We are helping Shirley Shewmake Manning in tracing her husband's Prentice family tree. Here is what we have so far:

1. Mary Ellen Prentice. Shirley Manning indicated that Mary Ellen was b. Jan 1855 in Alabama (but see discussion, below under "Who are Mary Ellen Prentice's Parents"). Mary Ellen d. c. 1893 in New Salem, Texas.

She m. William Marion Sanders c. 1875 as his 2nd wife. William was b. 12 Oct 1841 in Murfreesboro, Pike County, Arkansas. He died 8 Feb 1937 in the Alf Community, Montgomery County, Arkansas. William was the son of John T. Sanders and Celia Orrick (dau. of William Orrick Jr. and Celia Strickland). Children (per Shirley Manning, email, 27 Jul 2002):

William Sanders also had a son by a prior marriage to an unidentified woman:

1. James Franklin Sanders, b. 16 Dec 1867 in Denton, Denton Co. Texas. He d. 24 Sep 1942 Big Fork, Polk County, Arkansas. James was bur. 25 Sep 1942 in Sulphur Springs Cemetary, Montgomery Co, AR. He is believed to have married, but the name of his wife is not known.

2. Janie Sanders, b. 11 Mar 1875 in TX and d. 24 May 1950 in Hico, LA at the age of 75. She m. 1st George Hiram Manning on 4 Jul 1900. He was the son of Jessie Bryan Manning (b. 22 Nov 1847 and d. 1906) and Eliza Ann Jane Collins (Jul 1852 and d. 9 Sep 1927) and was b. May 1881 in Athens, Henderson Co, TX. George d. 12 Oct 1906 in New Salem, Rusk Co., TX at the age of only 25. Children:

He m. 1st Lulee Shults in Hatfield, Polk Co, AR. She was b. 21 Feb 1901, d. 29 Dec 1919 at the young age of only 18, and is bur. in Six Mile Cemetery, Polk County, AR. George m. 2nd Artie Putman. Jessie Irene Hughes, dau. of Joe Silas HUGHES (14 Oct 1882-25 Jun 1965) & Eliza Eveline Edwards (28 Aug 1889-20 Dec 1985), in Sulphur Springs, Montgomery Co, AR. Jessie was b. 27 Jan 1906 in Sulphur Springs, Montgomery Co, AR, d. 9 Dec 1988 in Ruston, LA at the age of 82, and is bur. in Harmony Chapel Cemetery, Hico, LA. Children:

Although Shirley Manning's information is that Mary Ellen was b. Jan 1855 in Alabama, there seems to be a good chance that Mary Ellen may be the Mary E. Prentice, b. c. 1853 in TN, daughter of John and Rachel Prentice, and shown in the 1860 Denton Co., TX census.

William was living in Denton County in 1867 when his son, James, was born (above) and that is probably where William m. Mary Ellen Prentice. A copy of Mary Ellen's marriage record would probably cofirm the identify of her parents.

Interestingly, Mary E. Prentice had a sister named Sabrina, and Mary Ellen gave that same, rather unusual, name of Sabrina, to one of her daughters.
