Bradley Prentiss of Chesterfield, NH

Bradley Prentiss of Chesterfield, Cheshire Co., NH
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2008 and Revised 27 Sep 2008

Update of 27 Sep 2008: Bradley Prentiss is #29.11(ii) in our Henry Prentice eBook.

The 1850 & 1860 Chesterfield, Cheshire Co., NH census identifies the following family:
  • Bradley Prentiss, farmer, b. c. 1811, NH
  • Mrs. B. Prentiss, b. c. 1807-09, NH
  • Mary Prentiss, b. c. 1833
  • George Prentiss, b. c. 1835
  • Phila Prentiss, b. c. 1838
  • Persis Prentiss, b. c. 1844 >li> Jane Prentiss, b. c. 1845 (may be same person as Persis, above)
  • Martha Prentiss, b. c. 1849

Also living in that same household is Joseph Prentiss and his wife. Joseph, age 75 and born c. 1775 is probably his father. Living with Bradley in the 1860 census is Persis Prentice, b. c. 1883, NH, probably is mother.

Joseph Prentiss, b. c. 1775, is probably the same person shown in the NH IGI as Joseph Prentiss, b. 2 Sep 1774 in Hinsdale, Cheshire Co., NH, son of Joseph Prentice and Sarah. We have not identified their parents.

Bradley Prentiss might also be related to Snow Prentiss of westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH.

It is possible that Joseph Prentiss might be a Hogg. As related in our new PRENTICE book, there were 6 or 7 Hogg brothers living in NH, 4 of whom whose name was changed from Hogg to Prentiss (see pg. 491 and following). Only 2 of those 4 are known:

  • James (Hogg) Prentiss, 491/1.
  • Samuel (Hogg) Prentiss, 494/2
The names of the 2 other Hoggs who changed their names to Prentiss are not presently known, and not all the descendants of James and Samuel are presently known.
