By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2000 and Revised 20 Oct 2009

Update of 20 Oct 2009: James Prentice is #16 in our Fall 2008 article entitled Thomas Prentice of Lesmahagow, Scotland . That later article now replaces this article.

1. James Prentice was b. c. 1801 (1861 census says b. c 1796) in Lanarkshire Scotland. He appears in the 1841 census without his wife.

He m., as his 2nd wife, who was b. 17 Jul 1797. Children of James and Isabella in the 1841 census:

  1. Adam Prentice, b. c. 1825-6, Lanarkshire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

  2. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1827, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 in Carnwath. In 1851 census he is living with the family of his brother, Adam. He appears in the 1827 census in Straiton, Ayrshire, with his wife, Janet, b. c. 1833, Ayrshire; no children shown.

  3. George Prentice, b. c. 1835, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 and 1851 in Carnwath. He might be the person indexed in the 1861 Carnwath census as George Rentier, b. c. 1835, Carnwath, with his wife, Agnes, b. c. 1838, Dunure, Lanarkshire, and son:
    1. James Prentice, b. c. 1860, Carnwath. At home in 1861 in Carnwath.

  4. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1836, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 and 1851 in Carnwath.
  5. Marrion/Marion Prentice, b. c. 1832, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841, 1851 and 1861 in Carnwath.
  6. Simel Prentice, b. c. 1828, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 in Carnwath.
  7. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1830-31, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 in Carnwath. . . . . . . . . . [3]

James appears in the 1851 and 1861 Carnwath census with his (2nd?) wife, Janet, b. c. 1808, Carnwath, and children:

  1. Janet Prentice, b. c. 1845, Carnwath. At home in 1851 and 1861in Carnwath.
  2. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1849, Carnwath. At home in 1851 and 1861 in Carnwath.
  3. William Prentice, b. c. 1849, Carnwath. At home in 1851 and 1861 in Carnwath.

2. Adam Prentice, b. c. 1825-6, Carnwath, Lanarkshire. At home in 1841 in Carnwath. He appears in the 1851 Dalmellington, Ayrshire, census as a "Coal Mining Overseer" with his wife and family and siblings: Alexander and Thomas. He may have d. after 1852 and before 1861 as he does not appear in the 1861 household in which his wife appears. On the other hand, in the 1881 census in Dalmellington, an Adam Prentice, "Provision Merchant," is shown as the husband of Catherine, below, whose age is transcribed as age 37 when Adam would have been about 55--57; it is unclear whether that Adam is the same person with the age age 37 being merely a transcription error since the microfilm is not shown for viewing.

He m. Catherine Murdoch, b. c. 1828, Dalmellington. She appears with her husband and infant son in the 1851 census. She appears without her husband in the 1861 census lin Dalmellington, Ayrshire, iving in the household of her parents, James and Barbara Murdoch. In the 1871 census she is living at 2 Carpet Closs, Dalmellington, occupation as a Grocer, with her son and a nephew, Arthur Smith (b. c. 167), in Dalmellington.

In the 1881 census in Dalmellington, an Adam Prentice, age 37, "Provision Merchant," is shown Catherine's husband of Catherine, below. Her 1st(?) husband, Adam, would have been about 55--57 so it is unclear whether that Adam is the same person with the age age 37 being merely a transcription error since the microfilm is not shown for viewing.

In the 1891 census in Dalmellington, Catherine is a "Grocer" living at 2 Carpet Close, without a husband, but with a niece, Margaret M. Smith, b. c. 1874, New Cumnock, Ayrshire. She does not appear in the 1901 census.

Children of Adam and Catherine per 1851, 1861 and 1871 census:

  1. James Prentice, b. 1851, Dalmellington, Ayrshire. At home in 1851 census. In 1861 Dalmellington, Ayrshire, census living with his mother and her parents. 1871 census living with his mother and a cousin. Not in 1881 and later census.

  2. Barbara Prentice, b. c. 1853, Mauchline, Ayrshire. At home in 1861 in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, census living with her mother and her parents. Not home in 1871 or 1881.

3. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1830-1, Carnwath. In 1851 census he is living with the family of his brother, Adam. Thomas appears in the 1861 Census information of Cambusnethan, Lanark Scotland living at 5 Steel St., Wishaw with his wife and family.

  1. Catherine Prentice, , b. 28 Nov 1854, Carnwath, Lanark. At home in 1861 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. It is unclear whether she is the Catherrine Muir shown in the 1881 census in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1854, Carnwath, witfe of Robert Muir, b. c. 1853, Carluke, with their children:
    1. Susan Muir, b. c. 1876, Carluke. At h ome in 1881.
    2. William Muir, b. c. 1878, Carluke. At home in 1881.

  2. Jean Smith Prentice, b. 6 Sep 1856, Carnwath, Lanark. Might have d. young.

  3. Jane Smith Prentice, b. 28 Jun 1858, Old Monkland, Lanark. Might have d. young.

  4. Helen Frame Prentice, b. 14 Jul 1860, Cambusnethan, Lanark. She may be the Ellen Prentice appearing in the 1881 census living at 9 High St., Rutherglen, Lanark. She was then 20 and called a Grocers Assistant.

  5. James Prentice, b. 17 Aug 1864, Cambusnethan, Lanark (per IGI). Not in 1871 census with that birth date. It is unclear whether he is the James Prentice shown in the 1881 census in Dalziel, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1862, Cambusnethan, nephew of Mrs. James Miller, b. c. 1832, Carstairs. It is also unclear whether he is the James Prentice, Bottler's Clerk, shown in the 1891 census in Glasgow St. John, , Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1862, Overton, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, with his wife, Marian, b. c. 1862, Dalziel; no children are shown. That James and Marian later appear in the 1901 census in Glasgow Camlachie, Lanarkshire, with their children:
    1. James M. P. Prentice, b. c. 1892, Glasgow. At home in 1901.
    2. John B. Prentice, b. c. 1895, Glasgow. At home in 1901.

  6. Gavin Cooper Prentice, b. 22 Oct 1866, Cambusnethan, Lanark (per IGI). He is probably the Gavin Prentice appearing in the 1881 census living at 9 High St., Rutherglen, Lanark. He was then age 14 and called an Apprentice Boatfitter. In 1891 census as a single Boarder and "Gardener Domestic" living in Rosebank Hall, Dalserf, Lanarkshire. Not in 1901 census.

  7. Elizabeth Stewart Prentice, b. 3 May 1871, Cambusnethan, Lanark (per IGI). Not in 1881 census.
