By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2000 and Revised: 6 Jul 2014

Update of 6 Jul 2014: This article has now been incorporated into our Fall 2000 article entitled "John Prentice, the Laird of Stone." See now that other article.

We are helping Doug Leith trace the ancestry of his Helen Prentice who m. Alexander Whitelaw on 15 Jun 1866 at Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland.

Although confirmation is needed, we think we have traced her Prentice back to:

1. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1775-1790. The IGI indicates Thomas was b. c. 1787, but contains no further information about him or his parents.

He m. Agnes Anderson. She was b. c. 1788, Livingston, West Lothian. Thomas and Agnes had a son:

  1. George Prentice who the IGI shows as b. 8 Dec 1810, Livingston. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [10]

10. George Prentice, who the IGI shows as b. 8 Dec 1810 at Livingston and chr. 5 May 1811 at Livingston (the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census says he was b. c. 1813 and in 1841, 1851 and 1861 was living in Livingston, West Lothian). According to the marriage certificate of his daughter, Helen. George was deceased by 15 Jun 1866.

He is probably the George Prentice who m. Helen Geddes on 14 May 1837 at Livingston, West Lothian. Helen was b. c. 1814, , Lasswade, Edinburghshire (per 1841 and 1861 census). Children:

She m. Alexander Whitelaw on 15 Jun 1866 in Livingston, mentioned at the beginning of this article. He was b. in Mid Calder MLN 10 Jun 1832 (but his marriage certificate says he was then 30 and would have been b. c. 1836), son of David Whitelaw and Catherine Millar. 14. Elizabeth Whitelaw, born in Cramond in 1881.

32 George Prentice, b. c. 1852, Livingston, Linlithgow. At home in 1851 census. Not in 1861 census.

George m. Margaret Duthie , dau. of David Duthie and Margaret Robertson, per Christine Hadden's emails of 4 & 6Jul 2014.They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. George Prentice, b. c. 1878, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [33]

33. George Prentice was b. c. 1878 (per 1930 census) in Scotland, as were his parents.

Christine Hadden's email of 4 Jul 2014 indicates that George sailed from the UK aboard the Orca on 22 Oct 1923 with his son, John age 14 (b. c. 1909) and son, David, age 7 (b. c. 1916) and that they had an Edinburgh residence. We would have expected to find their arrival, like Mary's arrival, at Ellis Island in late 1923 or early 1924. However, George, and his sons and ship, do not appear in Ancestry.com's Ellis Island records. The records are either incomplete, or they arrived at a different port.

George and John did obviously arrive, but we have problem with George's son, David. David does not appear with George and his family in 1930 census records. The answer might be that David died between 1923 and and the 1930 census.

George and his family settled in 1924 at 28 Church St., Herminie, PA. He appears in the 1930 census in Indiana, Allegheny Co., PA, where he was a Timberman in a Coal Mine.

He m. 1st Unknown while still living in Scotland, and prior to 1909. Children of George and his 1st unknown wife per 1930 census:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1909, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [34]
  2. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1913, Lanark., Scotland. 1930 at home. 1940 not in census. It is unclear whether he is the Alexander Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 27 Jun 1915, obtained his SS# in PA, and d. 30 Apr 2003 in Galeton, Potter Co., PA. If so, his wife might be the Helen Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 28 Apr 1919, obtained her SS# in PA, and d. Nov 1985 in Galeton, Potter Co., PA.

He m. 2nd Mary Nicoll in 1918, Edinburgh, Midlothian, St. Giles District, Scotland. She was b. c. 1885, Scotland, as were her parents.

Ellis Island immigration records describe her as arriving aboard the "Assyria" with her sons, Alexander and William, on 20 Nov 1924, born in "Lanark." (Lanark or Lanarkshire?), Scotland, 5', brown hair, blue eyes.

Children of George and his 2nd wife per 1930 census:

  1. William Prentice, b. c. 1922, , S. Queensferry, Scotland. which lay just west of Edinburgh. 1930 at home. 1940 not in census.
  2. Agnes Prentice, b. c. 1926-7, PA. 1930 at home. 1940 not in census.

We do not have the marriage certificate for George's 2nd marriage, but it would normally provide the names of both sets of parents, and those, in turn, would provide the names of their parents.if married after 1854. Death records also contain the parents' information. If you are a descendant and will contact us, we will tell you how to obtain those documents.

34. John Prentice, b. c. 1909, Scotland. 1930 at home in Indiana, Allegheny Co., PA. 1940 in Hampton, Allegheny Co., PA, with his wife and family.

He m. Sylvania Lucy Byrd, b. c. 1914, PA. Children:

"Suzanne Marie Fogle and Robert George Peentice are planning a July 28, 1990 wedding. She is the dau. of Betty Johnson of Latrobe...Her fiance, son of Sylvania Prentice of Ambridge, is an Army veteran and a painter."
