1. John Prentice may have been b. c. 1702, Cair, Carluke, Scotland (per Amanda, email, 14 Aug 2005). His father might be James Prentice who is mentioned at the top of our Winter 2004 article entitled John Prentice of Carluke, Scotland .
He m. Marion Hastie on 19 Jun 1726, Gair. She was b. c. 1704, Carluke and d. 9 Mar 1751, Carluke. Dau. of Arch and Helen Hastie. Children per IGI:

- Thomas Prentice, b. 7 Jun 1728, Carluke. He m. Janet Girdwood. They had 1 or more children,

40. David Prentice, perhaps b. in or near Dalziel where his son, Alexander, was born. Chr. 31 Jul 1779, Cambusnethan. David was a hand loom weaver per Christine Hadden, 28 Dec 2017.
He m. Janet Lightbody on 13 Jul 1800 at Dalziel which lies just below Motherwell, about 5 miles southeast of Old Monkland. It lies only a mile or two from Cambusnethan.

50. James Weir b. 1770, Shotts. James was a vitner and innkeeper of the Shotts Inn.
60. Alexander Prentice, chr. 6 Dec 1807, Dalziel (now Motherwell), Lanarkshire, Scotland. and died on 1 March 1877 at #3 Lowpatrick Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He appears in the 1851 census living at 80 Townhead St., Hamilton, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family where he was a "Carter and Grocer." In the 1871 Hamilton census he was living at 78 Townhead Street and was a "Grocer and Spiurit Retailer."

60.8 John Prentice, b. 7 Dec 1855, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotlandand d. 1938 in Cape Town, South Africa. At home there in 1861 and 1871. He may be the John Prentice appearing in the 1891 census in Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1855, Hamilton, an unmarried Boarder, occupation: Carter. He later appears in the 1901 census in Hamilton as an unmarried Boarder and Carter. 1915 living in Cape Town, South Africa
He m. Minnie Eliza Smithen in East London, South Africa. She was b. 13 Feb 1864 at an unknown location, and d. c. 1962 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at
Ancestry.com . Her father, John Pennington Smithen, was b. 8 Mar 1836(?) in Wells, Norfolk, England, and d. 16 May 1892 in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Minnie's younger sister, Edith, was b. 2 years after Minnie in Stanley, Falkland Islands.

He m. Christina Gilchrist. They appear in the 1881 and 1901 Greenock West census. Children:
80. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1843, Hamilton. At home there in 1851 and 1871. He appears in the 1871 census in Glasgow Springburn, Lanarkshire, as a Joinder living at 26 Dunchattan Street with his wife and family. 1891 census and 1901 census in Hamilton living at 24 Hope Street.
