Using information from census records, Kerry Prentice's email of 31 Mar 2003 and 8 Apr 2003, and Fletcher Prentice's email of 3 Feb 2009, we have identified the following Prentice families with roots in Canewdon, Essex County, England:

1. John Prentice, b. c. 1700-1718 and d. bef. 1768. He m. 1st Sarah. Son:

  1. John Prentice, bap. 11 Oct 1738, Canewdon, Essex.
  2. (perhaps) Martha Prentice, b. c. 1740. She m. Henry Shettlewood in 1760 in Prittlewell (per IGI).
  3. (perhaps) Susanna Prentice, b. c. 1745-50. She m. John Hartshorn in 1768 in Prittlewell (per IGI).

John m. 2nd Mary. Children:

By email of 28 Mar 2004, Teri adds some additional information as follows:

    "On a visit to the ERO [Essex Record Office] on Thursday last week [18 Mar 2004], I was fortunate to be able to view the original parish register, the microfiche being very poor. In 1766, it seems that Small Pox carried off several of the Prentice Family. Two children, Sarah buried on 22nd October, and John, buried 6th October [1766]. Two other deaths occured in the family at this time. John [the son] died of Small Pox on 5th November. . . and [a Mary Prentice] on 25th October [1766]. . . " (Note: Mary apparently is not the mother or either known daugher of that name; she may be a 3rd daughter or a member of a different family.)

After John d. before 1768, Mary then married, as her 2nd husband, James Whitwell on 10 Feb 1768 in Canewdonb 1768 in Canewdon. Mary d. 4 Jun 1779. Children of Mary and James (per Lorrie Barzdo, email, 19 Feb 2003):

  1. James Whitwell b. 1768. He m. Maria Merritt, 1796 in Canewdon. Died 1833.

James Whitwell then m., as his 2nd wife, Susanna Sudbury in 1782 and they had five more children. James died 1 Dec 1814 in Canewdon.

He m. Sarah Smith on 1 May 1793 in Canewdon Parish Church,Essex. Witnesses were Susannah Starnes and Thomas Pickingill. She was b. c. 1771 in Canewdon and was bur. 6 Nov 1846 at Canewdon Parish Church, age 75. Children:

It is unclear whether she is the same person as their daughter, Emma, b. c. 1833, Canewdon, who appears in their household in the 1851 Canewdon census. Ellen appears in the 1871 census as a Lodger in St. Marylebone in London. In the 1881 census she was unmarried and was then living at 26 Boscobel Gardens, St. Marylebone, London, Middlesex, England. She was a dressmaker.

4.1 William Prentice, b. c. 1827 in Paglesham, Essex, England. He appears as an Agricultural Labourer in the 1861 census in Rawreth, Essex, and in the 1871 census in Eastwood, Essex, with his wife and family. Although the birth dates vary a bit, they are probably the William (Farm Labourer) and Mary who appear in the 1881 census on the Weir Farm in Rayleigh, Essex, with their son Aurthur, b. c. 1861, Rawreth, Essex, below.

He m. Mary, b. c. 1829, Rochford. Children:

  1. (perhaps Elizabeth Prentice) The 1861 Rawreth census also shows an an Elizabeth Prentice listed as Living in School Cottage as a Servant, she is 12 years old and was born c. 1849, South Benfleet. It seems likely that she, too, is a daughter of William and Mary.

4.2 Rebekah/Rebecca Prentice, b. c. 1830, Paglesham. In the 1861 census Rebekah (Spelled Rebecca) had moved out and was living as a laundress with two children, although unmarried, at the Punchbowl Inn in Paglesham which is still there and doing good business.

Also in the household is William Prentice, grandson, b. c. 1858, Paglesham.
    She m. Charles Garrett/Garratt before 1881 in Deptford, Kent. He was b. c. 1853, Grenwich, Kent, and was the son of William Garrett and Sarah Ann Stanford. In 1881 and 1891 they appear as married and living 16 Amersham Grove, Deptford St. Paul, London. Children per basbrks email of 9 Mar 2009:

4.3 John Prentice, b. c. 1839, Canewdon, Essex. He appears in the 1861 Prittlewell, Essex, census as a Lodger with his birth date and place shown as c. 1839 in Canewdon. His occupation is shown as "Lab", presumably a Labourer. John later appears in the 1871 census in Prittlewell, Essex Co., England, with his wife and family.

He m. Susan Rice in Dec 1862 in Rochford RD, Essex. She was b. c. 1842, Southchurch, Essex, and d. c. Mar 1875, Rochford RD, Essex. John does not appear in the 1881, 1891, or 1901 census and probably was deceased by that time. Children:

  3. Thomas H Prentice, b. c. 1869, Prittlewell, Essex or c. 1865, Hoo, Kent. He may, or may not, be the Thomas Prentice shown in the 1901 census in Mitcham, Surrey, as b. c. 1869, Prittlewell, with his wife, Martha Danes , b. c. 1877, Strood, Kent. No children are shown. Living with them is a Sister in Law, Florence Danes, b. c. 1890, Hoo, Kent. An Ancestor Chart for Martha can be found at Ancestry.com . .

  6. Nellie Prentice, b. c. 1877, Prittlewell, Essex. She m. Frederick Franklin, b. c. 1869, Great Dunmow, Essex. They appear in the 1901 Prittlewell census with their children:

    Also living with Nellie's family in 1901 is Thomas Prentice, nephew, b. c. 1891, Leigh, Essex.

4.4 James G. Prentice was b. c. 1871-1872, Prittlewell, Essex County, England. He may, or may not, be the James G. Prentice shown in the St. Catherine Death Index who d. in the Sep 1951 quarter in Southend (on-sea?) at the age of 80 (b. c. 1871) since 2 of his children (Amalia and Alfred) were b. in Southend which adjoins Prittlewell.

He does not appear in the 1871 census, but does appear in the 1881 census as a "pauper inmate" at "The Workhouse" on West Street, Rochford, which lies perhaps 2 miles north of Prittlewell. The census record for The Workhouse is simply a listing of several dozen pauper inmates with no indication of family relationships. Listed immediately adjacent to James in the census listing are two persons who are probably James' siblings, also born in Prittlewell:

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1867, Prittlewell. He does not appear in the 1891 or 1901 census.
  2. Emily Prentice, b. c. 1876, Prittlewell. She does not appear in the 1891 or 1901 census. She may, or may not, be the Emily F. Prentice shown in the St. Catherine Death Index who d. in the Mar 1952 quarter in Southend (on-sea?) at the age of 75 (b. c. 1877) .

James G. Prentice m. Louisa, b. c. 1875, Prittlewell, Essex County, England. They appear in the 1901 census in Prittlewell, All Saints Parish, Essex. Known children per 1901 census:

5. Thomas Prentice, bap 23 Apr 1809, Canewdon, Essex, and d. 1881 in Essex. He appears as an unmarried Lodger in the 1851 Canewdon census. 1841 census in Barking, Essex. He was a labourer. From 1856 to 1881 they lived in Rochford, and in 1881 census is shown living on Lower North St., Rochford.

He m. Sarah Ann Choat. She was b. c. 1834 in Rochford or Burnham, Essex.She was the dau. of Mr. Choat and Sarah, both b. c. 1796. Children per Ancestry.com ::

6. Lucy Prentice, b. 2 Nov 1856, Rochford, Essex and bap. 17 Mar 1871, St. Andrews, Rochford. 1861 at home. However, in the 1881 census, Lucy is shown as b. in Great Stambridge, Essex.

She m. William Henry Hawkins on 9 Oct 1875, St. Andrews, Rochford. He was b. c. 1853 in Eastwood, Essex, the son of George Hawkins. In 1881 they lived at Bournes Green, Cottage No. 6, Southchurch, Essex. In 1875 William was a labourer and in 1881 a Hay Binder. Son:

  1. William Prentice, bap. 5 Sep 1875, Rochford, prior to his mother's marriage to William Henry Hawkins.

In addition to the foregoing family line, we also found a John Prentice, bachelor, perhaps b. c. 1795-1805 at an unknown location, who m. Susannah Joslin, widow, on 23 Sep 1829; witnesses George Benton (parish Clerk) and Elizabeth Prentice. Both were called "of Canewdon Parish". They had (per Kerry Prentice, 2 Apr 2003):
