John Prentice of Canewdon, Essex Co., England

John Prentice of Canewdon, Essex Co., England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2005 and Revised 8 Mar 2009

Update of 8 Mar 2009: John Prentice is #4.3 in our Spring 2003 article entitled Prentices of Canewdon, Essex, England . That article now replaces this article.

We are helping Chris Prentice in tracing his roots. Here is what we have so far:

A. John Prentice was b. c. 1840 in Canewdon, Essex, England. He appears in the 1861 Prittlewell, Essex, census as a Lodger with his birth date and place shown as c. 1839 in Canewdon. His occupation is shown as "Lab", presumably a Labourer. John later appears in the 1871 census in Prittlewell, Essex Co., England, with his wife and family.

He m. Susan, b. c. 1842, Southchurch, Essex. Neither John nor Susan (Susanna?) appear in the 1881, 1891, or 1901 census and probably were deceased by that time. Children:

  1. John R. Prentice, b. c. 1863, Prittlewell, Essex (per 1871 census). He is likely the same person as the John Prentice who appears in the 1891 Prittlewell census as an unmarried Boarder, b. c. 1865, Prittlewell.
  2. (perhaps) Emma Prentice. She appears in the 1891 Prittlewell census as a Boarder and listed next to her brother, John, above. Her age is hard to read, but may be age 25 which would give her a birth year of c. 1866 and b. in Rochford.
  3. Thomas H. Prentice, b. c. 1867-69, Prittlewell, Essex (per 1871 census). He appears with his brother, James, in the 1881 census in Rochford living at The Workhouse. Not in 1891 census. He does appear in the 1901 census in Mitcham, Surrey, with his wife, Martha (Danes?), b. c. 1877, Strood, Kent. Visiting is a sister-in-law, Florence Dances, b. c. 1890, Hoo, Kent, perhaps Martha's sister. No children are shown. .
  4. James G. Prentice, b. c. 1871-2, Prittlewell (per 1881 census). . . . . . . [1]
  5. (probably) Emily Prentice, b. c. 1876, Prittlewell (per 1881 census) She does not appear in the 1891 census or the 1901 census and is likely either married or deceased.

1. James G. Prentice was b. c. 1871-1872, Prittlewell, Essex County, England. He may, or may not, be the James G. Prentice shown in the St. Catherine Death Index who d. in the Sep 1951 quarter in Southend (on-sea?) at the age of 80 (b. c. 1871) since 2 of his children (Amalia and Alfred) were b. in Southend which adjoins Prittlewell.

He does not appear in the 1871 census, but does appear in the 1881 census as a "pauper inmate" at "The Workhouse" on West Street, Rochford, which lies perhaps 2 miles north of Prittlewell. The census record for The Workhouse is simply a listing of several dozen pauper inmates with no indication of family relationships. Listed immediately adjacent to James in the census listing are two persons who are probably James' siblings, also born in Prittlewell:

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1867, Prittlewell. He does not appear in the 1891 or 1901 census.
  2. Emily Prentice, b. c. 1876, Prittlewell. She does not appear in the 1891 or 1901 census. She may, or may not, be the Emily F. Prentice shown in the St. Catherine Death Index who d. in the Mar 1952 quarter in Southend (on-sea?) at the age of 75 (b. c. 1877) .

James G. Prentice m. Louisa, b. c. 1875, Prittlewell, Essex County, England. They appear in the 1901 census in Prittlewell, All Saints Parish, Essex. Known children per 1901 census:

  1. Amalia/Amelia Prentice, b. c. 1898, Southend, Essex
  2. Alfred Prentice, b. c. 1900, Southend, Essex. . . . . . . . [2]

2. Alfred Prentice was b. c. 1900, Southend, Essex. He m. Elizabeth. She was born in that same general time frame and d. c. 1944. They had 3 sons:

  1. Dennis Prentice,
  2. Les Prentice.
  3. Alfred Prentice Jr.

NOTE: By request, further information about living descendants through the present generation has been removed.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

John Prentice was b. c. 1840 in Canewdon, Essex, England. We do not yet have a definitive answer, but it seems probable that is:

  1. either a son of John Prentice and Sarah Humphray, shown in our Spring 2003 article about the Prentices of Canewdow, Essex ,
  2. or perhaps a grandson of John's parents, William Prentice and Sarah Smith by one of their other sons in that same article.
