Update of 23 Mar 2011: John F. Prentice, aka Tyrd/Tyra Prentice, is #9 in our Winter 2008 article entitled William Prentice of NY and MS . That later article now replaces this article.

There is some confusion about his name. He appears in the 1910 census as John F. Prentis, but in the 1920 census as Tyrd J. Prentice, and in the 1930 census as T. J. Prentiss. For now, we will note all 3 name variations:

1. John F. Prentis (aka Tyrd J, Prentice and T. J. Prentiss) was b. c. 1879 in Mississippi, as were his parents. He appear in the 1910 Washington Co., LA census with his wife and family. He appears in the 1920 and 1930 census in Leakesville, Greene Co., MA.

He m. Hester(?) (called "Vesta" in 1920), b. c. 1882 in Alabama, and children:

  1. George R Prentis, b. c. 1902, MS. 1920 at home. 1930 not home.
  2. Bernice Prentis, b. c. 1903, MS. 1920 and 1930 at home.
  3. Mary Catherine Prentis, b. c. 1905, MS. 1920 and 1930 at home.
  4. Tyra J. Prentis, (son) b. c. 1908, MS. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  5. Ray Prentice, b. c. 1915, MS. 1920 and 1930 at home.

2. Tyra J. Prentis, (son) b. c. 1908, MS. 1920 at home. He appears in the 1930 censusas "T. Prentiss" in Leakesville, Greene Co., MS, living with the family of his wife.

He m. Opal McInnis, b. c.1908, MS, dau. of D. M. and Emma McInnis. No children shown.
