By and large it is reasonably accurate, but its accuracy rests on many factors, including legibility of handwriting, memory and research skills. We make no claim that our articles are without error and have always immediately corrected errors brought to our attention.

We received an email which says that the lineage set out below contains perceived errors but did not identify them so we are unable determine what corrections, if any, are needed. 7.5 James Prentice was b. Nov 1859 in Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland (per IGI) and d. 16 Nov 1942. He and his wife are bur. in the Junction City Cemetery, Kimble Co., TX.

James was the second son in a family of eight children who lived to adulthood. As the second son, he was not entitled to inherit the family's lands or home. He chose to pursue architecture and received his architecture degree from The University of Edinburgh. After graduation he designed several buildings standing in Edinburgh, including a large, stone Presbyterian church.

James was a first cousin of James and Rita Cooper of London and Bexhill on Sea in Sussex.

At the age of 24 in about 1883, James immigrated to The United States (Texas) after giving some consideration to immigrating to Australia. He worked on the George Brown Ranch at Cathedral Mountain near Alpine in West Texas for several years, learning the ranching business and determining that this was the career he wanted. At the age of 27, he bought land near Junction, TX, and named it The Bois d'Arc Ranch after the Bois d'Arc trees growing along the river crossing through the ranch. His obituary reads as follows:

James Prentice was born in Kilsyth, Scotland, November 15, 1859, being 83 years and one day old at the time of his death. He attended schools at the George Watson School for Boys, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was also a graduate of the engineering school of the University of Edinburgh. After his graduation from the University, he spent two years in that profession in Cardiff, Wales.

In 1883 he came to Texas settling first at Seguin, but in 1889 he moved to Kimble County and settled on his ranch where he has lived for 53 years. He was married to Miss Maud Davey in Kerrville on October 4, 1898, and to this union two children were born, Mrs. G. A. Whiting, San Antonio, and Seaton Prentice, Junction. His widow and two children survive, and he is also survived by two grandchildren, Gus and Frances Whiting, San Antonio; one brother, Alexander Prentice, Edinburgh, Scotland, and one sister, Mrs. John Cooper, London, England.

James Prentice made a thorough study of the ranching industry and was recognized as one of Kimble County's most successful ranchmen. For several years he has not been active, leaving the management of the ranch to his son, Seaton Prentice.

When a young man Mr. Prentice united with the Presbyterian Church in Scotland. He has lived an exemplary life in his community and at all times his actions, his thoughts, and his words were clean. In his homegoing, Kimble County has lost a man of sterling character.

Another obituary described in John Casall's email of 14 Jul 2010 as found in the scrapbook belonging to the late Margaret Friffen Harrison, Junction, TX, reads as follows:

In the death of James Prentice in San Antonio November 16, 1942, Kimble County has lost one of her most outstanding pioneer ranchmen. Mr. Prentice had not been well for some time and had been making trips to San Antonio for treatment. He grew worse a few days before his death. The Schreiner-Hodges Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Funeral services were held at the Schreiner-Hodges Chapel, Rev. Paul VanDyke, pastor of the Kerrville Presbyterian Church, officiating. Inter- ment was made in the Junction Cemetery.

The following served as active pall bearers: E. G. Hill, Clay Secrest, C. W. Atchison, Fred Mudge, Millard Bennett, Harold Schweining, J. S. Farmer, and Walker Ragsdale.

He m. Maude Davey, b. 9 Sep 1872 in TX and d. 6 Sep 1947. They appear in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Kimble Co., TX census. They were a very proper and elegant couple who lived graciously on their ranch and traveled into San Antonio as needed. He dressed in his three piece navy pin stripe suit daily and read his copies of The New York Times which came by Pony Express in large leather satchels bearing his name plates. A full Scottish tea was served every afternoon.

James and Maud Prentice visited his family in England and Scotland and their families visited them in San Antonio and at the ranch. Her obituary reads as follows (per Wendy Simpson, email, 12 Dec 2005):

Funeral Rites For Mrs. James Prentice Are Held Sunday

Funeral services for Mrs. James A. Prentice, 74, who died in San Antonio Saturday morning, were held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock from the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stanley Hauser of Sonora, Episcopal minister, officiating. The Hodges Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the Junction cemetery.

A bride of the "gay nineties", Mrs. Prentice moved to Kimble, where she had spent part of her childhood, after her marriage in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Davey, in Kerrville on October 4, 1898. She and her husband owned and operated extensive ranch holdings on North Llano and built up one of the first herds of registered Angora goats in the Hill Country.

Among the early residents of the county, Mrs. Prentice, who was born in Salado, in Bell County, on Sept. 9, 1872, came to Kimble in 1882 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Davey, and five years later moved to Kerr County. The Davey family lived on Bear Creek in a house which wa later replaced "Brambletye" and the children of school age attended the Bear Creek school.

Mrs. Prentice, nee Maude E. Davey, divided her time between the ranch, now operated by her son, Junction and San Antonio since the death of her husband almost 5 years ago. She had been in failing health for several years and was ill in San Antonio several months before her death.

Survivors include the son, Seaton, one daughter, Mrs. G. A. Witting, and one grandson, G. A. Witting, Jr., both of San Antonio, one granddaughter, Mrs. Richard Bullock, of Wenatchie, Washington; and three sisters, Mrs. Robert Knox of Uvalde, Mrs. Felix Watson and Miss Myrtle Davey.

Pall bearers were W. M. Carrico of San Antonio and Vann Martin, J. M. Livingston, Fred Mudge, Sayers Farmer, Clay Secrest, James P. Rieck, and Bill Hamer.

By email of 12 Dec 2005, Wendy Simpson advises that Maude had 3 younger syblings: Myrtle Dorcas Davey; Mabel Grace Davey; and May Davey, and that Maude's parents were Benjamin Abraham Davey ( born 1846 in ENGLAND)) and Martha Merinda Billingsley, born October 07, 1852 in Bell, Wilson Co. Texas. Mr. Davey died in 1942 and Mrs. Davey died June 24, 1924., both dying in Kerr Co. Texas.

WW I military death records shoe him as a Private, Royal Fusiliers, 2nd Bn., who d. at age 21 on 9 Oct 1917, son of Duncan and Annie Prentice, of 37 Whitehall Place, Aberdeen. His memorial is found on Panel 28 to 30 and 162 to 162A and 163A, Tyne Cot Memorial. A Google search discloses the following information:

Location: Belgium: The Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetary, which is located 9 kilometres north east of leper town centre, on the Tynecotstraat, a road leading from Zonnebeekeweg (N332). The names of those from the United Kingdom units are inscribed on panels arranged by Regiment under their respective ranks. The names of those from New Zealand units are inscribed on panels within the New Zealand Apse located at the centre of the Memorial.

Historical Information: The Tyne Cot Memorial is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawel and a shortening of the line defence.

There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by the Commonwealth Forces to divert German attention from the weakened French front futher south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites.

At the time of John’s birth, his father, David Prentice, was an iron miner. John emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand, probably aboard the ship "Canterbury" which left Glasgow on 12 Sep 1878 and arrived in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand on 10 Dec 1878. He was then 20 years old and listed in the passenger records as a "farm labourer" from "Lanarkshire". In 1882 he was a Coal Miner. In 1888 he was a Gold Miner.

John Prentice married Helen "Ellen?" Howieson in Dunedin, New Zealand, on 28 Dec 1882. She was born in 1860 in the parish of Whitburn and d. 8 At the time of his marriage John was a 24 year old gold miner. There had been a gold rush at Gabriel’s Gully, near the small Central Otago town of Lawrence where John and Ellen Prentice were at that time living. However, the gold boom had peaked some years earlier so it is not believed that John met with much success.

By 1886 the couple had moved further up the South Island to the West Coast. John now earned his living as a coal miner and in his time held other positions of responsibility with the Westport Coal Company that operated the mine and may have been mine manager. They lived atop a rocky outcrop 2000 metres above sea level in a shanty town called Denniston that was often shrouded in heavy mists, buffeted by high winds and covered in snow for weeks on end in winter.

John Prentice died, tragically on 23 Jun 1898, aged just 40 years in Nelson. He had been removed there to hospital from Denniston. He is buried in Nelson. Ellen, his widow, returned with her three New Zealand-born young children to Scotland. There, Ellen married a Mr. Hamilton.

. . .after James' death in 1879, his wife, Isabella Caldwell, lived in the same household (servant) as David Inglis, b. 1850. They had 4 children together, illigitmate, as stated on their birth certificates.

Iabella Caldwell states on certificates of birth, for the last 4 children, that she is a widow of James Prentice, Farm Servant, who died 22 d June 1879. So- the blood line for David Stewart, Robert Prentice, Jeanie and Isabella Prentice are actually Inglis and Caldwell, not Prentice. In the 1901 Scotland Census, Isabella Caldwell uses the surname Prentice for herself and her children. David Inglis is no longer with them.

Children of Isabella and David Inglis:

She sailed with her 2 children James b.1908 and Marion "Minnie" b.1904 Scotland, on the same ship as her brother in law, Robert (per Pat Rocha, email, 10 Aug 2008).

The US 1910 census taken in April has David Stewart "boarding" in Manhattan Ward 22, New York, NY. There is also a David Stewart on the Columbia passenger list who arrived in the USA, 31 Jan 1910.

She was the dau. of Charles Watson Frame (1854-1939) and Agnes Hamilton (1858-1942) and was a Domestic Servant.

At the time of his marriage in 1911, David was a blacksmith, 21 years of age, and lived at Stane, Shotts. In 1912, after the birth of his daughter, Agnes, David and his family returned to the coal mining town of Denniston in New Zealand where he worked as a blacksmith on the world famous Denniston railway incline renowned as a great engineering feat due to the steepness of the gradient of the hillside from which the coal was extracted and the operation of the coal bins sent down the rails to the port of Westport for despatch by ship.

From Denniston, the family moved to New Zealand's North Island and settled in a town north of Wellington called Petone, about 1922. Robert Prentice married Isabelle Henderson Baird who was b. c. 1894 in Easton, Fresno Co., CA. She appears with her parents in the 1900 census in Twp. 3, Tuolumne Co., CA.

Isabelle''s parents were John Baird (b. 1846 Scotland) and Barbara Ramage (b. 1857 Scotland).. John Baird came to San Francisco, Calif. USA in 1868 with his brother Dougal. John returned to Scotland in 1874 and married Barbara Ramage. After their son Dougal Baird was born they returned to the US in 1876. They settled in Virginia City, Nev.

Pat Rocha's email of 10 Aug 2008 relates that Barbara's brother James Ramage played on the Sierra Baseball League, Division of the Giants. The Prentice and Baird families have common relatives, Ramage. Pat has a wonderful picture of Robert and a work crew in front of a giant redwood where a very large hole is being chipped/cut out.

Robert Prentice and his family later settled in Oakland, Alameda Co., (where they first appear in the 1930 census) and Watsonville, CA. Children of Robert and Isabelle:

She is probably the Isabell R; Rocha shown in the SSDI as b. 2 Sep 1920 and d. 10 Jun 2003 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., CA. She m. George Rocha. He may be the George Rocha who appears in the SSDI as b. 11 Aug 1915 and d. 24 Aug 2004 in Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., CA.

Who are Thomas Prentice's Parents?

We do not know for sure yet, but since Thomas was likely born between 1720 and 1728, and probably in Lanarkshire, we find the following possibilities shown in the IGI:

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. 18 Nov 1722 at Carluke, Son of Archibald and Mary Prentice.

  2. Thomas Prentice, b. 10 Sep 1724 at Carluke, son of John Prentice who m. Marion Whytlaw on 20 Jul 1720 at Carluke. Son may be the John Prentice, chr. 13 Jul 1800 at Carluke, son of Archibald Prentice and Jean McNaught.

  3. Thomas Prentice, b. 24 Jan 1726 at Carluke, son of Alexander Prentice and Margaret Russell.

Footnote 1: A word of caution: Sadie Hutchinson advises that she is "not 100% certain that [thomas had a son named Adam) OPR#3153221 shows a child baptised on the 4/11/1755 to Thomas & Jane but the page is damaged and we could not be certain of the christian name, but if you check the rest of their children we think there is a more than good possibility that this is Adam."

Footnote 2: A word of caution: Sadie Hutchinson advises that in Carnwath Churchyard there is a headstone for a Margaret Prentice, born 31 Jan 1780, daughter of Adam Prentice and Margaret Brocket of Carnwath. She further advises she is making an assumption that this Margaret is the same person as the Margaret who is #3 below and for whom Sadie has no specific birth date, although she was likely born in the time period of about 1780 to 1787.

There are, however, other possible parents for Margaret, #3 above, according to the records of the Glasgow Records Office:

1.	She may be the Margaret Prentice chr. 27 Jul 1778, daughter of
James Prentice and Margaret Meikle. They are known to have
had the following children, all christened at Carnwath:
	a. Margaret Prentice, chr. 27 Jun 1778.
	b. Archibald Prentice, chr. 28 Apr 1782.
	c. David Prentice, chr. 27 Jul 1784.
	d. William Prentice, chr. 27 Jul 1784.
	e. Mary Prentice, chr. 26 Mar 1786.
	f. Christian Prentice, chr. 19 Jan 1790.
	g. Peter Prentice, chr. 19 Jan 1790.

2.	She may be the Margaret Prentice chr. 27 Jun 1784, daughter of
David Prentice and Agnes Somerville. They are known to have
had the following children, all christened at Carnwath:
	a. Thomas Prentice, chr. 13 Oct 1782.
	b. Margaret Prentice, chr. 27 Jun 1784.
	c. Janet Prentice, chr. 3 Jul 1786.
	d. John Prentice, chr. 26 Aug 1788.
	e. Jean Prentice, chr. 14 Mar 1790.
	f. John Prentice, chr. 6 Jan 1793.

3.	She may be the Margaret Prentice chr. 21 Feb 1790 daughter of
Henry Prentice and Jean Nimmo of Carnwath. However, that
Margaret would have been only 13-14 when Margaret m. James
	Mann about 1803-1804.

Footnote 3:   Jacqueline Gibson's email of 8 Jul 2001 provides the following additional information:

Agnes was born abt 1806 in Appin, she married Thomas PRENTICE in Lesmahagow 31/5/1832 and the banns were also read in her parish of Avondale. She lived in Lanarkshire up to 1881 and eventually died in Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire in 1889.

Her parents on her death certificate were given as Duncan McCOLL, Night watchman (deceased) - Dorothy McCOLL, MS McCOLL (deceased). Jacqueline found their marrige in Lisemore 4 Dec 1803 and the 1861 census for Glasgow.

Duncan McCOLL, Policeman Widower of Dorothy McCOLL died 4 Aug 1862 at 105 High Street Glasgow, age 81. He was the son of Solomon McCOLL, Farmer (deceased) and Catherine McInnes.

Dorothy McCOLL d. 12 Dec 1861, 105 High Street Glasgow. Daughter of Hugh McCOLL, Farmer.

Footnote 5:   Rick Prentice's email of 13 May 2000 has provided us with a line of Prentice descent, prepared by Wayne Neilson, purporting to be from Thomas Prentice, #1 above, through his son, John, #2 above, and grandson, Daniel. We have been unable to verify that his John is the same person as #2. Accordingly, we have created a new article for our Summer 2003 issue about Daniel Prentice of Carnwath and Lesmahagow

Hi I would like to make a correction to James Hewitson Prentice wedding date. It is in fact 1899, this puts their birthdates to 1866 not 1862. In addition his wedding certificate states he was a widower when he married Jessie. But I cannot find this first wedding any where. Regards Jackie Prentice
