latrobe. For the past 14 years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. W.P. McGrane, 644 Grove St. Greensburg. He had resided in Latrobe for about 50 years and until his retirement 20 years ago was a fire boss and pumper in the mines near Latrobe.

    Besides his daughter here these other children survive: Thomas D., Chalfont, Pa.; Alex, New York City; John, Latrobe. Twenty-eight grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the United Brethern Church of Latrobe and of the LOOM of Latrobe.

    Friends will be received at the home of his daughter here where funereal services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Fred Turney, Interment will be in Unity cemetery, near Latrobe."

    Idaho Statesman, The (Boise, ID) - Tuesday, April 29, 2014: Brett Alan Prentice

    Brett Alan Prentice 1958~2014 Brett Alan Prentice gone but not forgotten;

    He is survived by his step-mother, brother, daughter, son and grandchildren. Brett was a devoted father who cared deeply for each and every one of us and an avid outdoorsman, always looking for a way to enjoy nature. He will be missed by his family and good friends. His fishing cohorts will miss him when time comes for the next fishing trip but his name will be bantered about with revelry and mirth because all will remember the good times. His wish was to be remembered with fondness and joy, and we will oblige. Farewell Brett, you've left us better off for having known you.

    Brett will be remembered in a private service later this fall; in lieu of flowers reach out to someone in need and do what you can even if just to offer words of encouragement or solace.

He married unknown. Children per his obituary, above;

  1. Son Prentice.
  2. Dau. Prentice.
