Frank H. Prentiss of Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA

Frank H. Prentiss of Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 12 May 2009

Update of 12 May 2009: Frank H. Prentice is #39.2 in our Henry Prentice eBook. That material now replaces this article.

1. Frank H. Prentice was b. Aug 1846 in MA. He first appears as a 4 year old child (b. c. 1846) in the 1850 Cohasset, Norfolk Co., MA census in the home of Mathew Rawson, b.c. 1806, his wife, Mary, b. c. 1805, and 6 Rawson children ranging in age from 5 to 17 years of age.

Living next door to them in the 1850 census is the family of John Prentiss (a descendant of Henry Prentice of Cambridge, MA) b. c. 1810, his wife, Leah, b. c. 1810, and children:

  1. Sarah J. Prentiss, b. c. 1836
  2. Ruth B. Prentiss, b. c. 1838
  3. William H. Prentiss, b. c. 1841
  4. Samuel Prentiss, b. c. 1849.

One might hypothesize that Mary Rawson had previously been married to a Mr. Prentiss and that Frank was a son of that prior marriage. One might also hypothesize that Mary was the wife of Enos Prentice, #39.1 in our Henry Prentice eBook.

Frank later appears in the 1870 census in Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA, and in the 1880 and 1900 Norfolk Co. census, with his wife, Annie M., b Aug 1848, MA. Frank was a worker in a boot factory. Children per census records:

  1. Annie L. Prentiss, b. c. 1867, MA. At home in 1870 and 1880. Not home in 1900.
  2. Clara F. Prentiss, b. c. 1869, MA. At home in 1870 and 1880. Not home in 1900.
  3. Louis V. Prentiss, b. Nov 1878, MA. . . . . . . [2]
  4. Mary A. Prentiss, b. c. 1879, MA. At home in 1880 but not 1900.
  5. Frank I. Prentiss, b. Sep 1886, MA. . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  6. Inez Prentiss, b. Jun 1888, MA.

2. Louis V. Prentiss, b. Nov 1878, MA. Not in 1920 census. He appears in the 1930 Weymouth, Norfolk Co., MA census, as an Engineer. His marital status is unclear on the microfilm record, but it seems to indicate he was then a widower.

3. Frank I. Prentiss, b. 25 Sep 1886, MA and d. Mar 1970, Park Ridge, Cook Co., IL (per SSDI). He appears in the 1920 and 1930 census in Chicago, Cook Co., IL, with his wife, Ruth, b. c. 1892, and children:

  1. Lester K. Prentiss, b. 30 Oct 1912, MA, and d.31 Mar 1988 in Des Plaines, Cook Co., IL.
  2. Ruth A. Prentiss, b. c. 1915.
