Winter 2005 and Revised 29 Oct 2006

Update of 30 Jan 2006: This article has now been replaced in its entirety by our Spring 2006 article about Thomas Prentice of Hamilton and East Kilbride .

We are helping Judith (Prentice) Crociati of Plymouth, MA, and Barbara Prentice in tracing their Prentice roots in Scotland. Here is what we have so far based on correspondence with her, with Christine Hadden, Barbara Prentice, the SSDI and 1930 census information:

1. John Prentice was likely b. c. 1855-1860, perhaps in, or near, E. Kilbride, where he married in 1885.

John m. Marion Nicol on 3 Mar 1885 in E. Kilbride where his marriage record identifies him as a Farmer (per Christine Hadden, email, 27 Oct 2005). They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Thomas Weir Prentice, b. 10 Jan 1886, Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland. . . . . . . [2]
  2. Jean Prentice. She had daughters Mary & Isobel, who live in the Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, area. (per Judith Crociati, email, 26 Oct 2005).

2. Thomas Weir Prentice was b. 10 Jan 1886 in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland (by email of 29 Jan 2006, Barbara Prentice has suggested that Thomas may have been born in Castle on Douglas as she still has cousins in that area) and d. May 1986 in Plymouth, MA, USA, at the age of 100 years. His mother died when he was born. His father soon remarried and may have had 9 more children (per Judith Crociati, email, 26 Oct 2005).

Thomas emigrated to the United States in the early 1900s when Thomas was about 20 (per Barbara Prentice) and settled initially in New Jersey, then Delaware, and still later in Plymouth, Plymouth Co., MA. Thomas was a Guernsey herdsman and had the opportunity to buy Forges Farm in Plymouth, which he owned until it closed in 1968, and he retired.

Thomas m. Mary Cook who was b. 1890 in the "Irish Free State" (Ireland). She had immigrated from Ireland about the same time he came over from Scotland. Children:

  1. John F. Prentice, b. c. 1915, New Jersey. He is Judith's father.
  2. Mary Prentice, b. c.1916, New Jersey
  3. Thomas Weir Prentice Jr., b. c. 1920, Delaware. . . . . . . . . . . [3]

3. Thomas Weir Prentice Jr., b. c. 1920, Delaware. The name of his wife is not yet known. Although investigation is ongoing, they may be the parents of:

  1. Barbara Prentice was b. c. 1945-57, perhaps in Plymouth, MA. . . . . . . [4]
  2. Lynne Prentice was b. 31 Jul 1959 in Plymouth, MA. . . . . . . . [5]
  3. Maryann Prentice. She m. Mr. Nunes and in 1996 lived in Plymouth, MA.

4. Barbara Prentice was b. 1 Mar 1950 (per her email, 28 Jan 2006), perhaps in Plymouth, MA, (as was her sister Lynne Prentice, below) and living in Jan 2006. The name of her 1st husband is not known. Children:

His obituary appears in the 1 Oct 1997 Patriot Ledger, Quincy. He was studying computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and was in his junior year at U/Mass. He was a 1995 graduate of Barnstable High School. He played on the varsity soccer team in high school and was captain of the junior varsity "Red Raiders" Hockey Team in Barnstable. She graduated from Plymouth Carver High School in 1977. She attended Fisher Junior College and Cape Cod Community College. She lived in East Wareham for seven months and six years in Hyannis prior to that. She is survived by two sisters: Maryann Nunes of Plymouth and Barbara Prentice of Centerville (see Barbara Prentice item, above).

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Friday in Osterville Baptist Church. Burial was om Vine Hills Cemetery, Plymouth.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

Although further investigation is needed, it appears that John Prentice might be the same John Prentice who was b. 28 Apr 1856 in E. Kilbride and who appears as #viii in our Summer 2000 issue about Thomas Prentice of Hamilton and East Kilbride . Investigation is continuing.
