By email of 18 Sep 2000, Ian Prentice has provided us with information about John Prentice of Stowmarket, England, and his descendants, which we have supplemented with census records:

1. John Prentice, called a widower in the records, was likely b. c. 1630-1650. We do not know where he was born, but perhaps it was in, or near, Stowmarket, Suffolk where he married his second wife. Stowmarket lies about 35 miles northeast of Chelmsford where Valentine Prentice was living in 1626, and lies about 10 miles northwest of Ipswich.

We do not yet know the name of his first wife. John m., as his 2nd wife, Sarah Baldery, also a widow, in 1671 in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Their children were:

• Robert Prentice, b. 14 Mar 1673. May be deceased by 1684 since later son also was named Robert.
• Sarah Prentice, b. 24 May 1675. May be deceased by 1696 since later daughter also named Sarah.

  • Alice Prentice, b. 15 Nov 1759; m. William Pemberton on 5 Jan 1778.
  • Esther Prentice, b. 1722 and d. 7 Nov 1802. She m. Abraham Manning on 11 Nov 1760. He d. 7 April 1784.

3. Robert Prentice, b. 1714, probably at Stowmarket; probably d. 1752; m. Sarah Bird in 1734. Robert and Sarah's only child was:

4. Robert Prentice, b. 1734. He may have moved away from Stowmarket after 1760 having married Mary Welham in Barking in 1750. Barking lies about just below Needham Market which, in turn, is about 7 miles NNW of Ipswich. Robert and Mary had the following children:

1. Mary Prentice, b. 23 Dec 1750.
2. Sarah Prentice, b. 28 Feb 1753; m. John Spark 1777 in nearby Combs.
3. Rebekah Prentice, b. 2 May 1760. She had an illegitimate son:

5. Frederick Prentice, b. 6 Sept 1790, Stowmarket, Suffolk. He was a Labourer and died Dec 1867 in Woodbridge, Suffolk Co. , which lies about 7 miles ENE of Ipswich. He appears with his wife and children in the 1841 census in Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Frederick married 1st Susan Leeds on 25 Jan 1815 in Stowmarket. Children:

1. William Prentice, b. 10 Oct 1821 in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Not in 1851 or 1861 census.
2. Elizabeth Prentice, b. 10 Oct 1821 in Stowmarket, Suffolk.

After her death he married 2nd Angelina. She was b. c. 1807 in Stonham, Suffolk. Shewas living with the family of her son, Walter, in the 1861 census.

Frederick m. 3rd Ann Brown on 24 Dec 1830. She was b. c. 1811 in Suffolk. They appear in the 1841 census in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Their children were:

He m. Elizabeth Fuller on 26 Jan 1836 in Stowmarket and she d. in Woodbridge, Suffolk, in early 1859. Children (those from Ancestry.com are marked with an asterisk:

3. John Shadrack Prentice, b. 1842 in Woodbridge, Suffolk. At home in 1861 He d. in early 1910, a Brickmaker of Woodbridge. He m. Catherine Ann Doe in Milton on 19 Oct 1870. They appear in the 1901 census in Woodbridge with their son:

7. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1831, Stowmarket (per 1841 census). He was imprisoned in 1849 for trespassing in Hasketon and again in 1851 for trespassing in Bredfield. He appears in the 1861 census in Halesworth, Suffolk, with his wife and family. He d. about 1870-71 after the c. 1870 birth of his son, Charles, and before the 1871 census as his wife is called a Widow in the 1871 Halesworth census.

He m. Susannah "Susan" in September 1850 in Woodbridge, Suffolk. She was b. c. 1830, Hacheston, Suffolk. They appear in the 1851 census in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Children:

1. Kezia Prentice, b. Jun 1851 in Woodbridge. She may be the same person as Clara Prentice, b. c. 1851, Woodbridge, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1861 census. She may be the Clair Prentice shown as a single Asst. Nurse in Kensington, London, as b. c. 1851 in Woodbridge.
2. Charles Prentice, b. 1854; he d. in late 1862. He may be the same person as the "Engitena Prentice" indexed in the 1861 census as b. c. 1854, Woodbridge, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1861 census.
3. Susanna Prentice, b. c. 1856, Woodbridge, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1861 census.
4. Frederick Prentice, b. c. 1858, Woodbridge, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1861 and 1871 census. Not in 1881 and later census.
5. Nathaniel Prentice, b. c. 1860, Halesworth, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1871 and 1881. In 1881 and 1891 census an unmarried Lodger in Norwich St. Margaret, Norfolk. Not in 1901 census.

7. Arthur Prentice, b. c. 1866, Halesworth, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1871, 1881. A hospital inmate in the 1891 census in Halesworth. Unmarried Servant in 1901 Halesworth census.
8. Florence L. Prentice, b. c. 1867, Halesworth, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1871, 1881. A single lodger in the 1891 census in St. Marylebone, London. Living with her sister, Rose, in the 1901 St. Marylebone census.
9. Charles William Prentice, b. c. 1870, Halesworth, Suffolk. At home in Halesworth in 1871, 1881. Called William Prentice and living at home in the 1891 Halesworth census. Not in 1901 census.
10. Walter Prentice, b. 1855-6 in Boxford. He was a Farm Labourer in Raydon. He appears in the 1881 census in Raydon as a Farm Labourer. He appears in the 1891 census in Raydon with his wife, Alice, b. c. 1868 in Hadleigh, Suffolk; no children shown. They later appear in the 1901 census in Chattisham, Suffolk; no children shown.

8. Elijah Prentice, b. 16 Feb 1834, Stowmarket. Elijah was imprisoned in 1849 for trespassing in Hasketon. He was a Brickmaker of 6, Brick Kiln Cottages in Woodbridge in 1881 and died in Ipswich in 1883.

He m. Emma Sparkes in Woodbridge on 27 July 1851 but they appear to have separated. Emma was b. 1835 in Woodbridge, and d. Dec 1884 in Ipswich, Suffolk. She was the dau. of Robert Sparkes and Margaret Cooper. Elijah then lived with or possibly married Hannah Kemp who was born in Halesworth in 1844. Children:

1. Sarah A. Prentice, b. 16 Feb 1852 in Woodbridge and d. early 1853
2. Angelina Prentice, b. early 1853; m. late 1870 in Woodbridge
3. Cornelius Prentice, b. 2 Jan 1854 in Nacton, he d. shortly afterwards
4. Elijah Kemp Prentice, b. 1867. He was a Brickmaker of 16, Bristol Road, Woodbridge and d. 7 Nov 1955. He m. Emma in June 1896 in Ipswich. she was b. c.1857 in Nacton, Suffolk. They appear in the 1891 and 1901 census in St. Margaret, Suffolk without children. He had a daughter:
   1. (possibly) Winifred Annie Prentice, b. after 1901, whose daughter Angela Josephine West was living with Elijah in 1955. She appears to have lived in Bristol afterwards.

5. Frederick Prentice, b. 1869. Not in 1871 and later census.
6. Sarah Ann Prentice, b. 1871. She m. John E. R. Prentice on 3 Dec 1890 in Great Ilford, Essex. She d. 1919 in Vancouver. For John's ancestry, see Prentices of Palgrave, England

9. Charles Kemp Prentice, b. 12 Sept 1873 in Woodbridge, Suffolk Co. , which lies about 7 miles ENE of Ipswich. He d. early in 1957 in Ipswich . Charles m. (unknown) in Sept 1899 in Stowmarket. Charles Kemp's children :

1. Gladys Louisa Prentice, b. Ipswich 1900
2. Harry Victor Prentice, b. 1901 but sems to have died the same year.
