John and Charles Edgar Prentice of Scotland and Iowa
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 1999 and Revised 14 Feb 2016

The information in this article was generously provided by our various correspondents in their E-mails of 27 Sep 1999, 3 May 2000, 15 May 2000 and 11 & 13 Mar 2002, 2 Oct 2002, 5 Jun 2003, and 26 May 2004. An additional source was Edith Olmstead"s obituary posted 26 Jan 2005 on the Prentice-L and published in the Columbia Basin Herald,. Moses Lake, WA.

1. There were 2 brothers surnamed Prentice who were born in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, Scotland which lies about 10 miles SE of central Glasgow. The names of their parents are not yet known, and it is likely that there were also sisters whose names are not yet known. The brothers both emmigrated to America from Uddingston, Scotland about 1852 (Fn. 1), they were:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1822, Uddingston, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Charles Edward Prentice, b. c. 1822, Uddingston, Scotland . . . . . . [3]

Also immigrating at about that same time is Alexander Prentice of Airdrie, Scotland, which lies only about 6 miles NE of Uddingston. His kinship to John and Charles, if any, is not known.

2. John[2] Prentice, b. in 1822 in Uddingston, Scotland[1]. John immigrated to America about 1848 and died in 1870. We do not know his place of death, but it may have been Delaware Co., IA where his wife, Margaret, and some of his children are buried. John is buried in the Oak Hill Cem. near Colesburg.

He married, first, Margaret Rae, born, 1827. She died in 1860 and is buried in Oak Hill Cem., unk., Delaware, IA. Children:

  1. James C.[3] Prentice, born, May 1848, in Scotland. . . . . . . [4]
  2. Jannet Prentice. Born, 1853. Died, 1855 at the age of 2. Burial in Oak Hill Cem., unk., Delaware, IA.
  3. Jane Prentice. Born, 1856. Died, 1859 at the age of 3. Burial in Oak Hill Cem., unk., Delaware, IA.
  4. John C. Prentice, born, Dec 1857, in IA. . . . . . . [5]

He married, second, Elizabeth S. Meyers. Born, 27 Oct 1833. Died, 7 Feb 1906. The 1880 Delaware Co. IA census indicates she may have had a prior marriage to Mr. Webster and had a son by that prior marriage, Alexander P. Webster, b. c. 1860, IN. Children of John and Elizabeth:

  1. Mary Jane Prentice. Born, 9 Nov 1862, IA. . . . . . . . [6]

3. Charles Edward Prentice (Unknown, 1). Born, 1822, in Uddingston, Scotland (the 1850 census says b. NY) and d. 29 Sep 1903, Oshtemo, Kalamazoo Co., MI. The 1850 census indicates he was b. in NY, but that seems to be an error.

We don't know when he came to America, but it was likely in the period between 1848 and 1855. He may have settled in Delaware Co., IA where his brother, John (#2, above) lived.

He married Sarah Jane Uiderfield/Underfield, b. c. Feb 1830, NY, (per Michelle Setlik, email, 8 Oct 2011 and Ancestry.com Ancestry.com). She was b. c. 1830, NY, per the 1850 census in Collins, Erie Co., NY. Children:

  1. Lawton White Prentice, b. 30 Nov 1849 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [7]
  2. Curtis Prentice, b. 1851, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [7.1]

4. James C.[3] Prentice (John, 2). Born, May 1848, in Scotland[3]. Died c. 9 Jul 1931, Colesburg. Burial in Oak Hill Cem., unk, Delaware, IA.

He appears in the 1880 census in Colesburg, Delaware Co., IA, as a single man, working in a Saw Mill. He is in the 1885 IA State Census with his wife as a Lumberman in Colony, Delaware Co., IA. 1900 census in Colony, Delaware Co., IA, as a "Law Miller". He appears as a retired farmer in the 1920 census in Colony, Delaware Co., IA, and 1930 census in Coffins Grove, Delaware Co., IA, with his wife and family.

He married Laura E. Hewitt. Born, Jun 1856, in IA. Died c. 2 Jul 1931, Colesburg. Burial in Oak Hill Cem., unk., Delaware, IA. She was the daughter of Jacob Hewitt and Eliza Wright. Census: 1900, in Colesburg, Delaware, IA. Census: 1920, in Colesburg, Delaware, IA. Children:

  1. John Leroy Prentice, born, 12 May 1890, in IA. . . . . . [8]
  2. Robert Webster[4] Prentice. Robert does not appear in the 1900 census with his brother, John, so he was either deceased by 1900, or was born after 1900.

5. John C.[3] Prentice (John, 2). Born, Dec 16 1857, in IA, perhaps in Delaware Co., IA where his brother, James (#4, above), is buried. Hohn d. 27 Nov 1903, Nakokis, Buena Vista Co., IA. John appears in the 1880 census for Delaware Co., IA (living at home, unmarried) and in the 1900 census for Alta, Buena Vista Co., IA.

He married Rhoda Patridge. Born, Jan 1857, in IA. Children:

  3. Nellie Prentice. Born, Apr 1896, in IA. Census: 1900 at home; 1920, in Sioux City, Woodbury, IA.

6. Mary Jane[3] Prentice (John, 2). Born, 9 Nov 1862, IA. Died, 2 Jul 1913.

She married William Thomas Wood. Born, 25 Oct 1851. Died, 31 Jan 1914. Children:

  1. John Robert[4] Wood. He married, first, Pauline Lanphere. He married, second, Eunice (Bergold) Hennesy.

7. Lawton White Prentice (Charles Edward, 3). He was b. 30 Nov 1849 in Dutchess Co., NY, d. 2 Jan 1944, Monroe Co., WI (but Lawton's marriage license to Margaret Rattle says he was b. in Erie Co., NY, and his obit. says he was b. 11 Nov 2849, NY, per Michelle Setlik, email, 8 Oct 2011).

Victor Prentice's of email, 5 Jun 2005) says that Lawton is bur. in Vineland Cemetery, Clarkson, WA. However, Carol Prentice's email of 21 Sep 2011 says that she went to the Vineland Cemetery, talked to officials there, and learned that there is noone by that name buried in that cemetery. Lawton's obit. says he is bur. in Greenfield Cem., Tunnel City, WI, (per Michelle Setlik, email, 8 Oct 2011).

By 1876 he was living in IA (perhaps Delaware Co., where his uncle John lived) where his son, Marion, was born. [5].

He married, first, Emma Jane Keller, b. 30 Mar 1850, PA (per 1880 Delaware Co., IA census which shows her with her son, Charles, but does not show her husband, Lawton) nor apparent son, Marion. Died 11 Feb 1920, Sparta, Monroe Co., WI. See Ancestry.com for photo. Carol Prentice's email of 1 Nov 2013 says they divorced and she put their children up for adoption. Children of Lawton and Emma:

  1. Charles Edgar[4] Prentice, born, 2 Aug 1873, "Dakota." . . . . . . . [9]
  2. Marion Othello Prentice, born, 6 Nov 1876, IA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [10]

He m. 2nd Margaret/Maggie Rattle on 12 Feb 1902, Monroe Co., WI (per Michelle Setlik, email, 8 Oct 2011). She was born 1860 WI (per 1920 census for Monroe Co., WI which shows her birth place as WI). Children:

  1. David Prentice (adopted). Born, circa 1911, in WI. Census: 1920, in Unk., Monroe, WI. He may be a son of Margaret by a prior marriage.

Lawton m., 3rd, Lucy Ellen Lees (per US Marriage Index) 20 Nov 1880 in Delhi, Delaware Co., IA. Michelle Setlik has a copy of the Marriage Certific, but it was not signed and returned after the ceremony was completed. Lucy was b. 1862, IN, and was the dau. of Henry Lees and Catherine Purvis.Children (per Eugene Prentice, email, 13 Mar 2002 and 26 May 2004):

  1. Nellie Prentice, b. Jul 1881, Delaware Co., per 1900 census She may be the same person as Sarah Jane, above. She m. Allen S. Goodwin on 11 Nov 1903, Omaha, Douglas Co., NE. See "Note" below.

Note: Appearing to confirm the above children as those of Lawton and Lucy Allen Lees, Michelle Setlik's email of 2 Sep 2011 relates that she has a email from the granddaughter of Charles Prentice (born 1889 in Anita Iowa) about the Christian Children's Home stating that the Prentice children were there and surrendered by their mother Lucy Ellen Lees Prentice. Michell has also viewed the 1895 Iowa State Census showing that Fred, Nellie, Clara, and Joseph were wards of the Christian Children's Home in Council Bluffs, P:ottawattamie Co. IA. Carol Prentice's email of 1 Nov 2013 says that Charles either went to live with a neighbor or an unknown relative, and although Charles appears later in the 1900 census living with Lucy's brother Henry. Henry sent Charles to live with their sister Fannie Lees Brown in Washington State that same year.

Carol Prentice's email of 14 Sep 2011 relates that she has, but has misplaced, a letter from the Council Bluffs Children’s Home said: in 1888 Lucy E. Lees brought in her four children Joseph, Nellie, Clara and Fred Henry saying that she could not afford to keep them. . .

My husband’s grandfather Charles was born to Lawton and Lucy after she turned these children into the orphanage. He was later found to be living with his uncle Henry Lees (Lucy E. Lees brother) until he came west (Fish Trap, WA) to live with Lucy’s sister, Fanny, around 1900 or just after. I have never been able to find what happened to Lucy at that time, but Lawton went back to a former wife and adopted her son and died in Wisconsin in 1944. He is buried in Wisconsin (but see Victor Prentice's email of 5 Jun 2005 that says Lawton d. 3 Jan 1944, and is bur. in Vineland Cemetery Clarkson, WA.)

  2. Sarah Jane Prentice, aka Nellie, b. 16 Jul 1881,Ia, per Michelle Setlik, email, 1 Oct 2011. 1920 in Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN. It might be that Sarah Jane is the same person as "Nellie Prentice," below.
  3. Clara Emiline Prentice, b. 20 Apr 1883 or 1884, IA. 1902 in Omaha, NE. May have d. young.

  4. Joseph Henry/Joseph Franklin Prentice, aka Joe, b. 23 July 1886, IA, and d. 20 Feb 1967, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., IA. 1900 census in CCH, Council Bluffs. See "Note" below. He is likely the Joseph F. Prentice, age 45, single, who appears as a in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Council Bluffs census, first as a roomer in 1920 and in 1930 as a foster-son in the home of Henry and Margaret Mathews.

Lawton managed to get Marion Othello until he went back to live with his mother. Emma and Marion moved near Lawton in the early 1900s when he was married to his third wife, Maggie (Margaret) Young. They all lived in Sparta, Minnesota and all are buried there. Emma was married two other three other times and died with the last name of Jones. Neil James Prentice and his wife did not have any children (per Charlene Barnhart, email, 2 Oct 2002). Neil was an only child and did not have any siblings. (Steve and Linda Moritz, email, 5 Oct 2002) By email of 8 Feb 2003, Steve and Linda Moritz provided the following biographical sketch for Neil:

Neil attended school in Colesburg and graduated from there in 1935. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941 and proudly served his country in WW II in the 73rd Ordinance Company. He was honorably discharged in Nov. 1945 at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

Following the was, Neil worked for the McDonald-Douglas Airplane Factory in Minneapolis, MN. In the early 1950's he returned home and purchased the Shell Station He was united in marriage in 1956 to Jean (Brown) Moritz of Colesburg. They were wed in Waterloo, Iowa. With this union Neil inherited three step-children, Neil, Steve and Linda Moritz. The new family led to a change in occupation for Neil. He left the station and purchased a local plumbing/heating and hardware business. Neil continued the plumbing/heating business until he retired in 1980.

Neil was always active in his community, having been one of the oldest member of his church, one of the founders of the Lone Pine Golf and Country Club and the Golf View Apartments. He was an active member of the Colesburg Fire Department for many years and served on the City Council as well. Neil was also a long time member of the Colesburg Commercial Club. He belonged to the Masonic Order of Masons in Colesburg and an active member of the American Legion Post.

He was instrumental in organizing the Bell Committee Project of the Zion, Immanuel and First United Methodist Church, and in the building of the Bell Tower located at the church in Colesburg. Neil and several other retirees founded the F-Troop. The F-Troop donated their time and talents for many different projects in the community (they helped clean up and beautify a couple of rural cemeteries, planted trees and shrubs on the road leading in to town, helped older people with household clean-up if they needed it, etc.)

Neil and his family and friends enjoyed many wonderful times on the Mississippi River in Guttenberg. Neil actually built two residences on Able Island Guttenberg. The second cabin that he built was done at the age of 77. He also built a boat in the early 50's that he had to revamp after he married Jean to accommodate the growth of his family.

Neil always had time for anyone regardless of what he was doing for himself. One thing that stood out about him was that he always listened and then gave much thought to the matter before he would respond to a question or inquiry. He also would not give advice until unless asked for it and then it was done with much thought. He truly was a wonderful father-in-law, husband, father, grandfather, civic leader, etc and is terrible missed.

Neil married, as her 2nd husband, Jean BrownShe was b. c. 1924 and d. 27 Jan 2010, Edgewood Convalescent Home, Colesburg. She was the daughter of Earl Brown and Elsie Barton.
