South Carolina Prentices

In working with Aubrey "Buzz" Prentice is trying to identify the parents and ancestry of James Monroe Prentice who was born 14 Apr 1884 at Buffalo Valley, TN, he mentioned that family tradition has it that James came from South Carolina

In checking the South Carolina Census Records Indexes, we find the following entries for Prentices in South Carolina:

  1. 1790: Prentice, John, Charleston District, St. Phillips and St. Michaels Parish: 16 Free White Males over 16 and 2 under 16. No females.

  2. 1800: Prentice, John, Charleston Co., SC, 140, 00221-20000-00 (See Spring '98 Issue).
  3. 1800: Prentice, James, Charleston Co., SC, 104, 01010-00010-00. He is probably Dr. James Otis Prentice (173/12xv), son of Dr. Stanton Prentice.

  4. 1810: Prentice, D, Charleston Co., SC 208 Charleston.

  5. 1820: Prentice, Ann, Charleston Co., SC 73A (734?), 000000-00001
  6. 1820: Prentis, Ann, Charleston Co., SC 076, 000000-01611

  7. 1840: Prentis, E. M., CHARLESTON 067, Charleston
  8. 1840: Prentiss, W. O., COLLETON 242, St. Barthemew

  9. 1850: Prentis, Maria, CHARLESTON 084, St. Phil
  10. 1850: Prentiss, W. O., COLLETON 228, St. Barthemew
W. O. Prentiss in the 1840 and 1850 census, above, is probably William Otis Prentice (175/iv), b. 1814, son of James, above, a merchant living in Charleston, SC in 1883. He had three wives and twenty-two children. His marriages were, 1st, to Mary Sarah Jenkins 18 Nov 1834, Charleston SC; 2nd to Maria C. Jenkins (her sister) 26 Sep 1849; and 3rd to Maria T. Keith 5 Apr 1869. Children by his first wife, Mary Sarah Jenkins:
  1. Christopher Jenkins Prentiss, b. 18 Sep 1835. Had children and grandchildren.
  2. William Fripp Pentiss, b. 10 Jan 1835. Unknown if children.
  3. Otis Dunkin Prentiss, b. 28 Jan 1833. Two children.
  4. Robert J. Prentiss, b. 18 Mar 1839, d. 20 Sep 1840.
  5. Charles Brewster Prentiss, b. 27 Jan 1841. Died Jun 1864.
  6. Matilda, b. 3 Mar 1844, d. 3 Jan 1851.
  7. Mary Harriet Prentiss, b. 7 Nov 1845; m. W. S. Cannon; lived at Ellenton, SC.

Children by his 2nd wife, Maria C. Jenkins:

  1. Owen Prentiss, b. 10 Jul 1850; lawyer; m. Miss Parker of Boston. Had children, names not known. In 1883 lived in TN. See Tennessee Prentices for a possible son, Owen Prentiss.
  2. Leighton Prentiss, b. 9 Feb 1852.
  3. Catherine Jenkins, b. 30 Aug 1853; m. Herman Leiding; in 1883 lived in Charleston, SC.
  4. Maria Prentiss, b. 12 Jan 1855; m. Dr. William Rich Waring; in 1853 lived in Charleston, SC.
  5. Augustine Prentiss, b. 1 Sep 1857; Epis. clergyman; in 1883 was single and living at Rock Hill, SC.
  6. James Henry Prentiss, b. 15 Mar 1858; in 1883 lived in Chicago.
  7. Annie Prentiss, b. 1 Feb 1860; lived in Charleston, SC.
  8. Stephen Prentiss, b. 6 Mar 1862. May have lived in Chicago in 1883.
  9. Thomas Davis Prentiss, b. 9 Dec 1863; lived in FL.
  10. Helen Trenholm Prentiss, b. 4 Sep 1865; lived in Centreville, SC.
William Otis Prentiss m., 3rd, Miss Maria T. Keith on 5 Apr 1869. Children, all, except Lucy, lived in Charleston, SC:
  1. Annabella Keith Prentiss, b. 19 Oct 1870.
  2. Keith Prentiss, b. 12 ;Mar 1872.
  3. Elizabeth Prentiss, b. 21 Jan 1874.
  4. Paul Trapier Prentiss, b. 12 Apr 1875.
  5. Lucy Prentiss, b. 23 Jul 1877; d. 30 Jul 1877.

The Sacramento LDS library did not have index books for the 1860 and subsequent census information. A check of the IGI did not disclose any useful information.

Of the children of William Otis Prentice listed above, the following are interesting possibilities to be the father, or grandfather, of James Monroe Prentice who was born in 1884:

  • Christopher Jenkins Prentiss, b. 1835. If he married by 1850 and had one or more sons who married by 1883, one of those sons could be the James' father.
  • William Fripp Prentice, b. 1837. He would have the same possibilities as Christopher, above.
  • Otis Dunkin Prentiss, b. 28 Jan 1833. He died about 1872, but if his 2 children included a son, and if he married by 1858 and the son by 1883, he has the same possibilities as Christopher.
  • Owen Prentiss, b. 10 Jul 1850; lawyer and in 1883 lived in TN. His known TN residence makes him perhaps the most interesting. If he had sons born in SC, he could have brought them to TN.
  • Leighton Prentiss, b. 9 Feb 1852. He would have been 31 when James was born.
  • Augustine Prentiss, b. 1 Sep 1857; Epis. clergyman; in 1883 was single and living at Rock Hill, SC, but he might have married and had James in 1884.
  • James Henry Prentiss, b. 15 Mar 1858; in 1883 lived in Chicago, but he might have had a son and moved later to TN.
  • Stephen Prentiss, b. 6 Mar 1862. Although a tight timetable, he might have had a son in 1884 and later moved to TN.
  • Thomas Davis Prentiss, b. 9 Dec 1863; lived in FL, and although a tight timetable, he might have had a son in 1884 and moved to TN.
