Original Article: Oliver J. Prentice was born in Lewes, Sussex, England about 1868 (per 1881 census where he appears as student at Independent College, Staplegrove, Somerset). He first appears in the 1910 Chicago, Cook Co., IL census, and later in the 1920 Radnor, Delaware Co., PA census.

Oliver m. Irene A. Wilson on 25 Oct 1892 in Cook County, IL (per IL Marriage Index). Irene was b. c. 1872, IL. Children:

• Agnes G. Prentice, b. c. 1896, IL. Living at home in 1920.
• Faith Prentice, b. c. 1898, IL. Living at home in 1920.
• Marie L. Prentice, b. c. 1903, IL. Living at home in 1920.

Based on the Oliver's marriage date and place, he would have emigrated from England to the United States between 1869 and 1892. A check of the IGI does not disclose any Oliver Prentice born in England in the appropriate time frame.

Neither does Oliver appear in our 1880 IL census excerpts. Whether he was living elsewhere, or was missed, is not yet known.

Who are Oliver Prentice's Parents?

Oliver is almost certainly the son of John Prentice, b. 15 Jun 1836, Tynemouth, Northumberland, and d. 17 Mar 1877 (per IGI) and Catherine Oliver, 17 Jun 1844, North Shields, Northumberland, who appears in the 1881 census on High Street (Tyne House), Lewes St Ann, Sussex as the Principal of School; her students include her children:

1. Mary Maudlin Prentice, b. 24 MAR 1869, Lewes.
2. Kate Prentice, b. 13 Dec 1870, Lewes and d. 1934 (also per IGI_.
3. Grace M. Prentice, b. c. 1876, Lewes.

Also a student at the school is Amelia Prentice, b. c. 1868, Sunderland, and Jane Oliver, Catherine's sister, b. c. 1848, North Shields, and also called "Principal Of School".

Other children of John and Catherine shown in UK records are:

1. Blanche Catherine Prentice, b. 1865, Lewes.
2. Helen Mercy Prentice, b. 1873, Lewes and d. 1874, Lewes.
3. Grace Mentone Prentice, b. 1874, Lewes.

We also found a record of an Edith Prentice, b. c. 1773 and d. at Lewes in 1859 at the age of 86. It may be that Edith is John's mother.

The IGI shows that the 1836 John Prentice is the son of another John Prentice and Catherine Oliver, perhaps b. c. 1800-1815.
