1. John Prentice was b. c. 1630-50 and d. in 1712 in Lowestoft which lies on the coast, about 100 miles NE of London. John was a Mariner and left a Will in which he refers to his ship, "The Norfolk". He m. Jane of Warsham near Harwich. His descendants might include the following person who may have been either a grandson or great-grandson:

  1. (perhaps) John Prentice II, b. c. 1751. . . . . . . . [2]

2. John Prentice II is tentatively identified as a possible descendant of John Prentice, #1, above; however, additional research is needed to confirm such relationship. John Prentice II was b. c. 1751, d. 1836 at the age of 85 and was bur. 3 Mar 1836 at St. Nichlas, Harwich (Ref: PR). John was a Breeches Maker of Harwich.

He m., as her 3rd husband, the widow Ann (Narborough) Clarke at Harwich St. Nicholas by Marriage License dated 12 Jan 1776 (Ref: License; PR). Ann was b. 17 Feb 1739, Harwich and was the dau. of Flint Narborough and Ann Potter who were m. 29 Nov 1729 at St. Nicholas Parish, Norwich, Essex (Ref: PR and IGI).

John and Ann had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Stephen Prentice, b. c. 1777. . . . . . . [3]

3. Stephen Prentice was b. c. 1777 in Harwich and d. 22 Jan 1852 in Harwich at the age of 75 (Ref: PR). He was bur. 25 Jan 1852 at St. Nicholas, Harwich (Ref: PR). Stephen was a Mariner in Harwich, Essex and Dovr, Kent. and also worked as a saddler when not at sea. In 1845 he was working as a saddler at Dover, Kent and in 1851 as a Mariner at Harwich (Ref: PR.; 1851 Census).

Stephen m. Frances Weaver on 28 Oct 1799 with Banns at Harwich St. Nicholas (Ref: PR). Frances was b. c. 1779 in Harwich (Ref: 1851 census). Children of Stephan and Frances Prentice:

  2. Frances Weaver Prentice, b. 11 May 1803, Harwich, bap. there 1 Aug 1804 at the Bathside Congregational, and bur. 14 Feb 1832 at Harwich St. Nicholas, age 29 (Ref: PR; Non Con. Register). She m. William English on 23 Aug 1825 at Harwich, St. Nicholas with Banns (Ref: PR). William was a Mariner at Harwich. They had 3 children.

  3. Elizabeth Ann Prentice, b. 28 Oct 1805, Harwich.

  4. Emily Sarah Prentice, b. 9 Oct 1816 and chr. 11 Oct 1819, Bathside Congregational (Ref Non Con. Register). She m. Daniel Smith on 8 May 1845 in Dover, St. James. Daniel was a Mariner in Dover, Kent and Agricultural Bailiff at River, Kent. He was b. c. 1821 in Alkham, Kent and was the son of Daniel Smith. They appear in the 1871 census in River, Kent, and in the 1881 census in Ewell and Lydden, Kent. Children:
    1. William H. Smith, b. c. 1850. At home in River in 1871 census. He appears in the 1881 census in Maidstone, Kent, with his wife, Mary A., b. c. 1853, Bolton, Lancashire. They had 1 or more children, including:
      1. Frederick S. Smith, b. c. 1880, Dover, Kent. At home in 1881.
    2. Emily/Emely Smith, b. c. 1857, River, Kent. At home in 1881 census.
    3. Frederick P. Smith, b. c. 1857. At home in River in 1871 census. He is a single Lodger in the 1881 census in Minton in Milton, Kent.
    4. Henry Smith, b. c. 1860. At home in River in 1871 census. He is a single Boarder in the 1881 census in Ashford, Kent.
    5. Eliza Smith, b. c. 1862, River, Kent. At home in River in 1871 census. At home in 1881 census.

  5. Edmund James Prentice b. 25 Aug 1819 in Harwich and d. c. Sept 1898, Ipswich, Suffolk. . . . . . . . . . . [4]

  6. Caroline Prentice, b. 26 Sept 1821 and chr. 22 Jul 1822, Bathside Congregational, Harwich, Essex (per Non. Con. Register). She m. Ody Wenham who was b. c. 1814, Hellingly, Sussex. She may be the Caroline Prentice shown in the 1861 census as a Servant in Charlton and Dover, Kent. She may also be the Caroline Prentice shown in the 1871 census in Eastbourne, Sussex, as single, b. c. 1822, Harwich.

3.1 Stephen Prentice, b. 17 Feb 1801 Harwich. Subject to further confirmation, he is tentatively identified as Stephen John Prentice who appears in the 1841 census and d. 1870, St. Olave Roherhithe, Southwark, London. Stephen was a Mariner in 1838 and lived at 21 East Lane, St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. He appears in the 1841 census census in St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey. In 1851 census in Bermondsey, Surrey.He might be the Stephen Prentice shown in the 1861 census as a Boatswain, single, aboard a shop "Off Tower of London, Thames River, London."

He m. Sophia Bacon on 5 Aug 1835, Saint Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, England. She was b. 1811-1813, Great Oakley, Essex, per 1841 & 1851 census), and d. Sep 1892, S. Olave, Rotherhithe, Southwark. London. Stephen was a Mariner in 1838 and lived at 21 East Lane, St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. She appears, without her husband, in the 1881 census in Rotherhithe as a visitor in the home of George Allen Lulham and h is wife, Elizabeth Jane; her relationship to them, if any, is unknown.

Stephen and Sophia had 2 or more children, including:

3.2 Stephen John Prentice, bap 21 May 1837, St Mary's Rotherhithe, London, Surrey, and d. Dec 1914, St. Georges in the East, London. He appears in the 1841 census in St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey and 1851 census, Bermondsey, Surrey.

He m. (unknown) Dec 1859, St. Lukes, Chelsea, London. Children:

  1. Stephen John Prentice, b. Dec 1860, St Georges in the East, London; d. there Sep 1861.

3.3 William Prentice, b. 9 Aug 1838 and bap. 16 Sep 1838 - 21 East Street, St Mary Magdelen Bermondsey, Surrey (sub-district of St James Bermondsey) (per Kerry Prentice, email, 4 Jul 2002). He d. Dec 1899, St. Olave, Rotherhithe, London.

He may, or may not, be the William Prentice shown in the 1881 census as living at 31 Princes St., Rotherhithe and b. c. 1840 at Bermondsey, with his wife, Harriet Jones/Hyland who he m. Mar 1874, St. Olave, Rotherhithe, London. She was b. c. 1840, Beaumont, Essex, and children:

  1. William Edmund Prentice, b. Dec 1874, St. Olave, Rotherhithe, Southwark, London and d. that same month.
  2. Edith Harriet Prentice, b. Jun 1876, Rotherhithe, Surrey. At home in 1881.
  3. William Edmund Prentice, b. Dec 1877, Rotherhithe, Surrey. Died Dec. 1894, St. Olave, Rotherhithe
  4. George H. Prentice, b. c. 1880, Rotherhithe, Surrey. In the 1901 census lived in Rotherhithe and was called a "Carman."
  5. Frederick Stephen Prentice, b. Sep 1882, St. Olave, Rotherhithe, Surrey. In the 1901 census he lived in Rotherhithe and was called a "Celler Porter."

4. Edmund James Prentice, b. 25 Aug 1819, Harwich, and chr. 11 Oct 1819 at Bathside Congregational, Harwich, Essex (per Non. Con. Register). He d. C. Sept 1898 at Ipswich, Suffolk, at the age of 79. He was a Master Mariner. He appears in the 1851 census in Harwich St. Nicholas, Essex, with his wife and family.

Edmund m. Mary Ann Amelia Francis on 30 Jan 1846 in St. Nicholas, Harwich, Essex (Ref: PR). She was b. c. 1824 at Thorpe-Le-Soken, Essex (Ref 1881 census). She was a daughter of James Francis, a labourer in Harwich in 1846 (Ref: PR). She d. c. Jun 1896 at the age of 72 at Ipswich. She is probably the same person as the Mary Prentice, a married woman, was b. c. 1825, Thorpe, Essex, who appears without her husband in the 1861 census in Ipswich St. Peter, Suffolk.

Children of Edmund and Mary Ann Prentice:

  1. Marie Prentice, b. c. 1840, Thorp, Essex. At home in 1851. Not home in 1861.
  2. Edmund Francis Prentice, b. 27 Oct 1846, Harwich, and d. the following year and bur. 26 Aug 1847, St. Nicholas, Harwich (Ref: PR).

  3. William Stephen Prentice, b. 27 Oct 1846, Harwich and d. 1931, Ipswich (Ref: PR) He m. Mary Ann Maisey in 1872 in Stroud area. William and his wife appear in the 1891 census in Stowupland, Suffolk. Not in 1901 census. They had 1 or more children, including:
    1. Marcus M. Prntice, b. c. 1873, Rodborough, Gloucestershire, England. At home in 1891. Not in 1901 census.

  4. Rosanna Frances Prentice, b. 10 Sep 1848, Harwich, and d. the following year and bur. 22 Aug 1849, St. Nicholas, Harwich (RFef: PR).

4.1. Robert H. Prentice was b. c. 1859, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. At home in 1861 census. He appears in the 1881 census living at 59 Albert Rd., Hedworth Monkton & Jarrow, Durham, England, as an "Engine Fitter At Works" with his wife and daughter, Ethel.

He m. Mary, b. c. 1860, Howdon, Northumberland. She appears in the 1891 census in the County of Cardiff, Civil Parish of Canton, , Municipal Borough of Cardiff, Municipal Ward of Cardiff. She is called a "wife" but no husband is shown. In the 1901 census in Canton, Glamorgan, Wales, Mary appears without her husband. Children per 1881, 1891 and 1901 census:

5. Edmund Francis Prentice, b. 25 May 1850, Kings Quay Street, Harwich, Essex and d. 26 Apr 1908 Coatham, Yorkshire, England (Ref: PR). Called Edmond in the 1851 census and Edward in the 1861 census. At home in 1851 and 1861.His occupation was that of an Architect; Building Clerk of Works. At time of marriage in 1872, Edmund Francis Prentice was living at Clacton-On-Sea, Essex and Hannah Greenard at: St. Margaret's, Ipswich

He m. Hannah Greenard on 30 Oct 1872 St. Margaret's, Ipswich, Suffolk (Ref: PR). She was b. 1850, Sweffling, Suffolk (Ref: 1881 census). She d. 30 Jan 1923 at her home at Headingly, Leeds, Yorkshire (Ref: PR). Hannah was the daughter of Samuel Greenard of Bruisyard, Suffolk and Sarah Chapman of Great Glemham, Suffolk.. They had 6 children:

6. Ernest Edmund Robert Prentice, b. 1874, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland (Ref: 1881 census, 1901 census).

He m. Margaret Robinson in Hartlepool, Durham. Ernest E.R. Prentice was a marine engineer. He died before 1957. Children of Ernest and Margaret Prentice:

  1. Edmund George Prentice, b. c. Jun 1898, Hartlepool, Durham (Ref Prenticenet list of UK births). He was declared missing 6 May 1918 at Ypres Salient, World War I. Edmund was a Lance Corporal, 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment. He was awarded the Military Medal for Gallantry MM. His name is listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaaderen, Belgium (Ref: Commonwealth War Graves Commission).
  2. Olive Louisa Prentice, b. c. Dec 1900, Hartlepool, Durham and d. aft. 1957 (ref: ibid). She m. Mr. Stephenson.
  3. Winifred ElizabethPrentice, b. c. Mar 1904, Hartlepool, Durham and d. aft. 1957 (Ref: ibid).
  4. Margaret L. Prentice, b. c. Mar 1911, Middlesbrough and d. aft. 1957 (Ref: ibid). She m. Leonard Speed, a chemist.

7. Edmund Eugune Prentice, b. 12 February 1885, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England and d. 4 Jul 1935, South Bend, IN, USA (Ref PR). Edmund was an Accountant, Finance Executive.

Edmund m. Annie Medd on 20 Jun 1914 at the Wesleyan Church, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorkshire, England. Annie was born 12 Apr 1885 in Saltburn-by -the-Sea, Yorkshire and died 10 Dec 1965 in Dodgeville, WI, USA (Ref: PR). Annie was the daughter of George Medd of Castleton, Yorkshire and Helen Agar of Redcar, Yorkshire. At the time of their marriage, Edmund lived in Leeds, Yorkshire, and Annie lived at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorkshire.

In 1923, while living in Monkseaton, Eaton, Edmund and his family decided to emigrated to the United States on the White Star Line SS Regina, arriving in the Port of New York, March 27, 1923 (Ref: American Family Immigration Center: Explore your Family History at Ellis Island). Ellis Island records that his declared intention was to see his brother in law, Mr. W. Herbert, 832 N. Main St., South Bend, IN. Edmund gave his occupation as "Accountant" and was described as 5' 6", dark complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes. Annie was then 5" 1", fair complexion, brown hair and gray eyes. His wife identified her brother as Mr. A. Medd, Upleatham Road, Saltburn/Sea, England. Accompanying them was their son:

  1. (son) Prentice, b. c. 1920, Longbenton, Northumberland and living in 2008. He married and had 2 daughters. They, and a daughter, now live in MO. The other daughter lives in KY.

All three later appear in the 1930 census in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN.
