Joel Prentice of Lincoln, MA

Joel Prentice of Lincoln, MA

By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 1997 and Revised 7 Jul 2008

Update of 7 Jul 2008: Joel Prentice is the son of Stephen Prentice and Esther Cutter who are #16 in our Henry Prentice eBook. That ebook now replaces this article.

1. Joel Prentice was b. before 1795 in the 1820 census and between 1790-1800 in the 1930 census. Combining the 2 census records, he would have been b. c. 1790-1795. The 1880 census record for his son, Nathan, indicates that Joel was b. in VT. Joel does not appear in 1840 and later census records.

Lincoln is about 5 miles SE of Concord. Joel was admitted to Lincoln Church on 5 Feb 1832. Joel was a very tall, strong man, the largest in Lincoln. He may have come from Princeton and his wife from Concord. It was reported by a Mr. Rice, a hotel keeper in Lincoln, that Joel Prentice died in Illinois in August, 1839.

He married Harriet. Her maiden name may have been Watson, the middle names of two of her children. She was also admitted to that church 2 years earlier in 1830. The dates of birth of his children are not known but was before 1832 when all were baptized on the same date. Children:

  1. John Watson Prentice, bapt. Lincoln Church on 5 Feb 1832. He was a whalebone worker in Boston; his house was at the rear of 58 Tayler Street in 1850.
  2. Nathan Jones Prentice, b. c. 1823, MA (per 1850 census) and bapt. Lincoln Church on 5 Feb 1832. He had a grain store in Boston in 1849 and appears in the 1850 Boston census as a Trader, with his wife, Hannah, b. c. 1827, ME. He later appears in the 1870 and 1880 Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA census with his children:
    1. Charles M. Prentice, b. c. 1850, ME. At home in Cambridge in 1870 census.
    2. John H. Prentice, b. c. 1852, MA. At home in Cambridge in 1870 census.
    3. Hattie E. Prentiss, b. c. 1860, ME. At home in Cambridge in 1870 and 1880 census.
    4. Susan F./H. Prentiss, b. c. 1857, MA. At home in Cambridge in 1870 and 1880 census.
  3. Sarah Watson Prentice, b. between 1825 and 1830 (per 1830 census) and bapt. Lincoln Church on 5 Feb 1832.

Notes:

1. Binney's 1883 edition says this is not the same Joel Prentiss shown on pg. 77, #93.

2. Clues suggesting he might be the Joel Prentice shown on pg. 287, #91 are (a) he named his son John Watson, the full name of Valentine Prentice's widow's second husband, John Watson (see pg. 256), and (b) the middle name of his son, Nathan, is Jones which was the maiden surname of the wife of John-3 (see pg. 259).

3. It is unknown if he is related to Henry Prentiss of Princeton, shown on pg. 60, #61.
