Norman B. Prentiss of Troy, New York

Norman B. Prentiss of Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2008 and Revised 1 Jul 2008

Update of 1 Jul 2008: This article has now been replaced by our Fall 2008 article about Norman B. Prentiss of Troy, NY.

1. Norman B. Prentiss was probably b. c. 1800-1810. Although he first appears in the 1840 census for Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY, his birth place was not necessarily in NY. The 1840 census shows Norman with his family as follows:. The family consists of the following persons:

  • Father (Norman), b. 1800-1810.
  • Mother, b. 1790-1800.
  • Son, b. 1830-1835.
  • Dau., b. 1835-1840.

A History of Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., NY , shows Norfman as a Justice of the Peace in 1854.

He may be a brother to E. Prentice who appears on the same 1840 census page (pg. 100).

Norman Prentiss does not appear in the 1830 NY census index, suggesting he may have been born in VT, CT or MA.

However, a Norman B. Printice, b. c. 1807, NY, Shoemaker, does appear in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census (spelled Prentiss) in Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., NY with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1810, NY, and children. Norman (surname spelled Prentiss with a birth date of b. c. 1809, NY) and his family later appear in the 1860 Clifton Park census. Children per census records:

  1. Charles Prentice, b. c. 1835, NY. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1838, NY. At home in Clifton Park in the 1850 and 1860 census. Note that her age matches the daughter shown in the 1840 census

Although the birth year of the wife is different, it seems likely that the Norman shown in the 1840 census is the same person as the Norman shown in the 1850 census.

The History of Clifton Park, NY shows Norman as a Justice of the Peace in 1853 and 1863.

2. Charles Prentice, b. c. 1835, NY. At home in Clifton Park in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census. Note that his age matches the son shown in the 1840 census. In the 1860 census household of Norman and Mary is Almira Prentice, probably Charles' wife, b. c. 1838, NY, and children, probably theirs:

  1. Franklin Prentiss, b. c. 1858, NY. At home in Clifton Park in 1860. Not home in 1870.
  2. Salome Prentiss, b. c. 1859, NY. At home in Clifton Park in 1860. Not home in 1870.

Who are the Parents of Norman B. Prentiss?

The only clue we have so far is in the 1880 census which says that Norman's father was b. in MA and mother in NY.
