» A Beautiful young girl has just sent us a basket of fruit, the very sight of which, she thinks, must make us smack our lips. We thank her, and would greatly prefer smacking hers.

By G.D. Prentice, Editor of the Louisville Journal, 1860.

• Please tell me if you know anything about Stephen Prentis the poet (1800-1862) who lived for the last 25 years of his life at Dinan, France, and brother Edward, painter (1797-1854) . They were the sons of Walter of Rochester, Kent, England, and both were baptised at the Earl Street Presbyterian church, Maidstone. I know the very brief entries in (British) Dictionary of National Biography, and the admirable article on Stephen by Mr P. Meazey in Le Pays de Dinan, vol. 15 (1995) , 305-21. Edward is said to have had 11 children! Besides biographical detail I am interested in locating copies of Stephen's rare pamphlets, and the originals of Edward's many - and once popular- paintings.

• I am the grandson of James Prentice, born about 1840 in Hadleigh Essex, married Charlotte Anderson of Canterbury, about 1865. He claimed Scottish connections, but I can find none. I understood that my maternal greatgrandparents were a Macpherson and a Macgregor, and that my father, also James Prentice, born 1884 at Camberwell, had some connection with Knockando (or Knockandhu) . Any information please?
