Update of 19 Nov 2009: Ralph Hodd's email of 18 Nov 2009 also identifies Richard's parents as Robert Prentice and Mary. They appear to be the same persons as #3 in our Fall 1999 article entitled Richard Prentice of London, England . That article now replaces this article.

1. Unknown Prentice may have been b. c. 1810-1817, perhaps in London, England, and d. before 1851 when his wife appears without her husband in 1851 and as a widow in the 1861 Hammersmith, London, census.

    Note: By email of 18 Nov 2009, Ralph Hodd, a descendant of Alfred Prentice's son, Charles, identified "Unknown Prentice" as Richard Prentice, bap. 24 Oct 1802, St. Luke's Chelsea, and says that he m. Sarah in 1837 at Chelsea, London, and that in 1842 he was a "carman living at 5 Avery Farm Row, Ebury Square, Belgave, Middlesex. Ebury Square lies perhaps a half mile ENE of Chelsea and perhaps 2 miles east of Hammersmith. Richard does not appear in the 1841 or 1851 census.

    Ralph Hodd also identifies Richard's parents as Robert Prentice and Mary. They appear to be the same persons as #3 in our Fall 1999 article entitled Richard Prentice of London, England .

    he says Sarah's maiden name was Sarah Hope, bap. at PangbourneBerkshire, on 15.Jul 1816, and that herparents were John and Sarah Hope.

He m. Sarah, b. c. 1817-1818, Pangbourne, Berkshire. She appears without her husand in the 1851 Hammersmith census and and as a widow in the 1961 Hammersmith, London, census:

Sarah might be Sarah Berkins who is shown in the 1841 census as b. c. 1816, unmarried, and living in Pangbourne, Berkshire. The only Prentice shown in the 1841 Berkshire census is John Prentis, b. c. 1815 in Berkshire, and the most likely candidate to be the husband of Sarah Berkins. Children:

  1. Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1842, London, Middlesex, per 1851 census. She is not shown at home in the 1861 census and may be the same person as Mary Anne, below.
  2. Mary Anne Prentice, b. c. 1842, Hammersmith, London. At home in 1861.
  3. Sarah Prentice, b. c. 1844, Hammersmith, London. At home in 1851 and 1861.
  4. William Prentice, b. c. 1853, Hammersmith, London. At home in 1861
  5. Alfred William Prentice, b. c. 1855, Starch Green, Hammersmith, London. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. Alfred Prentice was b. 1855 in Starch Green, Hammersmith, London. Middlesex. He does not appear in the IGI, but does appear in the 1881 census as an "Excavator (Navvy)" living at 3 Lavinia Ter Starch Green Rd., Hammersmith, London, and in the 1901 census of Fulham, Hammersmith, London as a Bricklayers Labourer with his wife and family.
