Isaac Prentice of Canada and Montpelier, VT

Isaac Prentice of Canada and Montpelier, Washington Co., VT
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2010 and Revised 14 Aug 2014

With the help of Larry Prentice, Ancestry.com and Vermont Births , together with Deb Arvidson's email of 3 Dec 2010, we have been tracing George Albert Prentice's roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Isaac Prentice may have been b. c. 1855-1860 and was b. in Canada according to the marriage record of his son, George. By 1882, when George was born, he was living in Montpelier, Washington Co., VT, again according to George's marriage record.

Isaac m. Emily Proctor who was b. in Plattsburgh, NY(?), according to their marriage record. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. George Albert Prentice, b. c. 10 Sep 1880, Montpelier, VT. . . . . . . . . . . . .[2]

2. George Albert Prentice. We find conflicting information about his place of birth:

  • One source says George was b. c. 1882 in Montpelier, VT, according to the birth record of his son, George, who was b. 1915. His marriage record also says he was b. in Montpelier, VT.
  • The death record of his daughter, Evelina/Evelyn, says he was b. in St. Albans, VT.
  • George's WW I registrtion card, dated 1918, says his birth date is 10 Sep 1880. He had brown eyes, black hair, and under possible reasons for disqualification it appears to say "one eye". For occupation he was "teaming" at Plant and Griffith in Bolton, VT. A google search brought up the Bolton Town plan which has a historical reference to the "Plant and Griffith Lumber Company in Jonesville". He lists his nearest relative as Henry Bush (father in law) in Bolton.
  • However, the 1920 census says George was b. c. 1881 in NY.

George d. c. 1953. His father was b. in NY and mother in Canada. In 1909 George was a laborer living in Colcester, Chittenden Co., VT. 1930 George and his family were living in Waterbury, Washington Co., VT. 1940 census in Leicester, Addison Co., VT, as a widower living with the family of his son, Robert.

Note: The original birth record for his son spelled the surname as "Prentes", but there was inserted a printed correction spelling the surname as "Prentiss."

He married Gertrude "Girtie" C. Bush on 18 Aug 1907 in Burlington, VT perhis marriage record. She was b. c. 1888 in Ellenburgh, NY, with both parents b. in NY. She was the dau. of Henry Bush of Bolton. The 1910 census gives his age as 39 instead of 29 which throws off the assumed birth date. They are in Colchester at the poor farm where he was a laborer. It's not clear if they are at the poor farm because he was helping run it, or if they were living there out of necessity.

George and Gertrude were living in Richmond, Chittenden Co., VT in 1920. Children:
