Update of 2 Jul 2006: Benjamin Prentice is a son of Capt. Thomas Prentice of Suffolk, England, who d. 21 Jan 1831 in Providence, RI. He is discussed in our Spring 2006 issue .

1. Benjamin Prentice, b. c. 1801 in MA. He appears in the 1870 census in Worcester, Worcester Co., MA, with his wife, Mehitable, b. c. 1816, MA, and children:

  1. Benjamin W. Prentice Jr., b. c. 1837, MA. . . . . . [2]

2. Benjamin W. Prentice Jr., b. c. 1837. Although he appears in his father's home in the 1870 & 1880 census as a Machinist, it is probable that the rest of the people appearing are his wife and his children. He m. Amelia (DeWing?), b. c. 1838, MA. Children:

  1. Alfred W. Prentice, b. c. 1861, MA. . . . . . . [3]
  2. Charles H. Prentice, b. c. 1864, MA. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
Living with Benjamin and his family in 1880 was his brother in law, Charles DeWing, b. c. 1836, MA.

3. Alfred W. Prentice, b. c. 1861, MA. Not in 1900 census but he does appear in the 1910 census in Worcester, Worcester Co., MA as W. Alfred Prentice with his wife, Ella, b. c. 1866, MA. Not in 1920 census. Children (per 1910 census):

  1. William H. Prentice, b. c. 1884, MA. Not in 1920 census.
  2. George A. Prentice, b. c. 1894, MA. Not in 1920 census.
  3. Norman F. Prentice, b. c. 1896, MA. Not in 1920 census.
  4. Ruth E. Prentice, b. c. 1898, MA.
  5. Albert W. Prentice, b. c. 1905, MA. Not in 1920 census.

Who are the parents of Benjamin Prentice?

Although further investigation is required, Benjamin Prentice, b. c. 1801 in MA, may be the Benj Prentice shown in the 1840 census in Fitchburg, Worcester Co., MA as b. c. 1800-1801, with his wife, b. 1810-1820. Listed just above Benj is Charles Prentice, but 2 males are listed, one 15-20 and one 20-30, the latter probably being Charles.
