Update of 31 May 2004: Although additional investigation is needed for confirmation, Joseph Prentis is likely the son of Thaddeus Prentice of Towanda, Bradford Co., PA and a descendant of Robert Prentice of Roxbury, MA.

1. Joseph Prentis was b. c. 1807 in PA. He appears in the 1850 census in Mehoopany, Wyoming Co., PA and in the 1860 census in Osceola, Polk Co., WI with his wife, Wealthy, b. c. 1812, PA. Wealthy appears without her husband in the 1870 Osceola census. Children:

  1. Esther M. Prentis, b. c. 1832, PA, and d. 1855, probably in Mehoopany, Wyoming Co., PA. She m. William S. Heath. He was b. c. 1852, PA, son of William and Mary Heath. Children per Scott Sickler, email, 2 Aug 2009, and 1860 census in Mehoopany:
    1. Sherman Heath, b. c. 1852, PA. At home in 1860.
    2. Richard Heath, b. c. 1853, PA. At home in 1860.

    If Esther d. in 1855, then William Heath appears in the 1860 census with a 2nd wife, Mary, also b. c. 1832, PA, and an additional son:

    1. George Heath, b. c. 1859, PA. At home in 1860.

    William and Mary appear in the 1905 State Census in Sioux, Plymouth Co., IA, with their children: Sherman, LeRoy and Harvey.

  2. Sarah Prentis, b. c. 1834, PA.

  3. Thadeus Prentis, b. c. 1836, PA. 1860 census as Thadeus Prentice in Hastings, Dakota Co., MN, with his wife, Lodeska, b. c. 1840, PA. Children:
    1. Park Prentice, b. c. 1859, MN. At home in 1860 and 1880. Not in 1900 and later census.
    Thadeus Prentis may have d. before 1860 as his wife appears in the 1880 census in Clayton, Polk Co., WI. as Lodusker Lawrence. b. c. 1840, PA (father b. in Scotland and mother in PA).with her husband, R. D. Lawrence, b. c. 1843, NY (father b. in Germany and mother in NY).

2. Worthy A. Prentice, b. c. 1847, PA and d. c. 1939. At home in 1850 census in Mehoopany, Wyoming Co., PA. He appears in the 1880 Clayton, Polk Co., WI census with his wife, Julia A., b. c. 1862, PA. They also appear in the 1930 Clayton census. His Civil War service record is as follows: Enlisted as a Private on 13 March 1865 Enlisted in Company D, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Wisconsin on 13 March 1865. Mustered out Company D, 2nd Cavalry Regiment Wisconsin on 15 November 1865 in Austin, TX."

The town of Clayton was organized 10 Nov 1875, and the first supervisors were Morris De'Golier, Worthy Prentice and H. D. West. His home was a log house. Worthy is also the author of "Reminiscences of early pioneer days in Polk County" which can be found at the The State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Lawrence m. 2nd Roberta Rose Williams and have two chidren:
