    Bernard J. Prentiss, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II, died unexpectedly Wednesday (April 28, 2004) in Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 83.

    Mr. Prentiss, of North Buffalo, was a retired employee of General Motors' Town of Tonawanda Forge Plant. A lifelong city resident, he lived on Emslie Street until age 11, when both parents died and he went to live with aunts and uncles. He attended St. Patrick School and, after obtaining his working papers at 16, was employed by Reliable Junk and Lake City Salvage.

    In 1941, he married Anne Furioso. Three years later, he enlisted in the Army. He served for two years, taking part in one of Europe's decisive battles. He was discharged in 1946. He joined General Motors in 1952 and operated a forklift at the forge plant until he retired in 1985.

    Known to friends as "Butch," or "Huncie," he was a baseball fan and played first base in several softball leagues during his youth.

    Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Arthur J. and Bernard J. Jr., both of Buffalo; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Parkside and Parker avenues.
