Archibald Prentice of Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland

Archibald Prentice of Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland

By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2002 and Revised 7 Jan 2014

Update of 7 Mar 2009: There is a good chance that he is the son of James Prentice and Marion Waddell who are #4.31 in our Fall 2000 article entitled John Prentice, The Laird of Stone.

With the valued help of Christine Hadden containing information from the North Lanarkshire Cemetery Dept. on burials at the Old Manse Cemetery, we are helping Alison Sullivan in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Archibald Prentice. The 1851 census in West Calder shows him as a retired farmer, b. c. 1767, Carluke. (The 1841 census says b. c. 1771.) His 1841 address was Back of Moss, West Calder. He apparently was a widower and was living with his daughter, Agnes, and her son, Absalom Cannedy (b. c. 1844, West Calder) and a graddaughter, Janet Cadden (b. c. 1845, "N R, Renfrewshire).

He m. Janet Graham. Archibald might be the same person as the Archibald Prentice shown in the (1851?) Cambusnethan census as age, 72, living by himself. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Archibald Prentice, chr. 12 Apr 1808, Cambusnethan. . . . . . [20]
  2. Hugh Prentice, b. c. 1810. . . . . . . . . . . . . [30]
  3. Agnes Prentice, b. c. 1814 in Cambusnethan, and d. 19 Jan 1901, Whitburn (per Jane Howat, email, 28 Sep 2011). Agnes' parentage is confirmed in her death certificate. Agnes m. David Tweedie on 31 Dec 1852 at West Calder but prior to this she had a son, Absalom Kennedy.
In the 1851 census Agnes is living with her father, Archibald, a retired farmer, at Back Moss, West Calder with her son Absalom and David Tweedie (who was described as a weekly lodger). Archibald is said to be 84 and b. c. 1767 in Carluke. On the basis that this is the right Archibald, then he is also at Back Moss, West Calder in the 1841 census where (aged 70) he is living with Janet Prentice (aged 60) and John Prentice (aged 20).
  4. Janet Prentice, b. c. 1822 in West Calder (per Moira Sullivan, citing Janet's death certificate) and d. 9 Jan 1892 in Greenock. Janet m. Thomas Cranston on both 7 Aug 1847 in Lanark and on 8 Aug 1847 in West Calder, probably their respective parishes. Thomas was b. c. 1817 in Carnwath and d. 24 Mar 1880 in Greenock. Thomas was a teacher of navigation. Known children (per Moira Sullivan, email, 24 & 29 Dec 2002):
    1. David Cranston, chr. 17 Dec 1848, Lanark. David m. Marion Auld in Shanghai and had 8 surviving children, including Thomas Prentice Cranston.
(David is Moira's ancestor. By email of 8 Feb 2003, Moira advises that her Canston line married a Paton and tracing that lineage upwards gets her to John Scott and Grizzel/Grace Prentice who appear in our Spring 2003 issue about John Prentice of Carluke.)
    2. Thomas Cranston, b. 20 Nov 1856, Greenock. He reached adulthood.
    3. Archibald Cranston, b. 7 Oct 1859 and d. 28 Sep 1860, Greenock.

The GST Road (Great Southern Trunk Road) leads from the airport past Trident Hotel to Kathipara roundabout - there is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission road direction sign on a small triangular island showing the way to the cemetery via Mount Poonamall Road, passing at the foot of St. Thomas Mount. The cemetery can easily be located on the right hand side of the road 1 kilometre from St. Thomas Mount. From Madras Central Railway Station the route is up Mount Road (Anna Selai) and over the bridge which crosses the River Cooun. The route passes St. Mary's Cemetery on Pallawan Road and is via LIC building (Life Insurance Corporation Building) situated on Mount Road, which leads to Anna Flyover and to Kathipara Junction.

This cemetery was created by the Imperial War Graves Commission to receive 1939-1945 War graves from many civil and cantonment cemeteries in the south and east of India where their permanent maintenance could not be assured. At the far end of the main path from the entrance, is the Madras 1914-1918 War Memorial consisting of a wall bearing the names of one thousand servicemen who died during the 1914-1918 War who lie in many civil and cantonment cemeteries in various parts of India, where it is not possible to maintain their graves in perpetuity.

Who are Archibald Prentice's Parents?

Archibald Prentice may be the Archibald Prentice, b. 5 Oct 1755 in Cambusnethan, son of Thomas Prentice and Agnes Forrest (see our Fall 1999 article on Thomas Prentice of Cambusnethan). Archibald would have been 53 when Archibald, #2, above, was born but that is within the realm of possibility.

REVIEWER'S NOTE:In the previous paragraph, I'm not sure who Archibald, #2, above is referring to. If anyone has some thoughts, please let me know. --Scott Prentice

And Thomas Prentice may be the son of John Prentice and Marion Whitelaw (see our Fall 2001 article on John Prentice of Carluke).
