We are helping Shirley Newby and Caroline Guest in tracing their Prentice ancestry. Here is what we have so far:

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1811, perhaps in, or near, Birmingham, where he married, or John might have been born in or near Kings Norton where his children were born. John died 5 Mar 1851 in Birmingham and does not appear in the 1851 census. (Note: Birmingham grew rapidly during the period covered in this article and annexed a number of nearby communities. that should be kept in mind in seeking birth, marriage and death records.) He appears in the 1841 census in Coston Hackett, Worcestershire, census

John m. Sarah Waring at St. Martins Church, Birmingham. Sarah was b. c. 1812, Kings Norfton, Worcestershire, and was a Bonnet Maker. Sarah appears in the 1851 Warwickshire census as head of the household at 17 Tennant St., Birmingham, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Children:

  1. Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1831, Worcestershire, England. Not in `1851 and later census records.
  2. Mary Ann Prentice, bapt. 25 Jan 1835, Kings Norton. . . . . . . . . [2]

2. Mary Ann Prentice, bapt. 25 Jan 1835 at St. Nicholas Church, Kings Norton, Worcestershire and d. 1920, Kings Norton.

She married Edward Shale on 14 Aug 1853 at St. Bartholomews, Edgbaston, Birmingham. War., England. Wedding witnesses included Sarah (Mary's mother) and Thomas Jones (Mary's step father). By email of 29 Dec 2003, Bernadette advises that Edward was bap. 10 Sep 1833, Birmingham, St Phillips, and d. 1894, Birmingham, War., England. He was a glass cutter and son of Thomas Shale (~1793-1890) and Sophia Allen (bap. 1788-1861) . In the 1891 census they lived at 83 Ellen Street, All Saints, War., England. Children (per Bernadette Siebert):

  1. Martha Shale, b. 1854, Birmingham, St Martin's. She m. George Hinton on 7 Jul 1872, Birmingham.
  2. Eliza Shale, b. c. 1855 and bap.30 Aug 1857, Birmingham. She m. Charles Henry Bryant in 1878, Birmingham.
  3. Lucy Ann Shale, b. 1856, Birmingham. She m. William Savage in 1878, Birmingham.
  4. Louisa Shale, bap. 25 Dec 1859, Birmingham.
  5. William Shale, b. 1863 Birmingham and d. there 1864.
  6. Thomas Shale, b. c. 1864, Birmingham, St. Martin's.
  7. Laura "Lilly" Shale, b. c. 1867, Birmingham, St. Martin's.
  8. Sarah Jane Shale, b. 1869, Birmingham, St. Martin's. She m. Albert Teakle in 1889, Birmingham.
  9. Mary Ann Shale, bap. 24 Dec 1871, Birmingham.
  10. Pheobe Shale, b. 1872, Birmingham. She m. James Foster in 1891, Aston, Birmingham.
  11. Gertrude Shale, b. 28 Jan 1875, Birmingham, Ladywood. She m. William John Collins on 2 May 1895, Birmingham. Bernadette's maiden name was Collins and Gertrude and William are her great grandparents.

3. George Prentice, bapt. 14 May 1835 at St. Nicholas Church, Kings Norton, Worcestershire and d. in Sep 1917 in Birmingham.. He was living at home in 1851 and was a Lamp Maker. In 1901 he was living with the family of his son, George.

He married Sarah Knight on 25 Apr 1858 at St. Martins Church in Birmingham. In the 1881 Birminham census they were living on Beach St., 13 Court 4. In the 1901 census George was an "Engine Fitter" and appears without Sarah and she may then deceased. Children:

  1. Sarah A. Prentice, b. Sep 1858 in Birmingham and was married in March 1883 in Birmingham to Joseph Taylor.
  2. Emma Prentice, b. Mar 1864 in Kings Norton and was married in Sep 1891 in Birmingham to William Rowley.
  3. George Prentice, b. Dec 1867 in Aston and married Aza Henderson, widow, on 6 Feb 1897. In the 1901 census he was a "Measuring Tape Case Maker" He died Dec 1939 in Bromsgrove. Daughter (per 1901 census):
    1. Aza Prentice, b. c. 1898, Birmingham.
  4. Walter Prentice, b. Jun 1870 in Birmingham and d. Mar 1954 in Birmingham. He m. Annie James in Feb 1894. She was b. c. 1873 in Staffordshire. They appear in the 1901 census in Birmingham with their son:
    1. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1895 Birmingham.
  5. Frederick Prentice, b. Mar 1873 in Bham, Warwickshire (per 1901 census). He was Bricklayer in the 1901 census. He married Elizabeth Davis in Dec 1896 at St. James Church Hendsworth. She was b. c. 1877 in Bham, Warwickshire (per 1901 census). They appear in the 1901 census in Birmingham as visitors in the home of Robert and Frances Slack with their daughter:
    1. Gladys Prentice, b. c. 1900-1, Staffordshire
  6. William "Walter" Prentice, b. 17 Nov 1874, Warwickshire. He was married in Dec 1896 in West Bromwich to Julia Marshall. She was b. c. 1877, Handsworth(?)Staffordshire, dau. of Thomas and Ellen Marshall. They are Shirley Newby's grandarents. They appear in the 1901 census in Smethwick, Staffordshire, with their children:
    1. Arthur Prentice, b. c. 1900, Smethwick, Staffordshire.
    2. Elsie Prentice, b. c. 1897, Smethwick, Staffordshire.
    3. Harold Prentice, b. c. 1899, Smethwick, Staffordshire.
  7. Ada Prentice, b. Dec 1877 in Birmingham. She was married in Dec 1897 in Birmingham to Leonard Whitehouse.

4. John Prentice, b. c. 1840, Kings Norton. Chain Maker in 1851. Although confirmation is still lacking, he may be the John Prentice who m. Jane, mentioned in Caroline Guest's Prentice List posting of 3 Nov 2003. Jane was b. c. 1846, Handsworth, Worcester. In the 1881 census, John and Jane were living on Beech Rd., Yardley, Worcester, England. In the 1891 census they were living on Blake Lane, Newton Cottage, Aston, Birmingham. Children:

  2. Florence Prentice, b. 1871, Kings Norton. At home in 1881 but not in 1891..

5. Arthur Prentice, b. 1880, Birmingham, Warwick (per 1881 Birmingham census). No additional information.

6. James Prentice, b. Sep Quarter, 1869, Kings Norton. He m. 1st Florence and that may be the marrige by a James Prentice in 1890-91 shown in the St. Catharine's Index. In the 1891 census they were boarders in the home of James Jones at 178 Highgate Street, Kings Norton. He was then an "iron bedstead maker" and Florence was a "marble polisher." James m. 2nd Gertrude Turville. James worked as an iron bedstead maker. His children included:

  1. (dau.) Prentice, b. Jan 1924. She m. Mr. Guest.
    1. (son) Guest. He m. Caroline (per Caroline Guest, email, 7 Jan 2004).
