Introduction: This article on a "Black" Prentice family is based the 1920 census and on an obituary for Chester A. Prentice published in the Mansfield, OH, "Mansfield Journal" on 27 Jan 2006:

1. William "Bill" Prentice was b. c. 1853, KY.

He m. Celia Overstreet, b. c. 1872, KY. In 1913 they lived in Wilmore, Jessamine Co., KY. They appear in the 1920 census as "Prentis" where their "Race" is given as "B" for Black. They had 6 or more children, including:

  1. Josie___ Prentis, b. c. 1904, KY.
  2. Theodore Prentis, b. c. 1906, KY.
  3. Betsie Prentis, b. c. 1910, KY.
  4. Wil Berry(?) Prentis, b. c. 1912, KY.
  5. Chester A. Prentis (aka Prentice), b. 20 Mar 1913, Wilmore, KY. . . . . . . . . [2]
  6. Mattie Bird Prentis, b. c. 1917, KY.

Also appearing in the home in 1920 was a Step-son, Robert White, b. c. 1900, KY.

2. Chester Arthur Prentice, b. 20 Mar 1913, Wilmore, KY, and d. 22 Jan 2006, age 92, at the Woodlawn Nursing Home in Mansfield. Chester worked as a bus driver for the Detroit Board of Education for many years and came back to Mansfield in the mid-1980s. He was a member of Cedar Top Baptist Church in Wilmore, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Funeral at Herlihy-Tinsman Funeral Home, 173 Park Avenue West, on Monday from 11 a.m. to noon where funeral services will be at noon with the Rev. Hunt officiating. Interment atMansfield Memorial Park.

No wife is mentioned in his obituary, so she was likely either divorced or deceased. Children named in his obituary:

    Chester Arthur Prentice II, 72, of Green Street died Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the VA Medical Center, Cooper Drive. A native of Louisville, he was born July 23, 1940, to the late Chester Arthur Sr. and Melvalena Prentice.

    He was a former employee of Glen Arvin Nursing Home, having worked in the janitorial department and as an aide and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

    Survivors are children Becky Spillman, Teresa King and Mary Robinson; brothers John Mikens, James McMillian and Michael Mikens; sister Katherine Newby; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Graveside service was Friday at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with Military Honors. Family received friends on Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home.
