1. Chauncey/Chancey) Prentiss, b. c. 1831-2 in OH and d. 12 Dec 1884 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH. He appears in the 1850 Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH census unmarried and 1880 Cleveland census with his wife and family. He may be the Chauncey Prentis who served in the Civil War - at age 33 ,enlisted C Co. 150th Inf Reg. OH; mustered out at Cleveland, OH on 23 August 1864.
He m. Emily Hanks, on 3 Oct 1866 in Cuyahoga Co., OH (per Marriage Index)." She was b. c. Dec 1840, Bloomfield, NJ, dau. of Oliver Perry Hanks (1814-1895) and Julia Minerva Ward (????-1843). An Ancestor Chart for Emily can be found at Ancestry.com .
A military pension was applied for by Chauncey's widow, Emily, on Aug. ?, 189? (application # 461132 certificate #295944). Emily appears in the 1900 Cleveland, OH census living with her daughter, Jennie, below. Children shown in the 1880 census are:
- Gertrude Prentiss, b. 11 Nov 1867, Cleveland, OH. She m. William B Phillips on 7 Jun 1893, Cleveland, OH. He was b. c. 1865.
- Jennie Prentiss, b. Oct 1870, OH. She is unmarried, living with her mother, Emily, in the 1900 census in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH.
He might be the son of Elijah B. Prentis, b. 6 Aug 1796 in Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY who appears in the 1850 census for Forest, Fond du Lac Co., WI. He had a son with the rather unusual name of Chauncy.
Since Chauncy Prentiss has a Cleveland connection, he just might be a sibling of Lewis B. Prentiss whose parents we have yet to identify
