He m. Prudence Osgood. Children:

A. John Prentiss, b. 17 Dec 1760, Sterling, Worcester Co., MA, ad d. 21 Feb 1840, Langdon, Sullivan Co, NH, per Ancestry.com .

He m. Hannah Redington who was b. 1769, Lunenburg, Worcester Co., MA, and d. Langdon, Sullivan Co., NH, dau. of Benjamin Redington and Ruth Stearns. Children:

  1. Harry Prentiss, perhaps b. c. 1785-1795. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [1]

1. Harry Prentiss. His name comes from the death record of his son, Clark Prentiss. His date and place of birth is not yet known.. His birth date may have been 1785-1795 based on the 1816 birth of his son, Clark Prentiss. Ref: Brian Holland, email, 28 Feb 2011.

He m. Sarah Eldridge, again according to the death record of Clark Prentiss Sarah Elbridge might be the Sarah Elbridge b. 16 May 1789, Mansfield, Tolland Co., CT, but additional research is needed. Harry and Sarah had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Clark. O. Prentiss, b. c. 1816, Fairfax, Franklin Co., VT. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Amanda Prentiss, perhaps b. c. 1818-1820, perhaps Fairfax, Franklin Co., VT per Ancestry.com . She m. Jonathan W. Reynolds, b. 19 Aug 1815, Essex, Chittenden Co., VT, and d. 1l Dec 1882, Essex. An extensive Ancestor Chart for him can be found at Ancestry.com .

2. Clark O. Prentiss, b. c. 1816, Fairfax, Franklin Co., VT (his death record says b. in Alburgh, VT which lies about 22-3 miles south of the Canadian border. He d. 2 Jun 1897 in Essex Juction, Chitenden Co., VT at the age of about 81 per Tracy Arasim, Ancestry.com . Clark and his wife are bur. in the Eldridge Cemetery in South Burlington, VT.

Clark's middle name, with the initial "O" is unclear. It might be Otis or Obadiah. See Fn. 1 .

Clark Prentiss m. Ellen/Helen L. Vaughn on 10 Feb 1838 in Burlington, Chittenden Co., VT. Ellen was b. Oct 1820 in Franklin, VT, and d. 22 Nov 1900, VT. Clark and Ellen are buried at Eldridge Cemetery in Burlington, Chittenden, VT (per Brian Holland, email, 9 Aug 2001). She was the dau. of Clark Vaughn, b. 1790, and Betsey, b. 1792. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com .

Note: Tracy Arasim, above, says that Clark m.1st Leila Northcuttl, but she confuses Clark Prentiss with Clark Barnett who m. Leila Northcutt. See Ancestry.com: One World Tree which mistakenly says that Clark Barnett m. Ellen Vaughn on 10 Feb 1838 and that they had a number of children between 1841 and 1860, all surnamed Prentis or Prentiss.

That confusion of spouses is even clearer in Tracy Arasim's website where he lists a 3rd child of Clark Prentiss and Lelia Northcutt as b. 1854 even though Clark Prentiss m. Ellen Vaughn on 10 Feb 1838 and they had many children between 1841 and 1860.

By email of 11 Jan 2003, Brian Holland provided the following additional information: Clark Prentice served as a private in Company F of the 9th Vermont Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was discharged 13 May 1865 and received an invalid's pension for chronic rheumatism and chronic diarrhea. The pension file shows that Clark died on 2 Jun 1897 at Essex Junction, Chittenden County, Vermont.

The Widow's Application for Accrued Pension shows that Clark married Ellen Vaughn on 10 Feb 1838 at Burlington, Chittenden County, Vermont by the Rev. James Caughey.

It also appears that Clark's wife, Ellen, died before 22 Nov 1900; the pension files show that she was dropped from the rolls as of that date due to "reported death". The death date of 1920 was taken from a transcription of cemetery records and is likely incorrect. There is no claim to reinstate the pension after 22 Nov 1900 and I have no records indicating that Ellen was alive after 1900. Children:

Living with CIark's family was Emily Prentiss, b. c. 1814. It seems likely that Emily would be Clark's sister. Proximity suggests he may be related to two other men named Prentiss in Milton, Samuel and Isaac Prentiss.

Clark apparently died before 1900 as only his wife appears in the 1900 Williston, Chittenden Co., VT census and living with her daughter, Sarah (Prentiss) Nichols.

3.   Sarah Prentiss, b. Dec 1841, VT.

She m. Byron L. Nichols, aka Leroy Byron Nichols, on 24 Dec 1858 in Williston, Chittenden, VT (per Brian Holland, email, 6 Oct 2001). He was b. Dec 1833 in Williston, Chittenden Co., VT and d. before 11 Jan 1915 in Los Angeles, CA.

Byron/Leroy served in the Civil War. His service record lists his residence as Williston. He enlisted as a Corporal on 07 May 1861. He Enlisted in Company G, 2nd Infantry Regiment Vermont on 20 June 1861 He was promoted to Full Sergeant. He was Wounded on 12 May 1864 [the 2nd Vermont would have been at Spotsylvania Courthouse on that day]. He mustered out on 29 June 1864. (Source: Roster of Vermont Volunteers During the War of the Rebellion 1861-66. (VT Roster) Published in 1892 and available through ancestry.com.)

In 1900, Leroy and Sarah appear not only in the Williston census as, indicated above, they are also enumerated in the Essex Junction census as living in the house of their daughter, Minnie B. Nichols and her husband Josiah Giddings. Leroy and Sarah were living in VT as late as 1910 as they are enumerated in the Essex Junction census. Sarah filed for pension benefits from California on 11 Jan 1915. Sarah's granddaughter and great grandchildren moved to California between 1911 and 1914 and it is likely that Sarah went with them. According to the 1880 Census (Essex Junction) Leroy and Sarah had at least 3 children:

  1. Clayton G. Giddings, b. c. 1865, VT, and d. 1927 in Bakersfield, Kern Co., CA. He m. Emma M. Waters on 12 Sep 1888 in Grundy, IL. He was b. c. 1871 in IL. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.

4. William O. Prentiss, b. c. 1846, VT, and appears in the 1850 census at home in Burlington, Chittenden Co., VT. By eamil of 10 Feb 2008, Carl Edward Prentiss Jr. indicates he is the same person as Oscar William Prentiss, b. 29 Jan 1845.

He does not appear at home in the 1860 census when it was about 14, he is not shown at home as one would expect. The 1860 census does show an Oscar Prentis in Williston on the farm of C. W. and Martha Brownell. Clark Prentiss was also shown in the 1860 Williston census, so "Oscar" is tentatively identified as Clark's son.

He appears in the 1880 and 1900 census in Manchester, Hartford Co., VT, as Oscar W. Prentice with his wife and family.

William, or Oscar, m. 1st Mary Bessy on 3 Oct 1865. She was b. c. 1850, VT. Children per Carl Edward Prentiss Jr., above:

  3. Bessie D.Lee, b. c. 1877, VT, dau. of Thomas and Susan.

William/Oscar m. 2nd Frances, b. c. 1842, CT. She appears with William/Oscar in the 1920 census in Manchester, CT, his first wife, Mary, apparently having d. before 1920.

5. Charles H. Prentiss, b. c. 1852, VT. and d. after 1920 where he appears with his wife and family in the census in Bennington, Bennington Co. VT, census..

Note: There is a Charles Prentice, b. c. 1852, VT, son of Clark Prentice, but because of the 2 year difference in the year of birth, we tentative conclude that he is not the Charles who is the subject of this article.

He appears in the 1920 census in Bennington, VT, and called married, but his wife is not shown in the household. Shown are 3 children indicated as sons and daughters of the head of the household, Charles, but because of the age differential we have tentatively listed them as Howard's children:
    1. Harris Prentice, b. c. 1904, VT. 1920 at home in Bennington, VT.
    2. Hellen Prentice, b. c. 1910, VT. 1920 at home in Bennington, VT.

Who are Harry Prentiss' Parents?

Is Clark's father's name really Harry Prentiss?. Is his mother really Sarah Elbridge? Those names come from Clark's death record. They may, or may not, be correct. So far all of our search efforts do not produce a Harry Prentiss born in an appropriate time frame, and none married to a Sarah Elbridge.

Investigation is continuing.

Fn. 1: Clark Prentiss' middle name: Is he Clark Otis Prentiss?

Tracy Arasim purports to identify Clark Prentice as Clark Otis Prentiss and his father as Otis Prentiss, but without any additional details about him or supporting documents as to such relationship. We have been unable to contact Tracy Arasim because at first Tracy's website indicates Tracy does not wish to be contacted. More recently Tracy's spam blocker prevented any contact with him/her.

We do note that early census records do list the following men named Otis Prentis, Prentiss and Prentice:

  1. 1800 census in Milford, Otsego Co., NY: Otis Prentis. 1 male and 1 female, ages 26-45.
  2. 1810 census in Lunenburg, Essex Co,. VT: Otis Prentice. 1 male and 1 female, ages 26-45, and a dau. under 10 years. Lunenburg lies about 85 miles east of Fairfax where Clark Prentiss is said to have been b. c. 1816.
  3. 1820 census: None listed.
  4. 1830 census in Minehead, Essex Co., VT: Otis Prentiss. 1 male 40-50, a female 50-60, a son 10-15 (Clark Prentiss would have been about 14 in 1830), and a dau., 5-10.

Or is he Clark Obidiah Prentiss? By email of 11 Feb 2009, Carl Edward Prentiss Jr. indicates that Clark's full name might be Clark Obidiah (Obadiah?) Prentiss. We are in the preliminary stages of investigating that suggestion.

For now, we will simply identify him as "Clark Prentiss" as shown in the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1880 census. We do note that he is called "Clark Prentice" in Civil War Records .
