Stephen died 14 March 1821 and is buried in St. Matthew's Churchyard, Ipswich. Elizabeth died 2 February 1834 and is buried with Stephen.

Stephen's Will: Stephen, who called himself "Stephen Prentice the Elder" wrote his Will on the 19th January 1818. He wrote a Codicil on the 31st January 1821.

In his Will, Stephen tells us he was a butcher. He left everything to his wife, Elizabeth, including the shop and any other property he had in Ipswich until she died or remarried. When either of these events happened, the estate was to be sold and the proceeds be given equally to his children: James Felgate, Thomas, William, Samuel, Edmund, John, George, Robert, Susanna, and Maria, and his granddaughter Sarah Bristo. There was no mention of Stephen who was baptized on the 28th October 1781 and there is no record of his burial in the registers of St. Lawrence or St. Clements, Ipswich.

In the Codicil, Stephen states that he has already given money to some of his children, namely William £37, Samuel £55, Edmund 50, John £20, James Felgate £15, Thomas £100, and George, deceased, £45. These sums were to be taken into account in the final distribution of his estate. Stephen's Will was probated on the 23rd May 1821 by Elizabeth Prentice, Widow, and James Welman the Executor.

50. Samuel Prentice (son of Stephen Prentice and Elizabeth Felgate) was baptized on 25 May 1788 at the church of St. Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk. He d. 24 Feb 1852.

At an unknown date before 1809 (when he married his first wife), Samuel left Ipswich to settle in the London area, perhaps using money his father had advanced to him, and opened a butcher shop. Samuel died on 24 Feb 1852 in Upper Tooting, Streatham, Surrey, aged 62.

Samuel m., 1st, Elizabeth Gee on 7 Aug 1809 in St. Anne's Church, Soho. They were described as "both of this Parish". Elizabeth was the daughter of Lawrence and Mary Jee. She was baptized 19 Jan 1790 at St. Mary's, Leicester. A witness to this marriage was William Prentice, Samuel's brother who had married Elizabeth's sister, Catherine Gee, in 1806 in the same church.

Samuel Prentice m., 2nd Martha Green in 1836, 27 years after he married Elizabeth. In the St. Nicholas' Church in Brighton parish register record of this marriage, he is described as a widower, so Elizabeth apparently died before 1836.

It is unknown if Samuel and any children by Elizabeth or Martha, but his 1844 Will leaves significant sums of money to:

  • Francis Smedley Prentice.
  • Samuel Prentice the Younger.

Samuel Prentice then apparently took a 3rd, common law, wife, Eleanor Vauzey. In his Will, Samuel refers to Eleanor as "Eleanor Vauzey who now lives with me". However, Eleanor referred to herself as Samuel's wife throughout her life with him but on her death certificate she is called by her maiden name - Eleanor Vauzey.

Eleanor was the daughter of Mathew and Ann [Simmonds or Symonds] Vauzey. She was born on 4 May 1815 and baptized on 16 July 1815 at Holy Trinity Church, Clapham, Surrey. Eleanor's baptism record shows the family lived in Kennington, Surrey.

At the time of the census she was a visitor at an address (not given) in Wirtemburg Street, Clapham. This street no longer exists. Part of it is now a housing estate and part of it was rebuilt as Cubitt Terrace.

At the time of her death on 15 Jan 1888, Eleanor Vauzey was living with her daughter, Elizabeth Ann, at 42 Lillieshall Road, Clapham. This road still exists (1999). It is quite close to Holy Trinity Church where she was baptized. Eleanor's Will left everything to her daughter, Elizabeth Ann.

120. Stephen Felgate Prentice (son of Stephen Grigson Prentice, #3a), b. 2 Aug 1842 at Pentonville, London, England. son of Stephen Grigson Prentice and Sophia Simmonds. By email of 4 Oct 2002, Anne Rivers thinks Stephen accompanied his parents when they emigrated to NZ in 1856 although Anne has not located a confirming passenger list. Catherine Pivac's email of 3 Jan 2008 relates that:

Stephen wrote of arriving in NZ in 1855 just 3 months after a severe earthquake which hit the Wellington area causing much damage. This obviously refers to New Zealand’s strongest recorded earthquake which struck Wellington on 23 January 1855 causing not only widespread damage, but the coastline to rise in places by 1.5 metres.

On arrival Stephen travelled to Canterbury and Otago trying his hand at gold prospecting, sheep farming and other pursuits, and arrived back in Wellington about three years later.

By 1861 he was living in Wairoa in the Hawke’s Bay where he became a Storekeeper, Registrar of Births, Deaths, Marriages, and for a time, Postmaster. In 1867 he bought a cutter i.e. the Grayling, for the Wairoa/Napier trade which the same year sustained considerable damage and was subsequently sold.

On 19 April 1865 he married Hannah Down, the daughter of George & Mere Down, and six of their eight children were born in or near Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay. In 1880 he appears in Masterton as a Debt Collector/Accountant and in August of that year his 7th child (Stephen Filgate Prentice Jnr) was born. During November 1881 he took out a Lease for commercial property in Manaia and the following year their 8th and last child, a daughter, was born; Stephen and Hannah appear to have separated about this time.

By 1892 Hannah and the children were living in Pirongia, where Hannah bought the Shamrock Hotel which was renamed Prentice’s Boarding House.

During August 1896 Stephen auctioned his furniture and stock-in-trade and prepared to leave the district of Manaia. Two years later, on 24 July 1898 just a few weeks after applying for charitable aid, Stephen died of throat cancer and was buried in a public grave.

In Ann Rivers' email of 4 Oct 2002, she relates that in the writings of Maria (3.4, below) about early Masterton she wrote "father and the boys chipped in the wheat seed...." and ..."one of the boys broke in a bullock. He had a sheepskin for a saddle and used to ride to Masterton in state."

Footnote 1: Sue Smith's email of 11 Apr 2016:

Dear Sir, my name is Sue Smith, I live in Caboolture just north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. I am the grand-daughter of the Rev Cyril William Morsley who was married to Dorothy Jean Prentice, the daughter of George Prentice.

Dorothy was my step-grandmother and was known to me as Doff and she was Cyril's 2nd wife. He married his 1st wife (my grandmother), Annie Dunstan, on the 26th May 1924 and they had 3 children, Ivan, Elaine & Dorothea. Elaine is my mother. Annie died on the 17th January 1947.

Cyril was born in Plumstead England and migrated to Australia in 1912 as a 21 year old. He was ordained as a Methodist Minister on the 28th February 1921 at the Albert Street Methodist Church Brisbane and served in various churches throughout Queensland, the Wilston address was just one of them, till he retired from active service in 1949. The Morsleys rented a house at Shorncliffe from the Prentice family in 1943 for 2 years, however, my mother tells me that Cyril and Dorothy had met before this but she doesn't know how or when. All she knows is that they were friends and that is what lead to the Morsleys renting the Prentice house. The Morsleys then moved to Lutwyche briefly but returned to live at Shorncliffe in late 1946 just before Annie's sudden death in January 1947. Cyril served in WW1 at Gallipoli and France in the 3rd Field Ambulance and served in WW2 as a Chaplain at the Chermside Army Barracks.

Dorothy and Cyril were married on the 17th August 1952. They lived at Shorncliffe briefly then around 1953 they moved to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, an hour north of Brisbane. From there they moved to Kenmore in western Brisbane around 1960 then to the John Wesley Garden Settlement at Chermside around 1970. Due to their failing health Dorothy and Cyril moved in with my parents at their Caloundra home in June 1981. After further deterioration of their health they were moved to the Sunnymeade Aged Care Home in Caboolture where Cyril died on the 26th March 1983 aged 91. At his request he was privately interred. Dorothy remained at Sunnymeade and died on the 13th May 1986 aged 86. Her funeral was held at the Albany Creek Crematorium.

I am currently transcribing my grandfather's WW1 diaires and his life after the war. While researching I came across the PrenticeNet website. I would like to correct an error in the listing below from the PrenticeNet website and that is, that Cyril Morsley was born on the 19th July 1891 not on the 29th December 1900 as stated. I have highlighted the error in red. I can also confirm that Dorothy Jean Prentice was born on the 29th December 1900, not the 26th January 1900.

    Yours sincerely, Sue Smith.
