Notes:

  • [2.03-1]: By email of 15 Feb 2006, David Nelson advises that family lore has it that when Martin Prentice had a sign painted for his general store in Pleasant Mount, the name was spelled wrong and so his branch became "Prentiss."

Comment: The rationale would seem to be that changing the family name is free, but it would have cost money to repaint the sign. Amusing, if true, but it would also be a telling commentary on the relative values they placed on their rich Prentice family heritage as compared to the small sum needed for a sign change. Shakespeare said, "He who stealeth of me my silver, robbeth me of trash; but he who taketh my good name, steals what he cannot be benefitted by, but leaves me bankrupt."

  • [2.03-2]: By email of 15 Feb 2006, David Nelson advises that George was an Attorney in NJ.
  • [2.03-3]: By email of 15 Feb 2006, David Nelson advises that Margaret ran a boarding house and lived with George's daughter (also named Margaret) in Carteret, NJ after she gave up the boarding house.

  • [3.10-1]: David Nelson's email of 16 Feb 2006 provides the following additional information about John Prentiss:
Family lore has it that John Prentiss had the last horse drawn cart in San Francisco. No trucks for him! We have a letter he wrote to Margaret Prentiss about his experiences in the 1906 earthquake.
  • [3.10-2]: David Nelson's email of 16 Feb 2006 provides the following additional information about the Hawkins family:

Carrie Hawkins, with her sister Isabelle, were orphaned early when both parents died. Her mother, Maria Sherwood, was the daughter of Stephen Sherwood[3.10-3], he of 3 wives and a gold miner (among other things), who was the brother of John Bennett Sherwood who lived in Pleasant Mount, PA. The girls were sent to PA to live with John Sherwood, thus the connection with the Prentiss's. The Sherwoods came from Stratfield (now Bridgeport) CT via NY.

The Hawkins came from RI, Abraham being the earliest we know of. He fought in the Revolutionary War and settled in Wallingford, VT. He had two wives and 16 children. George Washington Hawkins was his first born (in NH) and had two wives as well with 21 children. He lived near Plattsburgh NY and in the 1840s moved his family to Lake County IL (his last child was born in IL). Tertius would seem to be the third child but was the fourth by the second wife, Isabelle Stetson. She was descended from Cornet Robert Stetson who was prominent in King Phillip's War in the 1690s in MA. The hatmaker branches off very early winding up in Philadelphia.

An invaluable document of the Hawkins is the Harriet Colby will which lists all descendents of both George's wives down to my grandmother's generation. Harriet was the daughter of the first wife, Abigail Harrington.

  • [3.10-3]: By email of 5 Dec 2009, Grant Davis provides the following additional information about Stephen Sherwood:

"Stephen Sherwood, the father of Maria Sherwood and grandfather of Carrie Hawkins had a mine in Trinity County. He was one of the original settlers of White Rock, a ghost town now. He was there from about 1880-1894. He is buried there with his youngest son Wills. Another son, Orin, also died in that area (Weaverville). I believe Stephen went down to San Francisco several times for different reasons. In fact he may have spent some Winters there (possibly with Carrie and her family)."

Stephen Sherwood appears in the 1880 census in Hoboken, Trinity Co., CA, as b.c. 1812, PA, as a widower and a miner, with his father b. in NY and mother in Germany. Additional information about him, together with his Ancestor Chart, can be found at ancestry.com. See also TheStephenSherwoodLetters Blogspot for more about his roots and descendants.

Notes:

  • [4.11-1]: David Nelson's email of 16 Feb 2006 provides the following additional information about the Nelson family:
The Nelsons come from Sweden via IA. Samuel Nelson was the immigrant and is a black sheep, having been kicked out of his home in San Francisco near the time of the earthquake. He's a dead end as all we know about his origin is what is in the 1900 census. He was president of the San Francisco Casket Co. which he founded and then left about the time he was kicked out of his home. His wife, Anna Lisa Tell, immigrated in 1866 and we have lots of data on her going back to the earliest records (1600s) in Sweden.
