Ray Prentice of Illinois and Vallejo, Solano Co., CA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 31 May 2008

Update of 31 May 2008: Ray Prentice is #3 in our Spring 2003 article entitled Frederick Ray Prentice, Hancock Co., IL . That article now replaces this article.

We are helping Matt Prentice in tracing his family roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Ray Prentice was b. Sep 1850 in IL (father b. in NY and mother in KY per 1900 census). He first appears in the 1900 census in Vallejo, Solano Co., CA with his wife, Mary E., b. Apr 1860 in CA. Children:

  1. Ada R. Prentice, b. Oct 1886, CA. At home in 1900 census.
  2. Ora M. Prentice, b. Apr 1888. CA. At home in 1900 census. She m. William J. Martess who was b. c. 1877, India. In the 1920 census they are living with her mother, Mary, in Vallejo, Solano Co., CA.
  3. Fay Prentice, dau., b. Jul 1898, CA. At home in 1900 census.

Who are Ray Prentice's Parents?

A search of the 1850 census and IGI does not disclose any Ray or Raymond Prentice b. c. 1850 in IL. We did, however, find a Zachariah Prentice and his brother, Charles Prentice, both b. c. 1857 in CA, in the 1870 San Francisco census. Their relationship to Elton is unknown.

We also found a Ray Prentice shown in the 1850 census whose age was given as "1" in the 1850 census in Appanoose, Hancock Co., IL. That could indicate a birth date of 1848 or 1849. Although those dates are before the "Sep 1850" date given in the 1900 census, it is possible that the person providing that information erred about Ray's birth year. That Ray Prentice appears in our Spring 2003 article about Frederick R. Prentice of Hancock Co., IL
