1. Alexander N. Prentice was b. c. 1879 in Scotland, obtained his SS# in CA, and d. Jan 1967 in CA (per SSDI). At some date before 1908, he emigrated to Canada where he married and had 2 children, and in 1916 emigrated to the United States.
He m. Viola G. Reid, b. c. 1884 in Canada. They appear in the 1920 census in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI, and in the 1930 census in San Diego, CA, where his occupation is described as "Real Estate." Children:
- Gordon Neilson Prentice, b. 25 Sep 1907, Canada, and d. 13 Mar 1989, Escondido, San Diego Co., CA (per SSDI). At home in 1930.
- John/Jack R. Prentice, b. c. 1910, Canada. At home in 1930
Since Alexander was b. c. 1879 in Scotland, we checked the 1881 Scotland census to see if it showed him and his parents. They seem not to appear, suggesting that his family might have moved to England. We did find an Ann Prentice in the 1881 census in Tadcaster East, Yorkshire. She was b. c. 1856 in Scotland and is called "married" and a "Seaman's Wife" but he was not shown at home, perhaps being at sea. They had at least 2 children:
- John Prentice, b. c. 1879, Ireland.
- Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1880, Scotland.
It is unclear whether that is the same Alexander Prentice who is the subject of this article.
No appropriate Alexander Prentice appears in the 1880, 1900 or 1910 U.S. census.
