  5. The 1910 Auburn census, incorrectly, says he was b. in CT, as were his parents.
  6. Bernie Corcoran's email of 12 Nov 2016, enclosing Dewitt's obituary, relates that he was b, in Long Island NY on June 14, 1850 and moved from Fleming, NY, to Auburn NY about 1888. It reads as follows:

      Dewitt C. Prentice Dead. Dewitt C. Prentice, age 67, passed away at his home, No 53 Fitch Avenue yesterday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock after an illness of a week. For several years he had suffered with heart trouble and this was given as cause if the death. Mr. Prentice was born in Long Island June 14 1850 and for the past 30 years has resided in this city. When first coming to this city, he conducted a second hand store and in later years has run a junk business at No. 32 Clark Street.

      Besides his wife, Ethel, he leaves two sons, Adelbert and Ralph Prentice, both of this city. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the late home at 3 o'clock. Rev. Curtis C. Roszell, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate and burial will be in Fort Hill Cemetery.

The 1883 Auburn City Directory shows him at 36 Lansing 5 as a Laborer.

The 1888 Auburn City Directory shows him at 32 Maple as a Tin Peddler.

The 1892 census in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY, shows him as a Merchant with his wife, Lucy, b. c. 1852, U.S. She d. 23 Oct 1899, Auburn, age 47. In 1900 Dewitt is shown as a widower. Bur Fort Hill Cem., Auburn, NY; see Fort Hill Cem. Interment Roster . <

The 1903 Auburn City Directory shows him at 43 Seward Ave. as a Junk Dealer.. p>Dewitt m. 1st Lucy sometime between 1880 and her death on 23 Oct 1899. Although it seems likely that they had 1 or more children in that 19 year period, none is yet known and none is mentioned in his Will (per email of Bernie Corcoran, 13 Nov 2016).

Dewitt m. 2nd Ethel M. Parish, c. 1902 per the 1910 census which indicates DeWtt and Ethel had been married 8 years. She was b. Nov 1874, Auburn, NY, and d. c. 1953, Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. Bur Fort Hill Cem., Auburn, NY; see Fort Hill Cem. Interment Roster .

Ethel had a prior marriage to Howard Case. by whom she had a son, Adelbert Rowland Case. 1940 living with her son, Ralph. Living with them in the 1910 Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY, census was her widowed father, Rowland Parish, b. c. 1833, NY; his wife had been Mary/Polly Ward (1834-1891); An Ancestor Chart for Mary/Polly can be found at Ancestry.com . Ethel's obituary reads as follows:

    Mrs. Ethel Parish Prentice, 78, widow of DeWitt Prentice of 53 Fitch Ave., died last evening in Mercy Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Auburn and worked is a finisher at the Columbia Rope Co. for 23 years, starting in 1911.

    Surviving her are two sons, Adelbert R. [Case] Prentice and Ralph E. Prentice of Aurora; two grandchildren, Mrs. Sarah (Hoeinkern?) and Fred L. Prentice, both of Auburn; two grandchildren.

    Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the home. The Rev. Grant S. Miller of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will be at Fort Hill Obituary. Friends may call at the home tonight, Saturday and Sunday at their convenience.

The 1910 census incorrectly identifies both of Ethel's sons, Adelbert and Ralph, as sons of DeWitt and gives the sons the surname "Prentice."

He m. Ruth, b. 25 Jan 1896, NY, and d. there Apr 1987 per the SSDI. Her obituary reads as follows:

    Ruth Rice Prentice, 91, of 31 Wood St. died Wednesday at Auburn Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Prentice was born in Cato and lived in Auburn all of her adult life. She was a member of the United Church of Auburn.

    Surviving are a son, Fred L. of Auburn; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

    Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Brew Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd E. Putney officiating. Burial will be in Throopsville Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 48 South St.

Note: Adelbert and his children and grandson should properly be surnamed "Case" unless they had been formally adopted by DeWitt Prentice. An exception would be that, as a matter of law, any person is entitled to use whatever surname they want unless it is for the purpose of fraud.

    Fred L. Prentice Sr., 71, of 8 Hoffman St. died Sunday at Auburn Memorial Hospital.

    Mr. Prentice was a life resident of Auburn. He was an engineer specialist in the 333rd Division of the Army during World War II. He was employed by Alco Products for 26 years before his retirement in 1987.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Oliver; four sons, Fred L. Jr., Thomas F., Mark T. and Gregg G.; two daughters, Sharon E. Powers and Deborah A. Lounsbury; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brew Funeral Home, the Rev. Leon Oaks-Lee officiating. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, 48 South St. Contributions may be made to a charity.

Who are Homer Prentice's Parents?

Homer Prentice might be the son of William H. Prentiss who in 1860 was living in Oyster Bay, Queens Co., Long Island. Oyster Bay is on the N coast of Long Island, about 20 miles NE of Patchogue which lies on the S coast of Long Island.
