Adam Prentice of Carnwath, Scotland

Adam Prentice of Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2007 and Revised: 9 Jan 2007

Update of 22 Dec 2006: Adam Prentice's ancestry can be found in our Summer 2006 article about Thomas Prentice of Lesmahagow, Scotland . Adam Prentice is #12.

The Problem

We have received information from Marion Jacox about Adam Prentice who was probably born c. 1825-32, but he could have been much older. He married Agnes Dick on 23 Nov 1852 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of David Dick, laborer, and Grace Elder.

We have no further information about Adam, but he died at some date before the death of his wife who, at the time of her death, was described as his widow.

Agnes died 20 Dec 1881 at 9am at Forth Parish of Carnwath at age 65. Cause of death was Enteric Fever of 21 days duration and Congestion of Lungs of 15 days as certified by Geo. W. Thomson, M.D.

Adam and Agnes had one or more children, including:

  • William Prentice, living in 1881.

Marion Jacox is a descendant of David Dick and Grace Dick and lives in Victoria, B.C.

Some Clues

Marion Jacox says that Adam Prentice m. Agnes Dick on 23 Nov 1852 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire. In reviewing the 1851 census, we found an Adam Prentice of Carnwath, b. c. 1791 in Carnwath, who had a Servant named Agness Dick, b. c. 1817 in Carnwath.

Although Adam then had 3 children living at home, no wife is shown. One could reasonably infer that in 1851 Adam was a widower and that he later married Agness Dick. The 1841 census, 10 years earlier, shows that same Adam Prentice with a wife and family.

A Proposed Solution

Subject to further investigation for confirmation, we suggest that Adam's family genealogy is as follows:

1. Adam Prentice was b. c. 1791 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire, and d. sometime before 1881 when his his 2nd wife, Agness, died and was called a widow.

He m. 1st Jean, b. c. 1796, Lanarkshire. Known children:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1816, Carnwath. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Adam Prentice, b. c. 1821, Carnwath. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  3. David Prentice, b. c. 1827, Carnwath. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
  4. Jannet Prentice, b. c. 1829, probably Carnwath. At home in Carnwath in 1841. She may be the same person in the 1851 Carnwath census called Isace Prentice, b. c. 1829, Carnwath.
  5. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1840, Carnwath. At home in Carnwath in 1841 and 1851. He appears in the 1861 census in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, with his wife, Ann, b. c. 1840, Wishaw, Lanarkshire; no children shown

Adam m. 2nd Agness Dick on 23 Nov 1852 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire. She was b. c. 1816 and was the daughter of David Dick, laborer, and Grace Elder. They do not appear in the 1861 census.

Agnes died, a widow, on 20 Dec 1881 at 9 am at Forth Parish of Carnwath at age 65. Cause of death was Enteric Fever of 21 days duration and Congestion of Lungs of 15 days as certified by Geo. W. Thomson, M.D.

Adam and Agnes had one or more children, including:

  1. William Prentice, living in 1881 (Marion Jacox). He does not appear in the 1861 census.

2. John Prentice, b. c. 1816, Carnwath. At home in Carnwath in 1841. He appears in the 1851 census in Carriden, West Lothian, with his wife and family. Not in 1861 census.

3. Adam Prentice, b. c. 1821, Carnwath. At home in Carnwath in 1841 and 1851. He is almost certainly the Adam Prentice who appears in the 1861 census in Greenock East, Renfrewshire, as b. c. 1819, Carnwath, with his wife and family.

He m. Janet, b. c. 1824, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshie. Children per census records:

  5. James Paterson Prentice, b. c. 1860, Greenock, Renfrewshire. At home in 1861 census in Greenock East, Renfrewshire.

4. David Prentice, b. c. 1827, probably Carnwath. Not home in 1851. He appears in the 1861 census in Carnwath with his wife and family.
