Lee Prentice of Canada and WI

Lee Prentice of Canada and Wisconsin
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2000 and Revised: 24 Jun 2008

Update of 24 Jun 2008: . Lee Prentice is #8 in our Spring 2001 article about Alexander Prentice of Carluke, Scotland . That article now replaces this article.

We are working with Linda Prentice in her efforts to identify her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Lee Prentice was b. Nov 1870 in "English Canada" with both parents b. in Scotland. He appears in the 1900 Ashland, Ashland Co., WI census as a Railway Conductor with his wife and family. The 1900 census indicates he emigrated to the United States in 1893 at the age of about 23

He m. Edith D., b. Jul 1873 in MI, with her father b. in England and mother in English Canada. Children:

  1. Sylvester L. Prentice, b. Nov 1895, WI. At home in 1900. Linda advises that he died about 1978 and probably in Indiana.
  2. John W. Prentice, b. Mar 1897, WI. At home in 1900.
  3. William Prentice, b. Aug 1899, WI. At home in 1900.

Who are Lee Prentice's Parents?

We note that the 1930 census in Barksdale, Bayfield, Wisconsin, shows a John Lee Printice, b. c 1870, Canada, with both parents b. in Scotland. We was a Cemetery worker. That date and origins is a close match to the above Lee Prentice.

John Leo Printice's wife is Deborah E., b. c. 1875, MI, with her father b. in England and mother in Canada. Her middle name might be "Edith." The birth date is close and the birth places of her parents match.

The 1900 census does not show any other Prentice families living in Ashland County or nearby Douglas, Bayfield and Iron Counties.

Ashland's proximity to Michigan, and Edith's birth there, suggests the possibility that Lee had earlier lived in Michigan, but he does not appear there in our extract from the 1880 MI census.

A notation on the 1900 census seems to indicate that Lee Prentice was naturalize in PA, but our extract from the 1880 PA census does not show him.

We also checked the IGI, but with negative results.
