This an updating of our earlier Spring 2000 article about Archibald Prentice of Cambusnethan .
1. James Prentice was likely b. c. 1739 and is called "of Longmuir, Lanark, Scotland" (per IGI). It is unclear where "Longmuir, Lanark" is located. It may refer to a present day dairy farm which lies just south of Middlefield which is about 4 to 5 miles south of Lesmahagow and perhaps 35 miles SE of Glasgow.
He m. Jean Smellie. Her date of birth is unclear. One IGI entry says she was b. 1746, Cambusnethan, Lanark. Scotland . She was the dau. of William Smellie and Janet Nielson. However, the IGI shows that William and Janet had a daugher, Jean Smellie, chr. 28 May 1750 and d. 4 Dec 1799 (per IGI). Either the 1st daughter died before 1750, or the christening of the 1746 daughter occurred in 1750. Children (per IGI)
- Margaret Prentice, b. 16 Jun 1765, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
- John Prentice, b. 3 Apr 1767, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He may, or may not, be the John Prentice who m. Janet Renwick on 16 Apr 1791 in Cambusnethan. No children appear in the IGI or Glasgow Records.
- Marion/Marrion Prentice, chr. 30 Oct 1768, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
- James Prentice, b. 14 Aug 1771, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He may, or may not, be the James Prentice who m. Isobel Baillie on 7 Nov 1789 in Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. See our Spring 2003 article about John Prentice and Euphemia Scott of Carluke .
- William Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1773, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
- Thomas Prentice, b. 4 Jul 1776, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
- Robert Prentice, b. 9 May 1778, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He is not the Robert Prentice who m. Catharine Mann on 14 May 1796 in Cambusnethan.
- David Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1779, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. Not in 1841, 1851, or 1861 census.
2. Thomas Prentice, b. 4 Jul 1776, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. Although additional confirmation is needed, he might be the Thomas Prentice who m. Jean Cunningham on 19 Apr 1793, Cambusnethan (per Glasgow Records). She may, or may not, be the Jean Cunningham shown in the IGI as chr. 26 Nov 1769 in Cambusnethan, daughter of John Cunningham and Margaret Cooper. Although none are shown in the IGI and Glasgow Records, Thomas and Jean had 1 or more children, including:
- Archibald Prentice, b. c. 1806-7, Cambusnethan. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
3. Archibald Prentice, b. c. 1806-7, Cambusnethan and d. in Overtown (per Christine Hadden, email, 6 Nov 2005). He appears in the 1861 census of Cambusnethan, Scotland contained in our Winter 1999 issue, which shows the family of Archibald Prentice, a laborer living in Wishaw. At the time of his marriage, he was a Railway Wagon Inspector
He m. Janet Clarkson, b. c. 1810-1811, Cambusnethan, (per Mary Lou Schaff, email, 4 Nov 2005, citing his son's marriage certificate). Janet also appears in the 1861 census.
It seems probable that Archibald and Janet are the persons buried in the Cambusnethan Churchyard at Kirk Road/Greenhead Road, Wishaw. An obelisk stone there reads:
- - Archibald Prentice died 22nd December 1882 aged 77 years (b. c. 1805),
- wife Janet Clarkson died 23rd February 1890 aged 81 years.

Who are James Prentice's Parents? A search of the IGI and Glasgow Records does not identify the parents of any James Prentice b. c. 1739 "of Longmuir." We did, however, find in Glasgow Records a James Prentice, chr. 19 Aug 1739 in Whitburn, Lanark, son of John Prentice and Jean Wardrobe. Whether this is the correct James Prentice is unclear. For their family, see our Spring 2000 article about Whitburn, Scotland, Prentice Vital Records .
