His Kiowa father was killed before he was born, so he was raised around his mother's Cheyenne family in central Oklahoma.

He has about a 1/16th inheritance from the white Colonel William Bent who established Bent's Fort down out of the mountains on the upper Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado to trade with the Cheyenne and other ribes. Burgess is descended from Yellow Woman, one of Bent's wives.

Burgess started drawing Touche Turtle from TV at about age 9 and has drawn ever since winning many awards including an unused scholarship to IAIA. He is self taught usually drawing from his own mind and memory. He almost always draws Native American subjects. His line work is very precise and finished. His drawings are always exactly centered on the paper.
