Nathan and Henry Prentice of CT and Burlington, NY

Nathaniel and Henry Prentice of Burlington, NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2007 and Revised 20 Aug 2016

We have been aiding Charles F. Prentice of Montrose, PA, and Becke Dawson in their efforts to identify their Prentice roots. This article combines information contained in our earlier articles about Nathan and Henry Prentice entitled

  1. Nathaniel and Henry Prentice of Burlington, NY ,
  2. Nathan Prentice of Nauvoo, IL ,
  3. Frederick R. Prentice of Hancock Co., IL .

Here is what we have so far:

1. (unknown) Prentice. His date and place of birth is presently unknown, but probably was in CT and approximately 1755-1765 based on the 1787 birth dates of Nathan and Henry. For several years I've been helping Charles Francis Prenticeof Montrose, PA in trying to trace his PRENTICE line which, Charles says, have their roots in the vicinity of Preston, CT. The name of the father is not yet known, but may have been b. c. 1740-1765. Charles relates that his widowed distant great grandmother moved to Burlington, NY supposedly with twin sons, HENRY PRENTICE and HENRY'S brother, NATHAN or NATHANIEL PRENTICE.

The name of his wife, and her date and place of birth is presently unknown, but probably was in CT and approximately 1755-1765 based on the 1787 birth dates of her sons, Nathan and Henry, below.

It is Charles Francis Prentice's family oral history that their widowed mother (name unknown) moved from the Preston-Plainfield area of CT to Burlington Flats, Otsego County, NY. We do not know when she moved to Burlington Flats, other than it was some date between 1787, when her sons were born, and 1820, when the sons appear in the Burlington census. Why did she move to Burlington Flats? Perhaps to join one or more family members or kin who had moved there earlier.

She does not appear as the head of a household in the 1790, 1800, 1810 or 1820 census. During those census years, only the name of the head of the household was listed, so it seems likely that she either was a member of another household or remarried to a different surname since a Prentice female of sufficient age (55-65) to be her does not appear. She does not appear in the households of her sons, Nathan and Henry and either was deceased by 1820 or living in another household.

Children of widowed mother per Charles Francis Prentice:

  1. Nathan Prentice, b. in or near Preston, CT in 1787. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Henry Prentice, b. in or near Preston, CT in 1787. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

2. Nathan Prentice, perhaps twin, b. in or near Preston, CT in 1787 and d. 22 Apr 1872 in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., IL.

Note: The Barbour Index does not show a 1787 entry for a Nathan Prentice. It does show an 18 Dec 1787 entry for an unnamed "Prentice," son of Thomas Prentice of Stonington who m. Anna Downer of Preston on 19 Apr 1787. An entry on that same page, 4/67, says that child d. 23 Feb, but fails to give the year of death. Stonington lies on the coast about 20 mile SSE of Preston.

Nathan was living with his son, Luke, in the 1870 Nauvoo census at age 82. Becke Dawson's email of 10 May 2007 provides the following additional information from the biography of Nathan's son, Luke Prentice, contained in the 'History of Hancock County', 1880 Gregg's:

"Luke P. Prentice, retired farmer, was born in Otsego county, N.Y., in 1817, and is a son of Nathan and Eliza Briggs, natives of New York and Connecticut, who emigrated to Illinois in 1836 and settled in McDonough county, where they resided until 1846, when he moved to this [Hancock] county and settled in Nauvoo, where they both died. He was an early settler of both counties, and residing on the main road for many years, was widely known and highly esteemed by all who knew him."

Nathan is probably the same person as the Nathan Prentiss who appears in the 1820 census in Burlington, Otsego Co., NY, age 26-45 (b. c. 1775-1794). with a wife, age 26-45 (b. c. 1775-94) and children:

    1. Son Prentiss, age 10-16 and b. 1804-1810. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4] Nathan Prentice
    2. Son Prentiss, age 0-9 and b. c. 1811-1820.
    3. Son Prentiss, age 0-9 and b. c. 1811-1820.

Subject to verification, Nathan is likely the Nathan who later appears in the 1830 census in New Lisbon, Otsego Co., NY, which lies about 10 miles SSW of Burlington, age 40-50 (b. c. 1780-90) with his apparent wife, age 30-40 (b. c 1790-1800) and children:

    1. Son Prentiss, age 10-15 and b. 1815-20. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5] Frederick Roy Prentice
    2. Son Prentiss, age 15-20 and b. c. 1810-15
    3. Dau. Prentiss, age 10-15 and b. c. 1815-20.c. 1811-1820.

Nathan m. Elizabeth Briggs, b. c. 1791, NY and d. 1864, Nauvoo. Elizabeth was the sister of Loton/Lotan Briggs who m. Touradocta/Touradocia Pope whose daughter, Sarah Mariah Briggs . Dann Nathan Travis Prentice (#9, below)

Children per 1850 Nauvoo census and Becke Dawson, email, 12 May 2007):

    1. Luke Perkins Prentice, b. Oct 1817, NY, his wife, Christianna, and daughter, Lucia. . . . . . . . [2a]
    2. Mary E. Prentice, b. NY. By email of 12 May 2007, Becke Dawson reports:

"Mary E., born NY. . . married Adam Swartz Dec 26, 1844 in McDonough County, Illinois. In [her brother} Luke's obit it states 'He is the last surviving member of his family, his sister, Mrs. Mary Swartz, and a brother having proceeded him to the promised land.' Adam was born in Adams County, PA, in 1814 and was a son of Adam Swartz - was left an orphan at age 8. This according to his bio. He was married [prior] to marrying Mary Prentice, his 1st wife having died.

By email of 9 May 2007, Becke Dawson reports that Nauvoo's County Seat, Carthage, IL, show that Elizabeth was b. 22 Jan 1791 in Otsego Co., NY, and d. 16 Aug 1864 in Nauvoo. Elizabeth was the daughter of Perez Briggs (b. 7 Sep 1746 Voluntown, New London Co. CT, and d. 24 Apr 1818, Burlington, Otsego Co., NY) and Elizabeth Smith (b. 1754 Voluntown, New London Co., CT, and d. 25 Jun 1824, Burlington, Otsego Co., NY). Becke Dawson's email of 10 May 2007 provides the following additional information contained in the 'History of Hancock County', 1880 Gregg's:

"Perez Briggs ( son of Noah Briggs and Elizabeth Trumbull) b. Sept 7, 1746 Voluntown, Connecticut [and] d. April 24, 1818 Otsego County, New York. He and Elizabeth Smith had at least 8 children. The first 5 were born in Voluntown, Connecticut - the last of those 5 born 1787. The following three, of which Elizabeth was the first were born in Otsego County, New York.

". . . Noah Briggs, of Bristol County, Massachusetts, moved to Voluntown, Connecticut, about 1745. He married Elizabeth Trumbull, of Taunton, Massachusetts, where he resided for several years. Eleven children were born to them, namely, Elkanah, Zephaniah, Perez, William, Isaac, John, James, Betsey, Freelove, Sarah and Susan. Zephaniah married and lived in Sherman, Connecticut, and died in 1838 or 1839, aged one hundred and two years. Perez married Elizabeth Smith and lived in Burlington, Otsego County, New York. He settled in 1789, in Burlington.

William married a Gallup, and resided in Sterling, Conn., and died at the age of 93. Isaac was not married, and died a soldier in Washington's army. John married a Hall, and moved to Skaneateles, NY, and died in 1838, leaving several children. John was a Revolutionary War soldier. William and James were soldiers, also. James married, Phebe Bowen, of Rhode Island, and had twelve children. "

Becke Dawson also located Elizabeth Briggs' brother, Lotan and his wife & family, locating to Iowa Territory - Lee County - which is directly across the river from Nauvoo, in the 1840 census. Supposedly he emigrated there in 1839.

By email of 11 May 2002, Connie Eccles advises that both Nathan and Elizabeth have a joint stone at the Historic Nauvoo Cemetery.

A listing of famous people related to Perez Briggs can be found at Ancestry.com: Relation Finder .

2a. Luke Perkins Prentice, aka Luke Peley Prentice, b. Oct 1817, Otsego Co., NY (per 1900 census) and d. after 1900 when he appeared in the Carthage, Hancock Co., IL census at age 82. 1860 in Sonora, Hancock Co., IL. A biographical sketch for Luke can be found at Ancestry.com .

She was the dau. of William Hall and Elizabeth Bellinger. A biographical sketch and photo of William Hall and h is family can be found at Ancestry.com . Luke and his family were living with Nathan and Elizabeth in the 1850 Nauvoo census

Becke Dawson's email of 11 May 2007 says that ". . . Christine Hall, according to the same bio of Luke's was a native of Erie County, New York." It is presently unclear whether Christine Hall is the same person as the Christiana Hall shown in the IGI as b. 21 Jul 1822, of New York, dau. of William Hall and Elizabeth Bellinger.

He m. Abigail S. Perry, b. 1823, Otsego, Otsego Co., NY and d. after 1880, probably in Otsego Co., NY. She was the dau. of Micah Michael Perry and Hannah Cass. An Ancestor Chart for Abigail can be found at Ancestry.com . Children:

3.2 John Rose Prentiss was b. Oct 1850 in NY. Although additional investigation is needed to confirm that he is the same person, he is probably the John R. Prentice who appears in the 1860, 1880 and 1900 Otsego County, NY census with his wife, Ella A., b. Oct 1852 in NY. They had 1 or more children, including:

    1. Nellie M. Prentice, b. c. 1879, NY. She appears living at home in the 1900 Otsego Co. census with her husband, Walter A. Nearing, b. c. Nov 1877, NY and her daughter:

He m. 2nd Cora V. Finch on 23 Apr 1879. He appears in the 1880 and 1910 census in Unadilla, Otsego Co., NY, as a farmer, with his wife, Cora V..

3.4 Don Prentice, b. c. 1858, Otsego Co., NY. At home in 1880. He may also be the Don Pentice, b. c. 1858, who appears in the 1930 census in Earlville, Madison Co., NY with his wife, Cora, b. c. 1863. No children are shown, but they might have left home by then. However, no other Prentices appear in Madison Co., NY in the 1930 census. Don died before the 1940 census where his wife appears as a widow.

He m. Cora R. c. 1881, NY. She was b. Jul 1863, NY. They appear in the 1900 census in Gilbertsville Vill., Otsego Co., NY. She appears as a widow in the 1940 census in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, living with her daughter, Myrtle. They had 1 or more children, including:

    1. Myrtle Prentice, b. Jul 1885, NY. At home in 1900 census in Gilbertsville Village. She m. Raymend L. Chamberlain. In 1920 & 1940 they were living in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, with no children shown.

    4. Son Prentiss, age 10-16 and b. 1804-1810. Subject to verification, he is likely the Nathan Prentice who later appears in the 1830 census in Burlington, Otsego Co., NY as age 20-30 and b. 1800-1810 with his wife, age 20-30 and b. c. 1800-1810. Also living with them is an older female, age 60-70 and b. c. 1760-70 who might be either the mother of Nathan or the mother of Nathan's wife, and son:

    1. Son Prentice, age 0-5 and b. 1825-40

We think it is also likely that "Son Prentice" may be the same person as Nathan Prentice who appears in our Fall 2012 Prentice Newsletter in the article entitled Nathan Prentice of Burlington, Otsego Co., NY . Investigation is continuing.

    5. Son Prentiss, age 10-15 and b. 1815-20. Tentatively he is identified as Frederick Ray Prentice/Prentiss, b. 2 Jan 1815, Otsego Co., NY and d. 28 Jul 1879, Polk Co., IA and bur. at Rising Sun Cem., Polk County. Frederick first appears in the 1850 Nauvoo, Hancock Co., IL census. The 1850 census does not give the birth place of Frederick's father, but we do know from the 1850 census that Frederick's father was living in NY in 1815 when Frederick was born.

Entire families of parents-children, brothers and sisters often moved together in that period, so we took a look to see what other families appeared in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., IL during that same period. Nathan's age is such that he may be Frederick's father. There is an appropriate age spread of 28 years between them. And their respective NY residences (1815 and 1817) and Nauvoo residences (1847 and 1850) coincide. It may also be significant that Frederick named one of his sons "Daniel Nathan Travis Prentice".

Frederick's 1815 birth would also match the 1811-1820 birth period of 1 of Nathan's 2 young sons shown in the 1820 census.

Frederick m. Lucy Ann Kirk, b. 27 Nov 1824, Lebanon, Marion Co., KY and d. 22 Feb 1905, Polk Co., IA (per Illinois Marriage Index). She was the dau. of Travis Kirk and Malinda?Melinda Purdy. An Ancestor Chart for Travis Kirk can be found at Ancestry.com .

Lucy is bur. Rising Sun Cem. with her husband. They were m. 7 Dec 1843 in McDonough Co., IL. Lucy later appears in the 1880 Grant, Polk Co., IA census without her husband. She also appears in the 1900 Mitchellsville, Polk Co., IA census living with her daughter, Mary. Their children per John Casall, email, 1 Sep 2010:

    1. Pitt Prentice, b. 8 Jul 1845, IL. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [7]
    2. DeWitt Prentice, b. 2 Jun 1847, Polk Co., IL and d. 27 Oct 1888, Polk Co., IA, and bur. Rising Sun Cemetery. At home in 1880, unmarried. By email of 31 Aug 2005, Becke Dawson relates she has a copy of a letter by DeWitt his mother, Lucy, from Stockton, CA who was there with his brother, Ray, and family.
    3. Ray Prentice, b. 12 Sep 1849, IL. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [8]
    4. Daniel Nathan Travis Prentice, b. 27 Oct 1851, IL. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[9]
    5. Mary Prentice, b. 19 Nov 1854, Polk Co., IA, and d. there 29 Jul 1912, IA. Bur. in Rising Sun Cemetery. At home in 1880, unmarried, and living with her mother in the 1900 census.
    6. Ellen Prentice, b. 24 Nov 1856, IA,, and d. 16 May 1896. She m. Joseph Alexander Purdy on 25 Jan 1883 in Polk Co., IA..
    7. Josephine Prentice, b. 7 Mar 1860, IA. She m. John A. Westergren on 5 Jan 1890, Polk Co., IA. He was b. c. 1863, Sweden. They appear in the 1920 census in Chicago, Cook Co., IL, and in the 1930 census in Rockford, Winnebago Co., IL. Son:
      1. (illegible) Westergren, b.c. 1899, IL. At home in Chicago in the 1930 census. He may, or may not, be the Edwin Westergren who appears in the 1930 Chicago census as b. c. 1899, IL, with his wife, Helen, b. c. 1904. He is probably the same person as Edwin Westergren shown in the SSDI as b. 28 Jul 1898, who received his SS# in IL, and d. Nov 1967 in Chicago.
    8. Elizabeth Prentice, b. 5 Nov 1863, Polk Co., IA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [10]
    9. William Prentice, b. 17 May 1866, IA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [11]

    6. Truman Prentice, b. 11 Jul 1824, NY. Not in 1870 census. Although additional investigation is needed for confirmation, he may be the same person as the Truman Prentice who appears in the 1860 census in Clinton Co., PA, as b. c. 1826 in NY with his wife, Elizabeth, b. c. 1826, PA. He is probably the same Truman Prentis who appears in the 1880 census in Sterling Run, Cameron Co., PA. Children:

    1. William Prentice, b. c. 1849, PA. Not in 1870 census. He does appear in the 1880 census in Sterling Run, Cameron Co., PA, working at a Tannery, and with his wife, Margarette, b. c. 1845, PA. Not in 1920 census. Children (per 1880 census):
      1. Ella Prentice, b. c. 1873, PA.
      2. Charles Prentice, b. c. 1877, PA. He may, or may not, be the Charles Prentice shown in the 1920 census in Baltimore, MD, b. c. 1878, PA and living with his sister, Cora, b. c. 1880, MD. If the same person, then Cora would be a daughter of William b. after the 1880 census and who had moved to MD in 1880. However, William does not appear at all in the 1920 census.
    2. John L. Prentice, b. c. 1852, PA. At home in 1880. Not in 1920 census.
    3. Mary C.(?) Prentice b. c. 1853, PA. At home in 1880.
    4. Amelia Prentice, b. c. 1865, PA. Not at home in 1880.
    5. Marcus E. Prentice, b. c. 1859. PA. Not in 1870 census. At home in 1880. Not in 1900, 1910 or 1920 census.

Also shown in Truman's home in the 1880 census in Sterling Run, Cameron Co., PA are:

    1. Robery Littlefield, son in law, b. c. 1844,
    2. Robert L. Littlefield, grandson, b. c. 1872. Not in 1920 census.
    3. William Littlefield, grandson, b. c. 1874. Not in 1920 census.
    4. Truman Prentice, grandson, b. c. 1875, PA. . . . . . . [12]

It is improbable that Amelia Prentice, b. 1865, is the mother of the Littlefield children. It is more likely that Truman had another daughter, b. before 1849, who did not appear in the 1860 census, who m. Robert Littlefield.

    7. Pitt Prentice, b. 8 Jul 1845, McDonough Co., IL and d. 28 Apr 1891 in Mitchellville, Polk Co., IA and bur. there. He appears in the 1880 Polk Co., IA census with his wife and family.

He m. Sarah Elizabeth Young on 29 Aug 1872, Polk Co., IA. She was b. c. 1849, IN, dau. of John S. Young and Mary of Polk Co, IA. She appears as a widow in the 1900 census in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA. with her daughters. Children:

    1. Fanny Prentice, b. 26 Feb 1876, Polk Co., IA. At home in 1900 Des Moines, IA, census.
    2. Edith Prentice, b. 31 Jan 1878, Polk Co., IA At home in 1900 Des Moines, IA, census.

    8. Ray Prentice, b. 12 Sep 1849, IL, and d. after 1930. At home in 1880, unmarried. He appears in the 1900 Vallejo, Solano Co., CA census with his wife and family.

He m. Mary Elizabeth Webb in CA. She was b. c. Apr 1860 in CA. She was the daughter of Jesse Webb and Melinda D. Gard. Ray does not appear in the 1910 Vallejo census with his family and by 1920 may be deceased, Children per 1900 census.:

    1. Ada/Ida R. Prentice, b. c. Oct 1886, CA. At home in the 1910 census.
    2. Ora M. Prentice, b. c. Apr 1888, CA. She m. William J. Marten/Martess/Marters, b. c. 1877 in India, and they are living with her mother in the 1910 census.
    3. Fay Prentice (female), b. c. Jul 1898, CA. It is unclear if she is the (illegible) Prentice, dau., shown in the 1910 census as b. c. 1899, CA and living at home

Ray's sister, Elizabeth, has an old family photo of man named "Ray", perhaps the same person.

By email of 2 Sep 2005, Becky Dawson provided a copy of the following letter from DeWitt Prentice (#1 ii. above) to his mother, Lucy, sent while DeWitt was visiting his brother, Ray in Stockton, CA, on 9 Oct 1887. Added clarifying material is enclosed in brackets within the letter:

      Stockton, Call [California, ] Oct 9th, 1887
      Mrs. Lucy Prentice

      Dear Mother,

I have been looking for a letter from home for a long time but did not hear a word until last night - [my brother] Ray got a letter from Josie [Ray's sister, Josephine Prentice, b. 7 Mar 1860, IA]. We were all glad to hear from home. I wrote you in July and it came back to me last week from the dead letter office. I thought I would write again.

We are all well at present - We have all had a kind of a distemp. I was up in the mountains fishing and feel from a rock and received a severe cut in the hip but is getting well, it laid me up about ten days. Josie says that you are talking of renting the farm for next year. I and Ray don't think that it would be the best plan. If you have got the stock and machinery to run the place with, you had better run it yourself. Or if you would rather I will go home and run it for you next year. I guess I could stay away from this country that long.

Ray and I got disappointed in getting a ranch on the Sand but Ray has another year on White's ranch. The longer I stay in this county the better I like it - crops were pretty fair this year in this part of the country and the summer has been cool. We have got a great Boom started in this county - land has advanced about one half in value in the last three months and wages and all things have gone up in proportion. Wheat is low this market is overstocked, it is worth about $1.30 per (?), fruit and vegetables are very cheap. Butter is worth about 70 cts - per roll. Eggs 25cts doz.

What has become of [my brothers] Pitt and Will. How are they getting along. How is Sarah and the little girls [perhaps a reference to the wife, Sarah, of his brother Pitt and their daughters Fanny and Edith]? I wrote them some time since. Adda [probably a reference to Ray's daughter, Ada, who was then 1 year old] is as fat as ever, she is very large for a child of her age but is very healthy.

Ray has got about 60 hogs on the ranch. What has become of the Kirk boys [sons of Lucy's brother , Story Co., IA]? I suppose Uncle Jim and Bob are still in Story Co. What is Sandys and Ellen's P.O. address [Sandy and Ellen are his sister Ellen and her husband Joseph Alexander (Sandy) Purdy]?

What has become of Uncle Swartz (sp?). How is his health. I see from Josie's letter that Mrs. Morey is dead. What has become of Amanda and the small girl, I have forgotten her name. Is Warnoch still living on the old place? It is very bad about Willis Hawkins.

Well I will have to close for this time hoping that I will hear from you soon. The folks all join me in love to all. Will write to the girls soon.

      From your affectionate son,
      DW Prentice

    9. Daniel Nathan Travis Prentice, b. 27 Oct 1851, IL (per 1856 Mills Co., IA census and 1870 census). He d. 1944 in Cadmus, Linn Co., KS, where he is buried. Daniel appears in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 Linn Co., KS census as "Dann Prentice." In the 1910 census, Dann was called "Donnal T. Prentice." In the Quick genealogy, above, he is called "Daniel Prentice." An obituary published in the 4 Aug 1944 "La Cygne Journal" on 4 Aug 1944 says:

"D. A. N. Prentiss, well known citizen of Scott Township died Tuesday night at his home a couple miles north and east of Calmus. Burial Cadmus Cemetery Friday afternoon, 2 PM."

Dann married Clara Minnie Briggs Collins on 12 Feb 1878 in Linn Co., KS. Clara was b. 12 Feb 1861 in IL, d. 25 Feb 1936, and is bur. in the cemetery at Cadmus, Linn, KS. It is presently unclear whether she is the Clara Collins who appears in the 1870 census in Viola, Mercer Co., IL, as b. c. 1860, IL, dau. of William P. and Mary R. Collins. By email of 23 Jul 2007, Lynda Weichel advises as follows:

According to my husband's family history that was passed on to us from his mother's side of the family, Clara Minnie Collins, born 12 February 1861, in Hancock County, Illinois, married Dann Nathan Travis Prentice. Her parents were Harvey Collins (b. 15 Feb 1818, Athens, OH) and his wife, Sarah Mariah Briggs (b. 9 Jul 1829, Fontana, KS).

Sarah Mariah Briggs was the daughter of Loton/Lotan Briggs, b. 8 August 1793, Burlington, Otsego Co., NY (son of Perez Briggs and Elizabeth Smith) and Touradocta/Touradocia Pope, b. 10 January 1797. Loton/Lotan Briggs was the brother of Elizabeth Briggs, b. 22 January 1791, who married Nathan Prentice, b. 1787 (#2, above). (emphasis added)

An Ancestor Chart for Sarah can be found at Ancestry.com . An Ancestor Charts for Lotan Briggs can be found at LDS Ancestral File , Ancestry.com and Ancestry1.com .

Charles Prentice, 96, of Dimock, PA passed away, Monday, December 17, 2012 at Gracious Living Estates. Born October 7, 1916 in Butternuts, NY, he was the son of the late George and Bessie [Boyd] Prentice.

His wife Helen L. [Halbert] Prentice predeceased him in 2009.

In 1978, he retired from Bendix Corporation in South Montrose after 40+ years of service. Prior to moving to Dimock, he worked at their Scintilla Division in Sidney, NY. Upon moving to Dimock in 1951, he and Helen became members of the Dimock Christian Community Church. They were active members of the church and the community and volunteered their time and services whenever possible. He was a Justice of the Peace for the township for several years. He was a Boy Scout leader for several years while Tom & Gary were active in scouts. When their sons became active in basketball at school, they were faithful spectators at all their games, regardless of where they played. (And Helen kept her own stats at each game, in case the real statistician made a mistake.) He loved to fish and while his family was still young, they spent every summer vacation at Sandy Pond, NY. He built his own motorboat, which the whole family enjoyed for many years. After his retirement, he spent the next 10-15 years concentrating on his passion for woodworking. He became a master furniture maker and won numerous awards at county fairs in the area. If any family or close friends were being married, they could count on Chuck making a special piece of furniture for their wedding gift. These were all gifts that are cherished to this day. He became Royal Arch Mason on April 16, 1946 with the Masonic Temple Chapter #277 in Oneonta, NY and was an active member until his passing. He and Helen never went on any extravagant vacations. Their idea of having fun was spending quality time with family and friends. They had been married for almost 71 years at the time of her passing. You would rarely see one without the other. They are both sorely missed.

Survivors include his sons & daughters-in-law, Tom Prentice of California, Gary & Michele Prentice of Texas, Steve & Joann Prentice of, New Jersey, 8 grandsons, 1 great grandson, sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Charlotte Oliphant of Binghamton, NY, Georgiana Halbert of New Berlin, NY, Joyce Halbert of New Berlin, NY, Peter D'Ambrosio of Philadelphia, PA.

Besides his parents & wife he was predeceased by daughter-in-law, Elaine Prentice & siblings, Loren, Dick, Lois, Carrie, Annetta & Emmer.

Who are the parents of Nathaniel and Henry Prentice?

There are several possibilities as to the identity of the parents of Nathaniel and Henry:

Thomas Prentice of Stonington, CT.

Thomas Prentice Sr. is identified in Binney's 1883 edition, at page 334, as "of Stonington, CT" but does not give a birth date or birth place. Working backward from the 1786 birth of his son, Thomas Jr., this Thomas Sr. was probably born between 1736 and 1760. It seems likely, therefore, that Thomas Sr. is the same person as the Thomas Prentice who is #8v, pg 171, born 7 Apr 1743 at Stonington, CT. However, additional investigation is needed for confirmation.

Thomas Sr. may have married Martha E. Stanton and died about 1786-9 (see the Denison genealogy, pg. 344) but that has not yet been confirmed.

Thomas Sr. may also be the Thomas Prentice shown in the 1790 Middletown, Ulster Co., NY census with a wife, 2 sons under 16, 2 sons over 16, and 4 daughters. He might also be be the Thomas Prentice shown in the 1800 Oneida Co., NY census with a wife, 2 sons born 1774-84, a daughter born 1774-84, and a daughter born 1784-90.

If he did marry Martha E. Stanton, above, then he might be the father of Stanton Prentice discussed in our Fall '97 Newsletter as well as the father of Nathaniel and Henry.

Thomas Prentice Jr., his son, was born 25 Nov 1786. He was adopted and brought up by Rev. Jedediah Randall and wife (his uncle and his aunt who was probably Thomas Sr.'s sister, Esther). Thomas Jr. moved to Norwich, Chenango Co., NY and settled on a farm near Norwich. On 15 Mar 1810 he married Sally York of Brookfield, NY, born 29 Oct 1787. The only THOMAS of Stonington in a suitable time frame to be the father of the 1786 THOMAS for whom Binney had not identified as having a family was the 1743 THOMAS. This is a circumstance lending some support to the idea that Thomas Sr. died living a widow with young children.

What happened the THOMAS of Middletown? He is not there in 1800, and the only THOMAS in the 1800 NY census lives in Oneida County.

One factor seeming to suggest the Middletown THOMAS is the 1743 THOMAS is the mention in Binney’s 1883 book that the 1786 THOMAS was adopted and brought up by his aunt and uncle. That would be consistent with a hypothesis that the Middletown THOMAS died after the 1790 census (when the 1786 THOMAS was only 4) and his children being thereafter adopted by others.

However, lest we get carried away with the theory about THOMAS PRENTICE of Middletown dying after 1790, the 1800 census index lists a THOMAS PRENTICE in Oneida County, 00201-01101, signifying: - parents, over 45, born before 1755 - two son, age 16-26, born 1774-84 - a daughter, age 16-26, born 1774-84 - a daughter, age 10-16, born 1784-90

That family is not inconsistent with that of the Middletown THOMAS 10 years earlier (born in 1743, he would have been only 57 in 1800) if one allows for possible marriages and deaths of children in the earlier family.

We have not yet identified the Oneida County THOMAS. Even if it is the same family, that wouldn’t necessarily preclude HENRY’S mother from being widowed at the time she moved to Burlington Flats (which lies only 15 miles or so south of Utica, Oneida County) at some unknown date before HENRY’S marriage in 1812 in Burlington.

Joseph and Hannah Prentice of Preston, CT:

If Nathaniel/Nathen and Henry were born at Preston, they would likely be descendants of Joseph & Hannah (Chesebrough) Prentice, the proginators of all the Prentices born at Preston. The following descendants of theirs could be the parents of Nathaniel and Henry:

  • 1. Elihu Prentice Jr., b. 6 Sep 1743 and son of Joseph's son, Elihu Sr. (See our Prentice book, pg. 263, #8iii.) No marriage or death is presently known for him. However, Elihu Jr. did have at least two brothers, Jamison and Nathaniel, who had moved to Hampton Co., MA by 1780; if Elihu Jr. accompanied them, then he would not be the parent in question.

  • 2. Ephraim Prentice, b. 22 Jul 1749 and son of Joseph's son, Joseph. (Prentice book, pg. 262, #6ix.) No marriage or death is presently known for him. However, he too had siblings that moved to Hampton Co., MA before 1787; if Ephraim accompanied them, then he would not be the parent in question.

  • 3. Ephraim Prentice, b. 27 Aug 1752, son of Joseph's son, Nathaniel. (Prentice book, pg. 269, #29.) No marriage or death is presently known for him. However, his parents and at least some of his brothers moved to Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., VT before 1787; if Ephraim accompanied them, then he would not be the parent in question.

  • 4. Samuel Prentice, b. 4 Oct 1749, son of Joseph's son, Elihu Sr. (Prentice book, pg. 273, #37.) He married Ann/Anne Benjamin on 29 Aug 1771 in Preston. We presently show ownly a daughter for him, Abigail, b. 12 Nov 1772. An Abigail Prentice married Jonathan Hart in Preston on 10 Dec 1795, but it is not confirmed that it is the same Abigail. However, it is her, that would indicate her father, Samuel, was still living in Preston in 1787 and likely had more children, names not yet known.
