Joseph Prentice of Hampton, CT

Joseph Prentice of Hampton and Windham, CT
Fall 1998 and Updated 17 Nov 1998 and 23 Sep 1999

Update: 17 Nov 1998. By E-mail of 17 Nov 1998, Richard Prario has identified Joseph Prentice as born 15 Jun 1787 in Weathersfield, VT and as the son of Thomas Prentice and Mary Spencer. He is a descendant of Valentine Prentice.

Original Article:   The Barbour's Index for Connecticut shows that Joseph Prentice married Betsey A. Brewster on 23 Apr 1815 at Hampton, CT. It also shows the following children:
  • Eliza Avery Prentis, b. 3 Sep 1817, Hampton, CT. She m. James H.Dudley of Douglas, MA on 28 Sep 1836 at Hampton, CT.

  • John Brewster Prentis, b. 5 Jul 1821, Windham, Windham, CT. John m. Catherine Phelps Williams on 12 Apr 1843 at Hartford, Wethersfield, CT. She was b. c. 1822 in VT. Children (per 1850 census at Oregon, Dane Co., WI):

    • Ellen E. Prentiss, b. c. 1845, WI.

    • Charles A. Prentiss, b. c. 1848, WI. He might be the Charles E. Prentis shown in the 1870, 1880 and 1920 Vermillion, Clay Co., Dakota Territory census who was b. c. 1847 in WI. That person m. Mary F., b. c. 1853, NY. The 1920 census identifies his wife as "Belle," perhaps a second wife, who was b. c. 1857, NY. Children (per census):
      • Charles S. Prentis, b. c. 1874, Dakota. He may be the Charles E. Prentiss shown in the 1900 census in Woodbury Co., IA as b. Aug 1873, SD. That person's wife is Gertrude E., b. Nov 1876, IA. Charles and Gertrude also appear in the 1920 Spink Island, Union Co., SD census where their surname is spelled "Prentice." Children (per 1900 and 1920 census):
        • Harold E. Prentice, b. Jun 1897.
        • Walter C. Prentice, b. c. 1907.
      • Catherine B. Prentis, b. c. 1878, Dakota.

    • Mary S.(?) Prentiss, b. c. 1849, WI.
We do not know the identity of Joseph's parents (but see Update, above). He was likely born about 1790-95. The Barbour Index also contains a record for a Joseph Prentice of Hampton, "adm. fr. 1812." That may mean he was admitted as a freeman; if so that suggests he was born around 1790, and perhaps in MA.

Although only a guess at this point, Joseph may be the son of Nathaniel Prentis who appears in our PRENTICE book as 377/24. Nathaniel was born 24 Dec 1766 at New London, CT. He had a son, Joseph (377/24), b. c. 1790 who Binney says "died in Canada."

It seems likely that Joseph may have additional children, perhaps born in CT, VT, WI or Canada.
