Charles Prentice of Grand Forks, Grand Forks Co., North Dakota
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor

Should that be George Prentice?

1. Charles Prentice may have been b. c. 1850-1865 at an unknown location, but perhaps NY. He d. in the winter pf 1908-1909 at an unknown location, but perhaps in, or near, Grand Forks, Grand Forks Co., North Dakota. (Ref: John Casall, email, 19 Jul 2010)

He m. Unknown. They had 1 or more children, including:

A genforum genealogy.com posting by Dolores Hamphell on 7 Oct 2001 related to Lucy Laura Prentice & John Bacon, probably the same persons discussed above.

Looking for any information about Lucy Laura Prentice (b abt 1883) of Grand Forks abt 1905. Married John Bacon [on 14 Apr 1906, Grand Forks, ND, Lic. #-391 per John Casall, email, 23 Jul 2010]; b abt 1862 in the US. They lived Grand Forks, ND early 1900s (definitely 1907). Had 2 children, Lillian Bacon (b c 1906) & Charles Percy Bacon (b 7/20/1907 in Grand Forks). Lucy died sometime before 1918, when Charles and Lillian were adopted and took the name Hackett. They had been placed in North Dakota Children's Home Society by John after Lucy died.

Reportedly, John later remarried and had another family. He lived Alberta 1936.

Who are Charles Prentice's Parents

No Charles Prentice appears in the 1900 ND census.

We do see at least 1 possibility for the identification of Charles, his wife and family. The 1910 census in Grand Forks shows the following family:

Katy Prentice, a widow, b. c. 1856 in Canada English with her father b. in NY and mother in VA. She emigrated to the US in 1860. She has 3 children:

  1. Hilda Prentice, b. c. 1892, ND, with her father b. in NY.
  2. Alice Prentice, b. c. 1894, ND, with her father b. in NY.
  3. Raymond Prentice, b. c. 1897, ND, with his father b. in NY.

A posting on Ancestry.com shows that family to be as follows:

George Prentice (not Charles Prentice), b. c. 1838, NY, and d. c. 1907 in ND.

He m. Katherine Page, b. c. 1856, Canada, and d. 26 Feb 1922, MN. Although her husband is called "John Prentice", she is probably the person mentioned in the following obituary:

    Grand Forks Herald 1922-3-5 ND
    To Bury Aged Pioneer Here
Mrs. Katherine Prentice Dies In Minnesota; Here Forty Years

Mrs. Katherine Prentice, for about forty years a resident of Grand Forks died Thursday at Hawley, Minn. The body arrived here last night, and funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Monday morning from St. Mary's church.

Mrs. Prentice was 73 years of age and the greater part of her life was lived in Grand Forks and vicinity. For a number of years she resided in a little home on the bank of the Red river, back of the Gotzian block.

John Prentice (sic), husband of the deceased, died here a number of years ago, and about a year ago Mrs. Prentice moved to Hawley, Minn. While there were five children, three daughters and two sons, none of them now reside here.

Children of George and Katherine:

  1. Hattie Prentice, b. c. 1874 (The birth year may be in error and she may be the dau., mentioned in the obituary, above, who m. John Bacon.)
