1. Frederick Prentice was b. c. 1864 in England, as were his parents per the 1900 census where he appears in Riverside, Bergan Co., New Jersey. He emigrated in 1880 (per 1900 census) or 1883 (per 1920 census). In the 1920 census in Manhattan, New York Co., NY, he is called W. Frederick Prentis. We know he is the same person because his daughter, Vera, is still living at home.

The 1900 census has seemingly inconsistent entries. Frederick is called a "B-in law" (Brother-in-law?), seemingly making Elizabeth Watts (wife of Arthur Watts) his sister. However, the census record says that both of Elizabeth's parents were born in Scotland, not England as shown for Frederick's parents.

It might be that Frederick is married to Arthur's sister, which would make Frederick and Arthur brothers-in-law.

Another possibility, less likely, is that Arthur Watts has a former wife, perhaps deceased, who was Frederick's sister. In that situation Frederick could still be caled Arthur's brother-in-law.

In any event, in 1900 Frederick is living with Arthur Watts, (b. Jun 1865, both parents b. in England, and emigrated in 1890) and his wife, Elizabeth.

Frederick is shown in the 1900 census as married, but his wife is not shown in the household. He is probably the Fred Prentice shown in 1910 Manhattan census as widowed with no children living with him. In the 1920 census he is called W Frederick Prentis, a widower (There are shown 2 children) He is likely the Frederick Prentice, b. c. 1861, England, a widower, living in Hackensack,Bergen Co., NY, and the Frederick W. Prentice, b. c. 1861, England, a widower, living in River Edge, Gergen Co., NJ. Children:

Who are Frederick (W.?) Prentice's Parents?

For now, we can only say who are not his parents: He is not the Frederick Prentice, son of Joseph Prentice and Catherine Ellen Noone in our Fall 2000 article about James Prentice of Halstead, England.
