He is living at his adoptive parents' home in the 1891 census. For a time after his 1908 marriage, they lived in Mission City, BC. They then lived for a time in Santa Barbara, CA, and were there during the 1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake . In later life, he lived 3888 Cumberland Rd., Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. For may years in Victoria he painted murals in hotels, restaurents, theaters, etc. per Cherie Nott's email of 29 Jun 2011.

He m. Emma Cattling on 27 June 1908 at Mission City, British Columbia, Canada. Emma Cattling was b. 1889, Chadwell, Essex (per Pat Done, email, 22 Nov 2004) and d. c. 1988. Pat Done also adds the following information in her email of 8 Nov 2004:

Ernest is supposed to be the son of Alfred and Emma nee Burchell but she would have been over 50 when he was born. The 1901 census lists the three of them living in Grays. The family were heavily into the Primitive Methodist Church from about the late 1840s which is when the Prentice/Prentis name stops being recorded in the Church of England registers. The only surviving records for the Grays Primitive Methodist Church start in the 1880s which is too late for the 1859 Ernest's brother, William, but not for Ernest.

The emigration to Canada was in 1908. Alfred died in 1904 and Emma decided to go to Canada. Neither the Grays nor the Canadian branches now know why she wanted to go. Ernest Henry, William and Sarah Cattling travelled with her. Emma wanted my great grandparents Alfred John William and Alice Henrietta to go too but they didn't want to leave the rest of the family and so stayed in Grays. My grandmother although only a young girl at the time, was living away in service and only knew that her parents weren't interested in leaving England.

Who are Joseph Prentice's Parents?

One of his grandchildren was given the name "Golden Prentice" which suggests he may be a descendant of the men named Golden or Golding Prentice. One of the daughters of a Golden and Susannah Prentice of South Benfleet, Maud Prentice, b. 1879, went to live in Grays Thurrock about 1899/1900. She lived at 81 The High Street, Grays which is where Pat Done's Prentices were living at the time.

In our PRENTICE NEWSLETTER, we have two articles in our PRENTICE NEWSLETTER involving men named Golden Prentice:

So far we have been unable to connect either of those lines to Joseph Prentice.
