Henry Prentice of Spalding, Lincoln, England

Henry Prentice of Spalding, Lincoln, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2001 and Revised 9 Sep 2006

Update of 9 Sep 2006: This article has now been replaced by our later, Winter 2006, article entitled Henry Prentice of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England .
Update of 27 Sep 2001: In our issue of Winter 2001, we have an article about the Prentices of Thetford and East Wretham which refers to a Henry Prentice, b. 23 July 1797 at a location near Weeting. There is a chance that the 1797 Henry Prentice is the same Henry Prentice who is the subject of this article. Weeting is only about a mile north of Brandon and perhaps 5 miles NW of Thetford, the locations covered in the Winter 2001 article. Additional investigation on this point is needed.

1. Henry Prentice was likely b. c. 1805-15 and may have d. in the Ely area in 1850. He m. Frances. The IGI identifies a number of children. The first, Henry, names the mother as Frances Weets while the others name the mother only by the first name, Frances. Their known children, per IGI and information from Ian Prentice, were:

  1. (perhaps) Henry Benjamin Prentice, b. c May 1835, Weeting, Norfolk, England.
  2. Robert Frederick Prentice, chr. 24 Jan 1837, Spalding, Lincoln, England.
  3. Frances Mary Prentice, chr. 10 Nov 1839, Spalding.
  4. Richard Norman Prentice, chr. 8 Aug 1841, Spalding and d. 1879 in the Nottingham area. Richard had 1 or more children, including:
    1. Richard Norman Prentice, b. 1879, Nottingham and d. there Dec 1953. He m. Isabella who d. in Nottingham in Dec 1957.
  5. William Mall Prentice, chr. 27 Jul 1845, Spalding and d. in Hastings in 1888. He m. in 1881 in the Kensington area, but the name of his wife is not yet known.
  6. Rosana Elizabeth Prentice, chr. 15 Feb 1846, Spalding, and d. 4 months later in Spalding in Jun 1846.
  7. Mary Ann Prentice, chr. 17 Feb 1847, Spalding.
