1. James Peter Prentice, b. 4 Jul 1812, Waltham, Lanarkshire, Scotland (per 1851 census), and died 17 Aug 1881 in Greenup, Cumberland Co., IL. He is buried in the Prentice Cemetery.

In the discussion of the Prentice Cemetery, the book says that James came to America about 1838 (but see footnote at bottom). It is unknown if any parents or siblings accompanied him, but according to the book, he had a cousin named Shiels (probably John Shiels says the book) who was living in NY. ( See Fn. 4)

John was a farmer, stone mason, wagon maker and worked for what was later Penn-Central railroad. Donna Weisman's email of 16 Sep 2011 relates that "James Prentice was buying land in Cumberland Co. prior to 1838 and continued through 1850 accumulating over 125 acres of land."

James married, first, Jane Thompson (but see Fn. 1). She was b. 23 Dec 1821 in England, d. 21 Dec 1851 in Cumberland Co., and buried in the Prentice Cemetery (see below). It is unclear where they were married. It might have been in NY since the 1850 Greenup, Cumberland Co., IL census shows his oldest son, James, as born in NY.

Note: We do not know when Jane came to America, but we know that her daughter, Elizabeth, was b. in 1843 in NY. On the chance that she was still in England at the time of the 1841 England census, we checked that census at Ancestry.com to see if we could find her. The name, "Jane Thompson," was very common and we found too many. The 1841 census shows over 20 women named Jane Thompson b. in 1821 in England. Jane was in America by 1843, so we could compare those names with the 1850 England census, but it's probable the great majority of them were married, and some died, so an absence of a particular Mary Thompson wouldn't tell us much.

The book relates that James and his cousin, Shiels, walked to Greenup, IL from NY carrying their tools and all they owned (but see Fn. 3). James and his family moved to Cumberland Co. by 1847 since his daughter, Ellen, was born there about 1847. According to the book:

"Nancy Grubb, Martin Thomas and James Prentice were perhaps the first to locate in this section [14]. They came in 1838 and 1839. Nancy Grubb and Martin Thomas, so far as we can learn, did not remain here long and have no descendants here now [in 1968]. The land obtained by James Prentice was in the eastern part of section 14.

"After the discovery of gold in California, Prentice, with a team of oxen drove out west. There he came across a man lately from his home neighborhood who was much out of luck. Just who this man was we are not sure. it was either Martin Thomas or the man to whom Thomas had sold his land back here. Some think it was a Mr. Holt but no relative to the Holts who came here later. To this man Mr. Prentice gave aid. For this favor he gave Mr. Prentice the 40 acre field that is now owned by Forest Fisher. This was about 1851. ( See Fn. 5)

"Prentice Cemetery is located on the farm owned by Dean Sutherland, about 1 mile south down the old Mill Road and through the Penn-Central overpass, and a little west of Greenup, Greenup Twp., Cumberland Co., IL and about one quarter mile east, back in a field, at the edge of a woodland. The stoned have been nice and big, but are toppled over now and become overgrown with vines and undergrowth.... This cemetery is located on the farm that was owned by James Peter Prentice"

Who are the parents of James Prentice, b. 4 Jun 1722?

Although we have James Prentice as b. 4 Jun 1722 in Carluke, there seems a good chance that he might be the James Prenties shown in Glasgow christening records as chr. 11 Mar 1722, Carluke, son of John Prenties. John Prenties, in turn, might be the John Prentis shown in Glasgow records as chr. 25 Jan 1702, Carluke, son of James Prentis.

Fn. 1: Pam Medlam said she received information from Mrs Thelma Maxine Jones, 16044 Dodson Rd. NW., Ephrata, Wa. 98823, Phone 1-509-787-4008, saying that James had a prior marriage to Jane Cassels, b. c. 1819 in Carluke. Neither that prior marriage, nor Jane Cassells, is metioned in the book entitled, "James Peter Prentice, The Little Scotchman" which is the basis of this article.

It also seems inconsistent with a death record showing that James Prentice, b. 27 Jan 1808, Farmer and husband of a Jane Cassels, died at a Hamilton St. residence in 1875 in Carluke. Additional investigation is needed.

Fn. 2: By email of 1 Nov 2000, Connie Bushue relates that on James Peter Prentice's headstone, it identifies William as the son of James and his 1st wife, Jane and says that William died in 1852, not 1853.

Fn. 3: The book's statement that James and his cousin, Shiels, walked to Greenup, IL from NY carrying their tools and all they owned need examining. If James was married in NY and had 2 small children at the time, it seems unlikely that all would have walked that distance. It also seems somewhat unlikely James would have left a wife and 2 small children in NY while he and his cousin walked to IL.

Fn. 4: By letter of 23 Dec 2002, Donna Weisman relates that there is in the local cemetery a headstone for a J. T. Shiels who d. 28 Dug 1882, age 72 years, 4 mos., 26 days. That would indicate a birth date within a year of James Peter's birth. This might be the cousin with whom he traveled from NY to IL.

Fn. 5: By letter of 23 Dec 2002, Donna Weisman relates that the information about Mr. Holt and the 40 acres was recently confirmed by a Mr. Feltner, now in his 90's, who knew of the transaction.

Fn. 6: By email of 8 Oct 2006, Rosie R. Sutherland relates her research establishing the ancestry of James Peter Prentice. It reads, in part, as follows:

"Hello Joe, we have corresponded before when I was seeking info on James Peter Prentice. I have come a long way since our first encounter. I have a friend from Sheffield England in the Family History center, his name is Rick Prentice. He responded to my query about James Peter and asked what info I had. Come to find out the info passed down in the family about James' parents being John and Margaret Duncan was incorrect. Rick researched for me and being that the family of John and Margaret never immegrated, they could NOT be the parents of our James.

He took it steps further and discovered our Prentice family were farmers on the Muir Lea Farm and resided around Bigger, Libberton and Walston. When we went to Scotland and England over the summer of 2003, Rick took us to the Walston church where we found the graves of James (b.1743 d. 10/05/1815) and his wife Ellen Pennycook (c.1751 d.04/06/1786). Their son John Prentice (c11/09/1780 d.28/03/1854) and his wife Jean Hogg (c.19/08/1781 d. 12/10/1855). This John and Jean are the parents of our James Peter Prentice (c. 04/07/1812). John and Jean also had 5 other children which I have dates on.

I am still confused about 2 points in my searching the James Peter Prentice family. He and his first wife Jane Thompson in moving through to Illinois where they finally resided, had a daughter Elizabeth born 28/06/1843 died 06/07/1886. I cannot find out where in NY she was born. Another point of interest is that according to family writings James married Jane's twin sister Lorinda after Jane's death. They both share a same birthdate and maiden names, but one was born in England and the other born in NY. They could not be sisters given the different birthplaces....OR....they could be sisters but different years of birth. We cannot trace anything on these 2 women but I believe they were not twins. So I've just let it lie for a while and got on with my life. Sometime when I have time again I will see what I can find. I have gotten a lot of info from my email message board. I like that people are still contacting me with info. If I can share any other dates or info I will be happy to do that. Rosey
