Pierce Prentice

Pierce Prentice of Washington Co., NY

By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 1997 and Revised 8 Dec 2005

Update of 14 Jun 2009: This article has now been replaced by our Fall 2009 article of the same name.

1. Pierce Prentice, b. c. 1774-1780 at an unknown location, appears on page 351 of the 1800 Cambridge, Washington Co., NY census. He and his wife are under 26 years of age (born after 1774) with a:

  1. (son) Prentice, b. c. 1790-1800.
  2. (daughter) Prentice, b. c. 1790-1800

No other Prentice family is shown in Cambridge,Washington Co., NY in the 1800 census.

He is perhaps too young to be a son of the Reuben Prentis who also appears in the 1800 Washington Co., NY census, but he might be a brother. (See article on Reuben Prentis.)

Pierce might also be a brother to Zelotus Prentice who appears in the 1810 Washington Co., NY census for whom no parents have been identified. (See article on Zeloties/Zelotus Prentice.)

Bill Semeyn has suggested, because of some phonetic similarity, that Pierce Prentice may be the same person as Perez Prentice who appears on pg. 459 of the new, 1997 3rd Ed. of our Prentice book (Binney's 1883, Ed., pg. 335). According to Binney, Perez was born in 1773. However, an 1840 census shows Perez's birth date as being between 1750-60.
