Earl M. Prentice of WI and Fairmont, Martin Co., MN
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2000 and Revised 5 May 2004

Update of 5 Aug 2001: This article is replaced by our later Fall 2001 article on Charles M. Prentice of Martin Co., MN

We are helping Jennifer (Prentice) Rossow in tracing the ancestry of her great-great-grandfather, Earl M. Prentice, b. Feb 1879 in WI and d. 1960, probably in Fairmont. He first appears in the 1900 census in Fairmont, Martin Co., MN as Earl M. Prentiss, age 21, an unmarried boarder in the home of Amanda Hayworth. He later appears in the 1920 Fairmont census with his wife and children.

He married Helen Ann sometime beween 1900 and 1904, probably in MN. She was b. c. 1883 in IL and d. 1954. Their children are:

  • Caroline Prentice,b. c. 1904, MN.
  • Raymond Cecil Prentice, b. 1906 and d. 1947.  He m. Helen Woole, dau. of Carl Woole.  His childen include:
    • Harold Lee Prentice, b. 1927 who lives in MN and served in the military.  He m. MaryLou Gertrude Heibnecke (1930-1996).  Children:
      • LeeWayne Scott Prentice.
      • Terry Allen Prentice.  He has a daughter:
        • Jennifer Prentice.  She m. Mr. Rossow.
      • Stacy Prentice
      • Jeffrey Prentice.
    •  Fern Prentice
  • Fern Prentice, b. c. 1914, MN
Who are Earl Prentice's Parents?

Parents of unmarried young men and women frequently live in the same town or county as their parents. For that reason it is sometimes helpful to see if there are other Prentice families in that town or county.

The only other Prentice family shown in the 1900 Martin County census happen to also live in Fairmont:

  • Annie M. Prentiss, B. Aug 1862, NY.
  • Lee Prentiss, b. Sep 1886, WI.
The differing spellings of the surname as "Prentiss" is not necessarily significant because census records often use different surname spellings. However, it is interesting that the 1920 census spell the surnames of both Earl and Annie as "Prentiss."

Although only conjecture at this point, it may be that Annie is Earl's mother and that Lee is Earl's brother. The absence of a father in the 1900 census may indicate that he was then deceased
